Can someone teach me about Hep-Locks?
I work in a Canadian hospital. Heparin Lock and Saline Lock are two different procedures. We usually use Saline lock if we want to cap off a PIV, or any kind of vascular access devices (VAD). Meaning we flush the VAD with 3-10 cc of saline and lock it (slide the locking device of VAD to "lock" so blood wont back out of the inner cannula and cause it to clot) Heparin lock on the other hand means flushing the VAD with 3-5cc of heparin (100units/mL) to prevent clot formation also and prevent blood from blocking the VAD. We use heparin lock for all VAD except regular PIV's as the cannula is much shorter and saline flushes would do (in case it clots, its easy to insert a new PIV.. PICC insertion on the other hand are not what RN's can do alone.) Procedure: Saline lock - flush line with saline 3-10 cc then lock the device while using positive pressure when flushing (push pause push pause then slide lock all at the same time). PIV-flush once a shift. Heparin Lock - flush line with saline 3-10 cc THEN flush with 100 units/mL of Heparin 3-5 cc and lock the device using positive pressure (unless you have a maxplus valve, no positive pressure needed). Jugline/PICC- heparin lock every 7 days and/or after every access) We use 3cc for PICC's and Jug line. While 5 cc for implanted portacath's. Please make sure patient is not HITT + and note the concentration of Heparin.

camo scrubs.. opinion
i work at a toronto hospital.. i wore a top camo scrub.. my manager does not seem to mind. I find it that I only wear the either top camo or bottom camo... but not both.. looks intimidating.. especially if im in the medicine unit.. lots of confused pts... i only got one problem though.. patients cant seem to find me when they need me.. *edit i dont have a bottom camo scrub yet but I match my top camo scrub with my olive green scrub pants.. If i get one camo pants I'll probably match it with my olive green top.

protecting yourself against complaints
so if I am going to do any nursing task that involves touching the patients private area, e.g. applying cream or giving IM's etc, how would I get a colleague to witness it? Does the colleague stand just outside the curtain while you are doing your nursing task or does he/she go together with you and stare at what you are doing to your patient?

Funny dreams about your job as a nurse
I am a new grad nurse and working for about 3 months now... One of the recurring dreams I had happened twice already while I was sleeping the first one happened during my practicum while the second happened just yesterday.. in both dreams I was in the same situation responding to a code blue.. in my dream, I went to my pt room, do nursing stuff with them, then they just spontaneously coded on me somehow... called a code blue, shouted for help and I just jumped right on top of my patient doing chest compressions... at this time, subconsciously , I could feel my own heart thumping and going tachy because of the adrenaline during the code. While lying on bed my shoulder would just start twitching while in my dream I was imagining doing compressions... after a few twitches, i would just wake up in the middle of the night sweating...

What would you do if you had a Clean Utility Supply Room at home?
Share some crazy or actual ideas you would use supplies and equipment found in the clean utility supply room... IV gravity lines = used to water your plants indoor if you are always busy at work and have no time to take care of your plants... replace NS bag with water and set the rate to 1ml/hr? hehe... Sterile cloth covers used to wrap sterile trays = use them as a mat on your car during muddy or rainy days.. 100 CC syringes = used for baking. e.g. filling up cream puffs ? foley /condom cath = Road tripping without pee breaks... ^_^ *disclaimer : taking supplies to home from your facility is considered stealing*

camo scrubs.. opinion
just wondering what does everyone think of a nurse wearing a camo patterned scrub... either top or pants.. i dont plan on having both together coz that would make me stand out too much... lol.. does it look unprofessional or intimidating to our patients? Im a male nurse and starting work this week.. i only have 2 sets of plain ol mono-colored scrubs so far.. i wana look more manly thats why im planning to get a camo colored pattern.. women are so lucky having several choices of scrub color and pattern to choose from...

crne materials
if you did not have your nursing education in canada, then maybe the CRNE prep course is for you.. It is very different from NCLEX as they are mostly psychosocial questions... I dont have the extra dough to take that course... so im skipping it. i just bought the prep books. I bought a mosby crne prep guide and borrowd CRNE from our school library.. to suzzane: i highly doubt the post office in manila... too many times i heard my friends lose their stuff because of post office workers stealing things that was sent to manila.. even if u go to amazon.com or shop online, you better pray that it comes to you.... or say goodbye to 10k pesos...
