One night in the icu, I needed help to turn a patient who was on a vent, and sedated with a versed drip. I had asked a nurse to come into the room, and she followed. We went to both sides of the patient and proceeded to grab the lift sheet when she said........"Wait just a minute, I have to FART!". She then proceeded to back up from the bed, turn around, lift up a leg, and farted as loud as can be. She then returned to the bed grinning to herself and helped me lift the patient.
I couldn't wait to get out of the room. I about died laughing inside. I couldn't wait to "put on a play" for the nurses in the nurses break room and replay that moment for them. They were laughing so hard. We still laugh to this day!
Anyone have any others to share????? :chuckle
I'm glad this didn't happen to me, but a nurse where I worked told me about her first day at the hospital. She was very nervous, but felt she had handled herself very well so far. During the lunch break she went to the bathroom which was in the hall near the nurse's station. After, she left and walked down the hall to check on her patients , she got half-way down the hall and saw a long line of TP going all the way back to the bathroom (The end of the TP roll had caught in her uniform).:rotfl:
A couple of months ago I was making a patient visit at a facility. I had walked up to the front of the unit to speak to the nurse. All of the residents were gathering at the entrance to go to the dining room. As I stood at the med cart speaking with the nurse I did not notice on of the residents had scooted right up behind me in his wheelchair. I took a step backward to turn and walk away, lost my balance and ended right in this guys lap. Everyone was just cracking up. This little old fellar right along with them. I then extracted my self, in the process I knock his prosethetic leg loose and hastily made my departure.
I was working 3-11, one other RN, on med surg. We were standing at the desk and my patients family came out to say that they didn't think Dad was breathing. The other nurse and I sent the visitors out and pulled the curtains. I stood on one side, she on the other. I was using my stethoscope listening for lung sounds and I assumed she was planning to feel for a carotid pulse. All of a sudden, she turned his head towards me ( I was bending over, inches from his face) and pulled down on his chin. In her best ventriloquist voice, she said, "hello". Unfortunately, it was my patient and I had to try to tell the loved ones that Dad had indeed ceased to breathe without losing my composure. When I got to the charting room I laughed till I PIMP!
This was supposed to be funny? Sorry, I missed the hilarity there.

O come on Cara, everyone knows dead patients are really the funniest.
When I was going through RN school, I worked as an LPN in a long term care facility. One orientation night I was passing 5 pm meds with my preceptor, which included giving protein shakes out of drink-box type containers to residents who had it ordered to supplement their diets. The boxes needed to be shook well before pouring, so I picked up one on the med cart and proceeded to shake it. Unfortunately, I hadn't checked to see if it was already opened and got protein shake all over my face, hair and uniform. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think as nurses we have a morbid sense of humor that helps us deal with stressful situations. It makes horrible situations easier to cope with.
So true........It is difficult for others to understand sometimes, but all I can say is it must be a coping mechanism..... :imbar I have been laughing for 5 minutes after reading the post by gr8rnpjt
This happened to a nursing friend years ago in a LTC facility. She and another RN were each feeding a resident. My friend noticed that the resident the other RN was feeding had his mouth wide open and the food was runnining out of his mouth. The other RN then said to my friend "I just don't understand why Mr. C. isn't eating." My friend said that she took a really hard look at this resident ... the man was dead. Very calmly, my friend asked the other RN if she thought this resident was any longer with us. The other RN looked at the resident again and exlaimed "omygosh, omygosh!!".
I know this probably doesn't count cuz it was a nursing student but it's a good one. She was doing a burn dressing and the patient went asytole so she hit the code button. With 20 people in the room including doctors who came running from all over the hospital it was determined that she cut the lead wires when she was removing the dressing.
