FSCJ Summer 2014 Hopefuls

Published

Hello, everyone!

Since I have not seen one started on this site, I thought I would go ahead and get the ball rolling. This thread is for anyone hoping to get into FSCJ's Nursing Program for the term starting in the Summer of 2014.

Hi everyone,

I plan to take my re-take the Nat in two weeks. I have a question to anyone who has taken the test recently. Do you have any suggestions or study tips for the Synonym/Antonym/Analogy part of the test. My biggest problem I faced the first time was not knowing most of the words, so how can I choose a word that is different or means the same when I have no clue what any of them mean. Do you mind sharing how you prepared for them. Some of you have really high scores, so any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello Aye_Ne, what helped me the most was reading, reading, reading, reading, and more reading. You have to make reading part of your daily routine. Try to read material that uses complex words, phrasing, and content, such as science articles and journals. Try reading current events of medical companies, such as Mayo Clinic, National Institute of Health, or WebMD. I understand that you may want a "crash course" of tips to help you prepare; however, in my honest opinion, I think it would be best to take things little by little. By continually reading and understanding material, your mind begins to recognize patterns in spellings of wording for words --- even for words you've never seen! There were many words that I did not recognize; however, I was able to use my reading experience to critically think my way into choosing the correct answer. Sorry for this long response lol - I just want to help :)

Thanks Lori and Kate! :D

Lori- I am pretty sure that should get you a seat on N/W, My points are really high, I don't think that will be the average or anything.

Manny92- I am planning to do the RN-BSN bridge at UNF, I am hoping to have a nursing job in acute care and then you can do it all online. If you are planning to get your BSN before you work, have you looked into UNF's pre licensure BSN program? It is only 5 semesters long assuming you have your A.A. I would probably do that if I didn't need nights/weekends.

Ecopeta- I am pretty sure it just means you have to be registered at FSCJ, when you apply they will accept you as a student, meaning you can register for classes. Also, you have to make sure you have your transcript sent to the registrars office for them to approve, because you can only turn in an FSCJ transcript to the nursing office.

AmandaWachter, I considered the prelicensure BSN program at UNF but have decided to make FSCJ my priority. The main reason is that I want to save time and money lol - if I start in the Summer, I will have some time to work as a CNA and volunteer at a hospital to get experience and then do RN-BSN program to show potential employers that I am trying to build a strong solid foundation, all while saving some money.

Thanks Manny92, great advice. Your response was actually what I was looking for. Not really interested in a quick fix, I've been preparing for this test for months so I like to take my time and retain what I am learning. I didn't do too well in science and math my first time but I feel really confident now. I was just worried about this area but I will definitely take your advice. Thank you for responding and congrats on your score.

Turned in application. Now we wait!!

Turned in application. Now we wait!!

I start tomorrow. We got our packages about 2 weeks after the application deadline. Hopefully yours will be sent just as fast. What a great Valentines!!

Good Luck :)

Oh I hope it only takes about two weeks to get our letters!! I've turned mine in right before Christmas and it's already killing me! I don't know how long after the deadline I can wait!!

Aye_Ne- I wish I had some good advice to give you, but I'm not really sure. The only thing I studied was math brushing up on multiplying and dividing without a calculator because I knew everything would be so broad. I do think that reading will help with those types of questions. Many of those questions I didn't really know the words, but I had a general sense of what they meant even if I couldn't define them. Also if I knew just two of the words it helps to narrow it down a lot. Go with your instinct and don't spend too much time on it, if you have time to go back then awesome. Good luck! Take deep breaths, and try not to get nervous.

Seriously tell me about it!!!! I haven't turned in my app yet, but I am obsessive-compulsive about this kind of thing so I know I'm gonna be constantly checking the mail.

Thanks for responding AmandaWachter, even though I took this test before, this will be my first time applying. I didn't do horrible my first time, but I could sure use a boost in my scores. I didn't prepare the first time, so I am really excited to see how I do. I'm excited knowing I could actually be going to Nursing school but nervous that I won't score high enough. The life of a Nursing school hopeful, sigh. I've been doing alot of synonym and antonym practice so hopefully it pays off when I take my test on the 27th. Thanks again!

I feel like questions get answered faster and more accurately on this thread rather than calling the school, lol. I am scheduled to take the NAT on the 24th of Jan. I'm done with my pre req's and signed up for spring to take HUM to finish my AA. I took the 2 month course online to finish in march-april so I can also apply to UNF, JU etc. What's the easiest way to pick up an application packet? Just go to the North Campus nursing office and ask for one? And lastly. I took PSY at St. Johns last year and I will need that to be transferred to FSCJ. Can I get the transcript online or do I have to go to St. Johns River Campus to get the transcript? Thanks for all the help. February 1st is coming up quickly!!

You can email Cheryl James and she can email you the application or send me your email address and I can forward the application she gave me. Also if you have any questions you can always email her, she is super helpful!

As far as I know, you can only submit a FSCJ transcript. One of the emails she sent me says " If coming from another school, all transcripts must be evaluated by FCSJ Records Office before applying". So I'm sure they will add it to your FSCJ transcript for you to submit.

Hope that helps! =]
