frustrated with the job search

Published

Im a new grad that graduated in may and have been actively looking for a job since August when I passed my boards and still have to land my first job. Im getting really discouraged with the process. Ive been on several interviews for hospitals and nsg homes but no job offer! What do I need to be doing different and what does these employers want???? Ive done everything possible!!

I'm in the same boat, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong either. I haven't had any calls from hospitals at all, had a couple of interviews for part time jobs but haven't had any offers...getting very frustrated! Going to a LTC facility tomorrow that stated in the ad that they hire new grads, hope I have luck there!

Mostly it's that there are too many nurses looking for work.Dozens of applicants for just one posting.

Why does nursing jobs have to be so competitive?

Because there are way more nurses than jobs.

I think one of the most frustrating things about the job search and it not going well is that it's unexpected...I really did not think it was going to be such a challenge. Here a lot has to do with your last semester and how the practicum went. Mine went ok but it was not a floor I wanted to work on. Fellow students that have gotten jobs have either known someone or called their preceptor and they talked to the nurse manager for them, that has been the only way to get an interview for the hospitals in NE Ohio.

Part of the trouble is that everyone going into nursing bought the sales bit. "Be a nurse! Always have a job! Take your pick of any job you want! get into the specialty you want right out of school!"

If you are getting interviews, then you obviously look good on paper but aren't delivering what they want in the interview. There is some great advice on this website on brushing up interviewing skills. That is where you should start. Your resume must look good if you are getting the calls, so now you just need to see what you can do to improve your odds of closing the deal.

I am in the exact same boat as well. But I haven't gotten interviews :( I am in NE Ohio too... Just keep applying everywhere you can!!

I'm in the exact same boat in NYC. What I find really frustrating is how no one will even meet you anymore, they just direct you to a website to fill out an application. Everyone either wants a BSN or one years experience. I've turned to agencies and they promise you the world and still don't deliver or want to give me home care assignments of vent/trach patients when I have no experience outside of clinical with these types of cases. However, I can take a mandatory vent/trach care course through them for a fee of $125. Really?!?!
