I need a change--help!
Hello! I am looking for a different type of job and I was hoping to find some advice/ideas here. Currently, I am working in a hospital on a telemetry/cardiac floor. My coworkers aren't very nice to me and it is one big clique. They go to my boss and tell her things about me. For example, the other day, my patient had a fever and going into shock and I was on the phone with the Doctor several times, trying to get the patient to the ICU. Well, a bunch of them told my boss that I was sitting on my butt doing nothing while they all had to help take care of my patient. I was on the phone with the Doctor! I was doing as much as I could! And the second I was off the phone I was back in the patients room. I feel like there is no teamwork at my workplace and my night shift coworkers don't treat me like they should. They all just whisper amongst themselves when I'm around and I have heard from one of the stna's that they always talk about me behind my back. I feel like I am being bullied! So, I went to my boss and told her all of this. She says that 'several' of my coworkers are frustrated with me that they have to help me or that I ask too many questions. I ended up crying and getting emotional in from of her ughh:( but I'm very hurt that the coworkers don't come talk to me personally about any concerns but just go directly to my boss about it. And I don't agree with what I am hearing. I put 110% into everything I do, and it is about helping the patients. This was over a week ago and nothing has changed. However, I am switching weekends in February-so that I can work with some different people. Instead of the ones that I don't fit in with. Sorry for the rant. I'm just mad about it and am upset. So, I am looking for a new job. And I am hoping for a new change with the new year. But I need some suggestions. I don't want to work in a hospital anymore right now. Preferably, I would like to work I. A doctors office or something with pediatrics and babies. I do NOT want to work with adults or the elderly. I feel like I have a calling to work with kids or babies. I am also up to working somewhere outpatient like a surgery center or something Really, I am having trouble with Indeed and other places. I feel that doctors offices only hire assistants, and that I would technically be overqualified for the job. I am an RN with a BSN and have 2 years of experience with adults/geriatrics. I am moving to Mentor, Ohio soon so that location is where I need to find something. Please help me in being able to make a switch. Any suggestions for jobs that I spoke about would be great. Thank you!!! telemetry unit.

First day off of training...nervous!
So I am going to be off of training starting tonight. I just found out cause I thought it was going to be the 8th. Anyways, I am super nervous! I am at a nursing home. I worked last night as well. It was a hard night, but I did learn a lot. I feel kind of stupid though cause I didn't recognize that the changes in vitals on a pt vomiting coffee ground emesis with a GI bleed was possibly becoming septic. We sent her to the ER. I feel like I can't remember anything I have learned in nursing school! This is my first job as an RN and I want to do a good job! Also, what would be the lowest BP for giving a BP med? I have heard 100 for systolic and 60 for diastolic. Any thoughts? How do I stay confident and be a good nurse? I studied like crazy throughout nursing school and for nclex! Any advice is very much appreciated! Thanks!!

First job...will it get better?
I started at my first RN job at a nursing home about 3 weeks ago. I'm on night shift 7p-7:30a. They are being really helpful and giving me an extended orientation time...they usually only give 5-6 days for nurses for training. I have had 8 days so far and at least 4 more still. But I feel so stupid there! I spend so much time passing meds cause there are about 30 residents and a lot of them need a BP taken or blood sugar/ insulin. So it ends up taking way longer than it should! Last night I was passing the HS ones till almost 2 in the morning. I was on a different unit though and their cart wasn't very organized. But I felt like I did horrible cause I struggled so much with it and then I didn't have time for charting stuff like behaviors/pain assessments. My trainer did it. There was also an admission that night and treatments to be done, which she took care of. also feel like I can't even remember simple things that I should know...like what to do in an emergency or something. I don't want to freeze when I'm on my own soon. I'm kind of freaking out at the moment!! Any advice for me?? I'd appreciate it! Thanks, Aviaa

New grad- what to do if patient dies
Hello! So I have recently (2 weeks ago) started my first RN job at a nursing home--night shift. It is going pretty well, better than I expected. Here is my concern. I am so worried about what to do if a resident dies. Like if I walk in the room and they aren't breathing, no pulse. I haven't been in a situation like that before and am worried I won't remember CPR or to check code status. If they are full code, what do i do since it's a nursing home? I just imagine this happening and me freezing and my mind going blank. know it will probably eventually happen that a resident will die on my shift, as it is a nursing home. I'm just soooo scared of it! I am still training and am not sure when I will be on my own. I don't want to appear stupid to my trainers, so I'm on here seeking advice. Please help!! Thank you!

New Grad
I feel like I wrote this, lol. Congrats!!! I just had my first interview this week at a LTC facility and was offered a nights 7p-7a full time. I took the job right away, but am now feeling kind of insecure about my decision. I am not sure about nights and my sleep schedule being messed up. But a job is nursing experience. I've been searching for 6+ months at hospitals with no luck, so i guess i will just have to try it out at this LTC facility until a hospital job offer comes along. I hope I made the right decision and good luck to you!!! :)

nursing home- nights 7p-7a. What to expect?
It does have skilled nursing, but it also for long term care patients. I guess what I am most worried about is night shift...I almost feel like I only took this job because it was the only place that offered me one. Do a lot of new grads start out on night shift at LTC facilities? I I just hope that I made the right choice!

Interviewed Today
So glad (not salad, haha!). Also, I was going to say that I have never had experience with this many patients as well. But the nurse who hired me said that the other new grads who she had hired recently were doing great! So I am sure that we will get used to it in time. It is going to be challenging, but if we can face those challenges, it will make us a better nurse in the long run. Good luck and let me know how your orientation goes! :)

Interviewed Today
I am in the same boat, pretty much...I was just hired yesterday at a LTC facility as a new grad and will have 24-30 patients to a unit. I am working nights...so nervous about that!!! I am looking for advice too, this is my first job! Salad to hear I am not the only one, lol

nursing home- nights 7p-7a. What to expect?
I guess there also might be an LPN on staff as well as 2 STNAs...but they did say that it was rare to only have one RN in the whole facility. So I wouldn't be entirely on my own...

First interview ever...advice??

nursing home- nights 7p-7a. What to expect?
Hi! I have just accepted a full-time nights position at a nursing home/rehabilitation center. It is 7p-7a and I am a new grad. This will be my very first job as a RN and I've never worked night shift before anywhere. I was told that the nurse to patient ratio would be about 1:30. Is this normal? I guess I just feel like that is a lot of people to handle as a new grad. Also, as this is a nursing home, what kind of skills do you think I will learn and what do you think a typical night would be like? I am super nervous as this is my first job. Orientation starts in 3 weeks, so what should I be doing to prepare (besides the paperwork/physical..stuff like that). I thought maybe go over some gero stuff from school. Any thoughts? Thanks, Avia

First interview ever...advice??
Thanks munchiekon!!! Thanks to all of your help, I had my interview this morning and it went really good. They offered me the job and I got hired! They only asked me a few questions...none of the super hard ones though. I was kind of surprised. I am actually quite in shock that all this is happening so fast! But thanks for your help! :)
