This is for all those who have changed careers....what did you do before you decided to become a nurse??? This is just to satisfy my own curiosity....I am currently working in retail and have started prereqs for a nursing program. However, I'm also considering becoming an elementary teacher...I thought if people would share their stories it might shed a little light on my own situation. Thanks....

I was an Executive Assistant for the President of a Fortune 500 company. I loved it. But, my boss retired and I was not doing the things I did for him for sometone else. I did all of his personal business too. God, it was such a cushy job. Worked from home on the laptop when the kids were sick (he was never at the office, he traveled 4-5 ddays a week, corporate AMEX card...but not worth it for someone else. Plus, he helped put me through nursing school after he retired and I quit. I still miss it sometimes. I was on call 24/7 for him though.

My favorite former job was as the D.J. for the local nite club-it was so much fun!!

Specializes in burn, geriatric, rehab, wound care, ER.

Darn - I thought this was a thread about past lives. I was going to tell you about a psychic that told me that I was a healer in a past life and was persecuted because of it. I took that to mean I was a herbalist that was burnt at the stake for being a witch. It made sense to me - my first staffing job was in a Burn Unit. Double darn - I wish I could have shared that story!

Specializes in ED, ICU, PSYCH, PP, CEN.

I was: carry out person in grocery store, checker, telephone operator, installer repairman (lady), gas station attendant, motorcycle parts inventory, video store clerk, school bus driver, physical therapist assistant, hotel clerk, the phone company gig was 20 years. I think I may have more jobs to list but I forget now. Alot of the jobs were at the same time.

I love nursing and it has been very good to me. I graduated in May of 2003 ant the tender age of 47.

i worked for fedex in the customer svc dept. ick! then, i got pregnant and stayed at home and then had 2 more babies after that. i am still a sahm, but im a student too. it took me awhile to decide what i wanted to do for sure, nursing was always something i could see myself doing. im just nervous for when i actually start working, having no experience working in healthcare....
