Foreign nurses are taking/replacing nurses here in the USA?

Published

i just heard a comment from someone, who said that once i am a nurse that i will not be getting what i expect. they said that the usa, in general, is paying nurses to come over here, and work for less...therefore driving down the hourly pay for nurses and taking more jobs, that could have been given to us people from here. now, i don't want to make this a debate, i'm just curious if this is true.

i wouldn't exactly call it outsourcing..but what is it? if so, this is very discouraging. my fiance works in labor and it seems like everything is being driven down to pennies by the "outsiders"...but hey, i blame the greedy people who hire them. they aren't doing it for any other reason except for lower wages/labor. can someone give me a little input on this?

i live in nyc and i have to say, the last time i was in the hospital i was very surprised that none of the nurses and assistants spoke english very well at all...it was painfully obvious that they weren't from here...again, not discriminating..but i wonder...are usa citizens sort of discriminated against since we want better wages? is this why people say that medical assistants are replacing lpns etc?

over here in nyc a registered nurse can expect to start off making $36-40/hr. (honestly, for the stress nurses go thru i think it should be way more). this is fairly decent and may seem like a lot to others..but keep in mind that we pay $1,400 for a tiny studio in a decent area of queens (not even in the city). so our $36-40/hr translates to about $20ish/hr somewhere like down south or the midwest. definitely a liveable wage..but i think for the intensity of the job it should be more. ok, enough blabbing..i just need some feedback and views on this. thanks :)

Nurses from other countries wouldn't have so many jobs in the US if employers didn't give them those jobs. I've worked at places where non US-born employees were 90% or more. Somebody had to cause this phenomenon by hiring these workers to begin with. When one doesn't like this setup, one goes down the block to the next employer.

. majority of nurse come over on a green card so the employer has to pay the same as a usc/resident and it is checked that they are doing so.

how do these nurses get their green card? do they have relatives who lives in us?

it seems like every places i work, there seems to be always foreign nurses working there. why do you think these nurses come to us? i'm sure its because they can earn money by working in the us as a nurses then their own country. i think those positions should be filled with graduate nurses or us nurses first then consider foreign nurses. not only foreign nurses are filling nursing jobs but they also network with each other. they tell their friend where they are working and talk to their managers and by giving them a good reference they are being hired immediately.

the nurses are getting their gc because the employer petitions them for it. currently foreign nurses are under retrogression and have been since oct 06 and many have been waiting since before then for a visa and still waiting. for some they come because the money and opportunities are better others come just to gain nursing experience in another country. i know i was looking at the us and had a job and my reason was to gain experience outside the uk as i had been nursing in the uk since 1986 when i started my training. now living in canada and cancelled usa and loving it here. getting my nursing sorted is taking time but hope to be nursing here later this year. the hospital that petitions the foreign nurse has to prove that they was unable to fill the job locally. it is a long process to be licensed in the us and if you check out the international forum vis the region link there are many threads there of nurses waiting or going to another country

i think its wrong to give them a permanent residency green card. now they can become a us citizen in 5 years and they are going to stay in this country. i'm not happy with giving them a work visa but now they are giving green card? that is so wrong.

but getting a work visa means the hospital can pay them less than a us nurse and abuse them. this is what used to happen and why it changed to a gc. it offers them the same protection as a us nurse. it isn't easy for them to get a gc and what is wrong with them staying and becoming usc? many countries have been made up from immigrants and sometimes a diversity is a good thing. many have been waiting over 4 years to get a gc and the category they are in also covers many other professions like it.

I would rather foreign nurses get a green card than a work visa. I agree with Miss Dragon. Foreign nurses who come here to work deserve the same type of protection from low wages and abuse just like the nurses who were born here.

YES, this is my idea exactly. Foreign nurses are NOT always hired due to a shortage...they are mainly hired because most are willing to work for less. I know this personally.

When you're coming from a crappy 3rd world country, $23-25/hr sounds AWESOME. You come to NYC and make that, and feel on top of the world. But in reality...you're being ripped off and driving down the pay of other nurses when you settle for less. It really boils down to the greed of health corps.

Deanna Dear.... foreign nurses IN the MAJORITY of the time are hired because of shortage, are places where any of other nurses wished to work, even if you will pay them one million bucks :D. And THEY foreign nurses are paid just like you are, neither more neither less is a law. Deanna you are racist by your comments "3rd world" is the world from where your ancestors was came also. If you want more money... come here in California and work with Zuzi the nurse's work that Zuzi did! I am so sorry we don't have charge nurses or managerial positions opening and neither a lot od chairs for cushion jobs LOL but working a hard working ass job position for sure... work like foreign nurses will be paid like foreign nurses...

No one down the pay to no one... just work like we work... and you will be ok!

Zuzi, it wasn't a racist comment. It was just a really rude comment that was unnecessary.

i'm not trying to be biased because i am not. but there are so many people who graduated from nursing school and they cant find jobs becuase foreing nurses are hired before them. are other professionals like doctors, pharmacist, social workers, psychologists hired in us who are not educated in us? i think this country should start hiring people who are us educated first.

Yes, other professionals are hired from other countries. More attention is given to the practice of looking for foreign trained nurses though. As long as employers take advantage of every opportunity to engage in this activity, it will be a fact of life for American workers. When I was starting out, I asked why the workforce was from overseas when there were three nursing schools in the area. My supervisors could not give me an answer, but had to agree that there was a preference in hiring taking place, in spite of a local supply of American graduates.

right now, we are in retrogression. there aren't as many foreign nurses coming here for work. and i think your comment "because foreign nurses are hired before them" is rather presumptuous, they could be u.s. citizens for you and your friends know. i think the problem right now and it's mostly due to the current economy is that employers are looking for more experienced nurses plus it depends on the area of the country and how severe the shortage is there. i'm sure new grads are getting hired in at places but i think for the most part employers want someone with experience that they don't have to devout money and time to train them. this happened to my friend who was laid off from her clerk job, she interviewed for a position but was told she wouldn't be selected because they wanted someone who had experience in that particular job so they didn't need to be trained. i'm not gonna sit here and be sore at foreign nurses for coming here. i don't blame them as the conditions were probably worse in their own country. i put all the blame on these employers who bring in workers whom they pay less and give them less benefits all to turn a freaking buck.

i always tell anyone i know who is in nursing school to apply for a nurse tech position after completing their first year of school. it gets their foot in the door and 9 times out of 10, they get hired when they graduate.

i have heard this theory of yours many times before, and quite honestly, it makes me sick!

an officer at the border gave me attitude when i went to renew my tn visa and basically said something like what you wrote above.

my then fiance begged me to keep my mouth shut, but i just couldn't. so i will tell you the same thing i told this officer: i came to the us because my then fiance is a us citizen and it was the only way for us to be together. i didn't come for the salary, because i made more in my country.

i didn't come for the social/health insurance "benefits" because i had better coverage and much lower costs in my country.

i didn't come because the life style in the us is better since i think that social conscience and life style just suck in the us!

i came from a country that is rated in the first 3 best health care systems, and where quality of life is as good as it can get. we work hard, but we value our personal time/family time just as much. we start off with 7 weeks of paid vacation per year. our education is paid by our taxes (which isn't higher than the us taxes, before you ask). univeristy cost me 200$ out of pocket per year. should i continue?

despite being the land of all hopes, i find that the us is very much backward in so many areas that i feel sick to my stomach on a daily basis to witness the injustice, racism, narrow mindedness and greed going on here in the us of a! there are many immigrants who come to the us because the image this country projects outside is one of ease, affluence and freedom. but, to this day, i have yet to meet an immigrant who thinks that the image projected is anything like what they have experienced since coming here !

wake up my dear, your country is certainly not a god send, and many many americans live below the poverty level. the violence is unheard of in any other industrialized countries!

this is not a land of opportunities as far as i am concerned. there is much segregation going on. much censure as well. education is the least of all priorities and that is because it is much easier for governments to manipulate a nation of ignorant people.

there is much hatred and i am ashamed to ever be associated with the pettiness and narrow mindedness of so many people in this country!

the only real "americans" were the indians living on these territories before the colons came and killed most of them, then parked the survivors in reservations. nothing to be proud of!!!

people like you seem to forget where you came from. do your homework, learn your history, and stop spitting mean comments to create more hatred.
