For those with Nursing caps, please answer asap

I am surprised you spent the money. IHCC grad here from 1997 and alot of my class borrowed a cap from someone. As I recall I think the stripe just goes on the front. If all else fails talk to one of the clinical instructors she will know.

I just purchased my schools nursing cap and stripe today, and took it to a sewing / alteration place to have the stripe put on. The lady asked if the stripe is supposed to go all around the corner to the back of the cap, or just folded over and only be seen from the front? I haven't a clue. Please respond because I'm suppose to call her back in the next couple of days. The book store people didn't know either.

Also next year when I get my RN stripe, will I put it on the same cap or does it go on a second cap? If it can be put on one hat, should the LPN stripe be in a certain place on the cap?

I'm so confused. I did a google search and nothing answered my questions.

Do you mean the front side of the cap, or just the front portion? The stripe should go from end to end on the front side of the cap, if you were to flatten the cap so that it lay straight. Does this make sense?

HI, Thanks for the reply! We don't get to have class pictures like you all had, (I think they stopped in 2000 ...new dean & director.) If we want photos, I was told we all have to go out on our own, so I definitely wanted to get a cap. I only paid $10 and it will be used as a keepsake sitting pretty in my curio cabinet. We don't have many veteran clinical instructors left, that's going to be a tough one. Mary Jane K. is retiring soon, I think she's the only one who would really know so I'll ask her. :)

Well, the stripe is longer than the entire length of the front. I was wondering does the stripe go completely around the corner where you can see just about 1/2" on each side from the back on or does the seamstress just fold under the extra material and sew from one end to the other so no stripe is shown from the back underside of the cap? I only had my cap for 5 minutes, so I'm not sure about flattening it I'm not a sewer either so I'm really ignorant about sewing/fabric language.

The stripe that I bought, (many years ago) had a sticky back to it, all you had to do was pull the paper part away and apply the stripe to the cap. It went from side to side on the top part of the front of the cap, I don't think it matters if any shows from the back or not. I just cut mine to fit. Never had any problems with it.

This is how we did it when I first graduated 36 years ago. Open up the cap and lay it flat on the table. Lightly mark where you want the stripe. For example, if you want the stripe 1" below the top. Use a pencil and just mark it very lightly. That way the stripe will be even all the way across. We never sewed our stripes on. We used K-Y jelly. When it dries it becomes very sticky and yet it washes out when laundered. The stripe could then be removed if soiled and easily replaced. The stripe folded around and about 3/4" to 1" on the back side of the cap.

The ribbon went across the front and about 1/2 inch inside.

I used a little rubber cement to hold it on because I had to remove the ribbon and clean the cap on my weekend off.

I was just going to post that if it is too long, it folds around to the back. And I had three, one to wear, one to wash, one to starch and slap on the mirrow to dry.

When we got capped during our Freshman year we received plain white caps, followed by black diagonal stripes on each side at the bottom of our caps at the beginning of our Junior year, and a long black stripe which went all the way around the brim of our caps our Senior year. We used KY jelly to hold the stripes in place, as it dried fast and washed out easily.

Thank you all a great big bunch I wish I would have known about the k-y jelly & rubber cement before I took the stripe to be sewn on. I'll know better when I get my RN stripe & newer cap next year :)

Back in the days when we wore caps...

We opened the seam the width of the ribbon at each end and tucked the stripe (ours were velvet ribbon) into the seams. If it wanted to sag (I never had a problem with mine though) my group went the K-Y jelly route.

I didn't know anyone even got caps today much less had to put stripes on!!

40 yrs ago or so, we also used K-Y Jelly to place them. Just on the front with just a bit overlap on the sides.
