I start a BSN program in the fall and though I am excited I am really glad for summer break. I need a break from school!!
What are your plans for this summer? I have a lot of things to do before starting in the fall, I'm sure most of you will be doing similiar things....CPR healthcare provider class, immunizations, finding an affordable place to buy clincal uniforms, shoes, stethscopes, etc. I'm not sure where I'm going to get the money for all this...lol
I might get a job in the hospital but then again I think I might just like to do nothing all summer except lay by the pool and get a tan while my kids splash around....lol Relax before things really get hectic in the fall ya know?
Anyways, what are your plans??
Has anyone had orientation yet? We have our new nursing student orientation this wednesday, I'm kinda excited about that!
I plan on taking Anat/Phys 2 this summer and getting a job in a hospital. I should have my CNA license by the end of May. For CNA class we had to get all our immunizations and CPR. Already got a steth and BP cuff so I guess I"m set. :)
Orientation is in July. Our school provides all books and uniforms will be purchased after school is started becuase they call someone in to sell to us.
Good Luck to everyone! Woot!
I start in August. My orientation is sometime in June. I have to take CPR, physical, shots, uniforms and whatever else they tell us we need in June. Other than all that I am going to enjoy the last summer I will have off with my daughters, 12,6,and 5. I will be getting my 5 year old ready for kindergarten . Going to the zoo, to the pool and getting my house organized so it will be easier to take care of during nursing school!!! Going school clothes shopping with my girls!! (Lots of Fun!)
I also plan on listening to my heart sounds CD and practicing with the stethoscope and BP on anyone who will let me!!
Congratulation to All! May you have a restful and peaceful summer!
I just found out today that I've been accepted to an Accelerated BSN program for the fall. I have to take an intense Biochemistry course May 22- June 12 to satisfy their two chemistry prereqs. I may also take Human Growth & Dev over the summer & definitely CPR. Hopefully I won't run into trouble w/immunizations: my mom is an RN and she has given many of my shots at home -- like my last tetorifice recently and my Hep B series many years ago. I currently work one full-time job M-F and another PT job on weekends. I will be quitting my FT job sometime between July & Sept and picking up more hours for the PT job in order to have some source of income during school. The rest of the summer will probably be spent stressing out over financial aid and how we'll pay the mortgage for the next 2 years!!
Congrats! I don't think the immunizations should be a problem for you. As long as you have her signature with "RN", it should be legal proof for you immunizations. (At least I hope so.)
Good luck to you!!!

school doesn't start for me until late august so i have the entire summer to keep busy.
my summer consists of:
a brief 6 week paying-gig as a nanny
preparing to move, moving [to a place about 4 hours away], and then unpacking
cpr certification class
digging my bike out from storage. i'll be biking to school [gas + parking garage fees are way too much]
shopping!!! [scrubs, stethoscope + the millions of other "basics" i'll need]
I'm taking my College Algebra class so I don't have to in the fall. I'm also taking a class called Ergonomics and Occupational Wellness Conditioning. Which is only a 1 credit class, I'll be finished in a week. Both classes are finished by June 9th. Then I'll be finding a part time job to save up because I won't be working during the fall semester.
I'm ordering my stethoscope next week some time. The rest of that stuff is going to have to wait for my studen loan money. lol I finished up my BLS for healthcare provider course last week. It was actually kind of interesting.
Anyway, I hope to make at least one small trip to the ocean or something before I devote the next 2 years straight to nursing. :)
I'm moving then taking 15 credits at a private Jesuit university that are a requirement to start the Accelerated BSN [for residency].
I have to take several philosophy and theology classes. I am an atheist. It should be loads of fun.
In addition to the classes, I am going to help my fiance start her acupuncture practice - I'm not planning on working but, you know the saying about "idle hands"...
Working hard and playing hard and enjoying every second of sunshine and warmth and family time I can!
Someone above mentioned cheap place for shots, etc. I found out yesterday that our state labs will do the titer tests wicked cheap but have to go somewhere to get the blood drawn- they told me to go- get this.... to the local STD Clinic!! They will draw the blood for next to nothing and send it to state for me with an order for the tests! i can just see it now- SOMEONE will see me heading in there and then the roumors will fly! But hey, a student has to do what a student has to do! They also do some immunizations and provide CHEAP HEP series! For that I will hold my head up high and walk right in! Geez,I hope nobody I know is there for something else!!!
Remainder of shots can be had for about $10 each (TB, Teatnus, etc) at a semi-local Visiting Nurse Association which will also do my physical on a sliding fee.
I'm going to sit by the pool and read "brain candy" books and mindless magazines like People:chuckle Actually, I'll probably start working with my Dosage Calculations book, get my CPR, and go spend $$$ on my books and stuff! I am also going to spend a lot of time with my daugher,as it will be her senior year next year and my son, who will be going to the University of Louisville instead of UGA next year (6 hours away, rather than 1 1/2) Hey I might even make dinner for my husband now, before the craziness of studying takes over again!

I'm starting an Accelerated BSN class in the fall. I've already gotten my CPR class out of the way, and most of my shots are done. I do need to get that school physical. I'm paying off one last credit card, and I'm lucky in that I'll be quitting my current job in June and will have about a month and a half off before orientation in August. So I've got about three medical appointments before my really good health insurance disappears - this includes an eye appointment for updated glasses, a dental appointment, and of course the physical appointment. I've sent off for my interim health insurance from BCBS of NC and I'm actually surprised it's not that expensive (all I want is protection in the event I'm, God forbid, in a car wreck or something horrific and unforseen happens). I'm thinking about trading in my car for something with better mileage (can ya'll believe the price of a gallon of gas?), and I've got to get scrubs, software, and a PDA (all required items for my school). I got a stethoscope for Christmas as well as the latest Taber's (despite the PDA, there are some things I really have to have traditional hard copies of!).
Hint to all - save your receipts; my understanding from my accountant is, if it's required by your school, it's a tax deduction. I think I'm even going to see if the cost of gas per week to get to school can be deducted - seriously!
DH and I are going to take a trip to SOMEWHERE, we haven't decided where yet, and I plan on relaxing in the backyard until school starts!
