Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.
It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.
I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.
I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!
It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:
- Why nursing?
- Semester goal
- 3 year goal
After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!
Then she started the syllabus, in which:
Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.
Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...
She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)
Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).
She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.
She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)
So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).
We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm
So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)
Comments are welcome!
Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!
Today I had my Clinical Concepts and Skills lab and lecture. It went pretty well, we had about 20 students in our one section so it will be nice to get the personal attention. We went over the health requirements, uniform order forms, and clinical information for next semester. We also went over the grading system...we have to achieve a 76% on every paper, assignment, clinical demonstration and exam unless our total grade for the course converts to the failing one. In addition to that, we need to take a math exam (for dosage calculations and such) and a medical terminology exam that we need to pass with a 90% in three attempts (unless we fail). Lab and lecture count as one grade so if we fail lab, then we fail lecture. Next week the class will start doing clinical skills on the mannequins in the lab. (Can't wait!) Tomorrow I have my Concepts of Nursing class and I'll write to see how that goes...I'm just so proud to finally be called a nursing student. Keep the posts coming! :typing
My first day was yesterday. It was a lot of orientation. We were supposed to get our lab kits and everything, but they weren't in yet, so we get them next week. Mondays and Wednesdays, I have fundamentals and nursing skills from ten to four, then tuesday and thursay, I have my assessment class, fundamentals lab and my PE class. I had to take three extra classes this semester to get my scholarship money because our clinicals don't start until march (so I wouldn't be a full time student until march... lame.) But our classes don't seem to be so bad yet. Maybe it will pick up after this week?
well we had our first quiz on fundamentals, i studied my butt of, on so many subjects as we were told to!!! i was doing ok, and kinda getting the nclex style question but we had fill in the blank, and my memory went away!!!
most of the class is expecting d's or c's and i am with them!!! i will come back and let you guys know!!!
and now i am studying for my pharm test!, so i will be arround more, since there is no tests for the rest of the week!
darn it the teacher is giving us the fundamentals grade only next week! and pharm is corrected on the spot!
The first exam is usually the wake up call and gives you an idea of what to expect and how to study for next test. Good luck with the Pharm exam!

I had my first day on Monday, there where about thirty-six of us. It was a little unorganized. Alot of people came unprepared (go figure). Some wasn't in thier uniforms or didn't have the proper ones on. Others didn't bring in thier skill lab bags that have the supplies we were going to use that day. They had alot of handouts that they wanted to give to us, but the printer broke:confused:. So hopefully we'll get them on Thursday.
My first day was skill labs from 8am to 12pm. We went over hand washing techniques, they put some glo in the dark lotion on our hands, then we had to go wash them and they checked us under a light to see how well we washed our hands. Then it was on to isolation techniques. They showed us how to put on and take off our protective wear.
They lectured some more, and on Thursday we have our first check offs for handwashing and isolation. Tomorrow is my theory section.
We won't go to the hospitals for another four weeks. They explained to us what to expect. The instructors told us about all the resources they have available to assist students. They have alot of open skill lab hours for us to take advantage of. (that's where I will be) Along with round the clock instuctors there to assist us with question and help on proper techniques. I thought that was wonderful, it seems like they give you everything you need to be sucessful in the program.
I can't wait for tomorrow.
I am officially done with day two. I started to think "What the hell am I thinking." The schedules and syllabus are scary but as my co-worker said, "Take it one day at a time." and I shall. Lots and lots of reading (yeah, I know that is to be expected). We have to print out our own handouts (my poor printer), we have a media site with additional lectures we are required to view, and of course go to class and study outside of class.
So far, it has not been horrible. I have a little bit of an advantage in some areas because of my previous schooling and work experience, but in no way will I be slacking off. I am determined to finish this with the best grades possible, but I am reminded. A "C" equals RN! Glad to hear that everyone else first days are going alright/good. Take care.
oh one more thing,
We've already formed a study group, it's six of us five women and one male:smokin:
Our first study day will be Monday since we don't have school. One of the women in my group is a REALLY nice young lady I met at orientation, she and I are both good in math. Another lady in our group, this is her second time, she got kicked out the first time because she couldn't pass med math. She said that she had only missed by one point She also admitted that part of her failure was do to not being apart of any study groups. She will be good at telling us what to expect and sharing the knowledge she has from her first go round. The others in our group I don't quite know there area of expertise, but they share the determination that the rest of us have....and that's to succeed in the program. That's good enough for me.
Well my first day was Monday, but I didn't get around to posting. Class size is near 50, I think; one of the largest they've let in. Lecture is Monday and Tuesday (health assessment professor on tues is going to give us all a nap we didn't intend! ) Clinicals will be on Thursday when they start.
Very tiring so far; need lots of coffee to be sure!:smilecoffeeIlovecof We're all still in the scared phase I think, there's just so bloody much!
The university grading scale is different from the nursing scale too! C+ (what we must make to pass) starts at 80, and a B+ is 89-90! Problem for me is, I can't just pass, I have to make at least a B+ and I've heard that even good students often have their grades drop in Nursing school. If I fall below a B+, I lose a lot of money and get kicked out of my university's honors program. So I'm really stressed right now! :uhoh21: Aaaand I took on an extra class this semester - a biology independent study. Luckily there's not too much to it; I'll do mostly just research this semester and the lab work in the summer. Still...wondering how good an idea that was...
All right... I am back LOL
After a crazy begiining of the week!
So, toady, we had our pharm quiz, 40 question all nclex style!!!
it was not easy we had, med admin, parenteral,IV,med calc, peds, and geri all together. well, we got to use a note card but of course it did not have what i was looking for, so..!
after we were done we went on break, the teacher corrected them mean while, and it was ok...! we all got around c+ b-, i got a 82.5 which was ok, we had a chance to review it corrected, and what i missed was stupid things, so i corrected my thinking right on the spot! so then we began our antibiotics lecture, OMG that chapter is huge!
after that we went on break and back to fundamentals, where the teacher thought would be nice to surprise us and give us our grades, nah we did not do good, most of the class got d-+ and a few c's, there was a couple of b's i got 84!!!! i was so happy! it was so darn hard!!! but it is ok, it is our first time taking NS tests so it gave us an idea of what to expect! there were 2 A's on the class, of course none of the a's work at all, and do nothing but study, (although they are really nice people)!
after that, we went on bp checks, pulse on each other, and we had our bp clinic in the cafeteria!
tomorrow we have 2 hour guest speaker presentation on test taking skills, and then we have 5 vitals check offs! bp, pulse, temp, pulse oxy and pain!
and friday we have air&blood path and HIPPA!!!
all i have to say is: dont read too much into the question, study what your teacher said, get that down, and then study what she did not enphasized that much because it will also be there! do all your practice question, go to your text book, we have access to mynursinglab.com which is great, they give us pre/post test on chapters, videos ppts, and a whole other bunch of things (for fundamentals only)
now i can tell next week will be ok, since we have durg dosage, pre test, practice tests, a pharm quiz and fund quiz, andonly a few chaps to cover, and then prepare for the test 2! for fund and pharm, which we will have a quick review on! then we have to go to skills lab and show all our skills, hand washing, hygiene, bed bath part/complete, changing an unocupied bed, changing an occupied bed while doing bed bath, doing vitals, PPE, and sterile field! and then CLINICALS!!!
they told us the we had too much info and too many things to do for the first 2 weeks, but i can see that it helped us getting in track!!! now things are flowing a bit better, and i am hoping to get a couple of A's if i can on my quizzes, but if not it is still ok, all i want is to be able to learn, get used to nclex style, and be a good NS-student on my clinicals!
i like all my teachers, they are so kind!!!! (strict, but so kind!) and my nursing director who is an angel herself!!!!
all my fellow students so far are great to be around!!!:redbeathe
hopefully i will be able to keep my grades some what ABish and breeze through this, i am proud of what i accomplished working/studying ft and if this is the pace, i think i can do it, it is stressful, there is plenty, but pleeeeeeenty of info, but... i all will come the NS spirit is coming to us LOL:D
so to all i wish a great week at school and let keep our experiences here, so the one's that are coming around can get an idea! and we can read this a couple of years from now and laugh!.
Csantos!
Ok...I am no longer a nursing student but I was at one time....I graduated and passed NCLEX in 1989 ----seems like forever ago!!!! I am not trying to hijack this thread but I sat and read everything that all of you wrote and want to let you know that even though I graduated a looonngggg time ago reading your posts makes me remember it like it was yesterday so I just want to say I am planning on following all of your progress and I want to wish each and everyone of you the best of luck.

My first night of class was last night. I was so excited that I hardly slept Sunday night and my day at work seemed like it was dragging on forever because I wanted to get to school.
There are 45 students in the evening/weekend program. We all have skills labs on Monday and lecture on Tuesday and then 8 hour of clinical on either Wednesday evening or Saturday morning. Last night we all show up and there was a lot of confusion. We ended up all sitting in the larger lecture room while the instructors figured out who was supposed to be where and with whom. It took a little while, but once it was all sorted out, the night went well.
We spent some time getting to know the instructor and each other and then started practicing taking vitals. It was very exciting to just be "doing" something!
I just can't believe that I am FINALLY a nursing student!!! I hope that we all have a great semester!
