First day of nursing School *unleashed* post yours

Published

Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.

It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.

I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.

I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!

It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:

- Why nursing?

- Semester goal

- 3 year goal

After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!

Then she started the syllabus, in which:

  • 50% are tests
  • 10% presentation
  • 10% group work, participation
  • 5% post test
  • 25% finals.

Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.

Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...

She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)

Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).

She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.

She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)

So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).

We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm

So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)

Comments are welcome!

Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!

I am jealous. We never got to practice on any thing "real"...we didnt even get an injection pad!!! All we had were simulated mannequins that didnt work, because the instructors didnt know how to work them. So, we were on our own!!! Needless to say that i got all my practice in clinicals, at a strangers expense (and a really good friend who is a home health nurse, that has lots of supplies, and showed up at my house, boyfriend in tow, and insisted i practice)

Good luck to you..keep us posted!!!

Wow, Csantos! Your instructor sounds like she doesn't play! I like reading threads like this because it reminds me to always be on my toes. :)

Today we got to give injections to tomatoes and fruits!

we got to learn how to withdraw from a multidose vial, and we administered SQ on tomatoes, and were checked to make sure we were not deep, and that a bubble formed between the pulp and skin! (great way to train huh?)

then we took the pretest for drug calc and i scored 90% i missed 1 question!!!! which is great (although of course there was no IV questions just yet)

after that, we had lecture on

-hand washing (aparently JHACO is watching FL closely!) we were told 20 seconds of rubing not 15 as all books says!

-hygiene, complete bed bath, partial, assisted, bag, and so on

-foot care (no nail cutting for us!!!)

-perineal care/bath

-brushing (no flossing!!!)

-talking to the patient

-assessment

-how to assess while doing hygiene,

-some care plans (with goals) were taught to end with with "my shift" "my care"

ex "....to make sure client does not choke on MY SHIFT"

now comes the fun part

CHECK OFFS!!!

we have a list of 150 check offs that we will learn tomorrow, and be checked off friday, so many of them and they are pass or fail!!!

did you guys have things this intense? so much info, so much things!!!

today i was called on the board to explain one exercise of calculations, lol i blushed!!! =^.^=

my answer to ALMOST every calc is find X... it might take longer but you dont have to remember a whole bunch of formulas!!!! just transfer it into an equation and find x (of course for the basic stuff)!!!

so there you go!!! i will keep it going!

WOW YOU GUYS USED FRUIT...I"ve learned something new:D

Were you really nervous doing this skill? Glad you aced the pretest, I know from your previous post you have been practicing for awhile now. I have the basic formula down packed for finding oral dosages. Over the weekend I plan to review how to calculate IV rates, drip factors and Peds.

Continue with the updates as time permits, its really appreciated:heartbeat

I have been using so much time management!

listen to lectures on way home, and on way to school (1 hour commute each way)

on drug calc: iv drop rate, drip factor, and peds it is not hard (again the basics) but there are exceptions to the rule, as i learned here on all nurses!!!

there is a burn iv rate, and other things!

once you get oral meds down, basic iv, gtt, and peds come easy

there are factures to analyze though, so i am not going to crack my head now on it, since only 5 of us got a 90 ^ on the pre-test, we will have EXTRA lecture on drug calc (on the afternoon on the math lab)

so i am not stressing on that!

_______________________________

tomatoes were cool, they raised just like a tb test does!

we had small needles 30g 1/2!

amazingly i did not shake at all!!! i was confident (i guess because i did not think of it until i did it, so i did not get nervous, i had one of my teachers starring at me and next thing i know she said PERFECT!!!) some other kids had to do it a few times!

i though the resistance from withdrawing from a vial was cool! it is a strong couter pressure!

the only injections i gave were lovenox, on my dad on the abdomen!!!

ps: it is mid night i got to go home, am tired, my eyes burn, and my tomy hurts from the cofee i drank (large one) so i could drive!

CSantos.. are you in an ABSN program?

I start my ASN program the 20th. I have a CPR class and orientation though next week. I am actually enjoying my time off before I start HELL! lol. I'm sure it will be interesting but also very tiring, time consuming, stressful, and emotional.

Congrats! It's great to hear about everyone's first day..mine is this Monday. :yeah: I'm excited/nervous because I printed out my syllabi and they cover so much information (40 pages each.) I actually can't wait for break to be over (sounds crazy) and I will definitely post about my first day when it comes!! Good luck to all.

I'm not in nursing school yet, but should I start studying drug calculations right now? What books should I look at?

You can take a look at this thread there's so helpful info;

I start Monday too!!:yeah: I will have my turn to post about my first day :typing For all of those that was able to see there syllabus I envy you. I haven't seen mine yet:uhoh21:. I just got all my books yesterday. And on my first day of school is I have skills lab.

Hi csantos, I am going to Keiser too, but in West Palm...and I also just started my core nursing program! It sounds like you are doing alot more than us so far. We are not doing pharm for another month though (i think), because the last group was so stressed out by it, they got overwhelmed. Here is my snynopsis of my first week thus far. Day 1: introductions, followed by syllabus and general info., then we learned hand hygeine and got checked off, then we had a lecture over 1st 2 chapters in fundamentals.

Day 2: chapter 3,4 lecture, HIV, and HIPPA seminar and quiz

Day 3: chapter 5 lecture, told we have vital signs test on monday and given homework on that chapters worksheet. Some students had to get their drug screening done

Day 4: chapter 29 lecture on asepsis, learned how to apply sterile gloves, went over sterile field and how to use and suit up in PPEs

tommorrow we have a quiz over 7 chapters, monday quiz on vital stats, and tue. TEST over the 7 chapters

We start clinicals on Wednesday, and i have no clue what i am doing! So here is the schedule for now til pharm kicks in..M/ skills T/ lecture W/clinicals R/skills F/lecture..all about 8-1, except clinicals 7:30-3:30.

I am trying to get organized and find some kind of system for studying but it's tough until I know how our instructors will test..My brain is going to have to expand some i think, reminds me a bit of A/P, but with the added factor of worrying about how i'm going to ever be able to do an IV when I haven't even learned how to find the apical pulse on MYSELF:confused:. By the way, we have 5 dummies in our class for doing all sorts of experiments on...poor things..well good luck and I'll look forward to hearing more about your Keiser.

Terrific thread--thanks for starting it, Csantos. Like LiveLoveLearn, I'm not actually in NS yet and hope to start in the fall. I'm really enjoying reading your posts and hope new nursing students will keep adding to the thread.

Good luck with your first semester! :yeah:

My first day is quickly approaching, Monday to be exact. I already have the syllabus for my Nursing lecture and Skills Lab. I still need to finish up a couple of more immunizations, and then I should be good to go.
