First day of nursing School *unleashed* post yours

Published

Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.

It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.

I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.

I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!

It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:

- Why nursing?

- Semester goal

- 3 year goal

After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!

Then she started the syllabus, in which:

  • 50% are tests
  • 10% presentation
  • 10% group work, participation
  • 5% post test
  • 25% finals.

Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.

Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...

She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)

Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).

She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.

She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)

So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).

We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm

So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)

Comments are welcome!

Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!

Hi csantos, I am going to Keiser too, but in West Palm...and I also just started my core nursing program! It sounds like you are doing alot more than us so far. We are not doing pharm for another month though (i think), because the last group was so stressed out by it, they got overwhelmed. Here is my snynopsis of my first week thus far. Day 1: introductions, followed by syllabus and general info., then we learned hand hygeine and got checked off, then we had a lecture over 1st 2 chapters in fundamentals.

Day 2: chapter 3,4 lecture, HIV, and HIPPA seminar and quiz

Day 3: chapter 5 lecture, told we have vital signs test on monday and given homework on that chapters worksheet. Some students had to get their drug screening done

Day 4: chapter 29 lecture on asepsis, learned how to apply sterile gloves, went over sterile field and how to use and suit up in PPEs

tommorrow we have a quiz over 7 chapters, monday quiz on vital stats, and tue. TEST over the 7 chapters

We start clinicals on Wednesday, and i have no clue what i am doing! So here is the schedule for now til pharm kicks in..M/ skills T/ lecture W/clinicals R/skills F/lecture..all about 8-1, except clinicals 7:30-3:30.

I am trying to get organized and find some kind of system for studying but it's tough until I know how our instructors will test..My brain is going to have to expand some i think, reminds me a bit of A/P, but with the added factor of worrying about how i'm going to ever be able to do an IV when I haven't even learned how to find the apical pulse on MYSELF:confused:. By the way, we have 5 dummies in our class for doing all sorts of experiments on...poor things..well good luck and I'll look forward to hearing more about your Keiser.

we definately have to be friends!!!

our schedule is definately different!!!

as you saw my days this week!!!

*****

-today we got checked on hand washing, bed making with soil retainer "chuck???" and hospital fold(my bed looked so nice i wanted to take a nap on it!!!)

-tomorrow we get checked off on making an occupied bed, bed baths, hygyene, peri-care, hair care, foot care

******

NEXT WEEK

-monday we have to get to chap 9 of pharm !!! Oh God!!! so much lecture! i will record it all! we are supose to hand in all up to chap 6 (only lectured chaps 1,2,4) straigh up lecture man!!!

-tuesday we have a test on fundamentals chap 1,6,16,17,31,33

and then we have vital signs, and lecture on 26&29

-wednesday we have lab for pharm and begin vital signs lab (am ok with that already)

- thursay we have a guest speaker on pharm and then vitals check off.

- friday we have hblood/air borne path. HIPPA

*****

WEEK 3

we have a whole lot of PPE sterille field and lectures, and more lecture lol!!! and a pharm quiz

week 4

we have our 1st drug dosage test on monday, and lecture. on tuesday we have fundamental test 2, and on wed we have pharm test then we go right on deviding the room, and doing the whole skills learned put together like an assessment, and we have to do all we learned and get cleared for clinical, since my clinical is friday i ahve all thursday to reviw, wich i am going to school so i can go to the lab, and practice a lot with my buddy since we are together and doing stuff together on clinicals (both of us with no experience, but we made the best bed today and the fastest we had only 5 in!!! to introduce and all ) then i will study, and get things ready, since we are having clinicals on a hospital (stll LTC floor) i have to go there on thursdat and get my info and get my patient info.

HERE IS WHERE HELL BREAKS LOOSE :i work until 12 am, get home at 130 am, have to be on the hospital at 6 am, and have to commute one hour and a half to get there, i live in davenport near you and have to drive to sanford which is way north of orlando!!! it is 70 mile ride man!!! so i have to leave by 515 am, that means that i have to wake up at 4 so i will have 2.5 hour sleep!!!

i asked my boss if i could sleep on the office here since it is only 25 mins from the hospital! lets see what happens (we do have a gym here on the building with yoga mats :D and a shower:yeah:)

because my lovely manager did not give it to me off!

Wow! Your program is seriously intense! It's like a full time job! It's interesting to see how each school does things differently - though we all sit for the same licensing test. My program starts on the 20th...and we've already had 2 days of orientation (one clear back in November). We had 12 books to buy!! And our syllabus (Nursing101 lecture, lab and clinical) is almost 130 pages long! But I'm grateful, after reading your posts, that we have a lighter load. Lecture - once a week, 3 hours. Lab - once a week, 3 hours. Clinical - once a week, 6 hours. And then we are also taking pharmacology...but I get to take it online! Thank heavens! Anyway...keep up with the sharing! And keep up with the good work - you're doing great!!

Csantos..hmmm..you better be careful with that schedule, can u switch it in the future? In regards to your work I mean? I am a bartender and tried to do my usual shifts while taking micro and ended up with pnumonia..and that was getting about 4 hours of sleep! We are starting clinicals on Wednesday and I've only been checked off on handwashing! But we took BP in class today and Monday is skills lab so I think we will be covering a LOT on vitals at least...which is good as i have NO exp. and many others do. So we had our 1st quiz today and everybody got Ds or Fs, even those of us that have been studying our brains out and never get D's...and this is with her telling us what was going to be on the quiz, i know that the questions are very analytical and they might all be correct answers but many of these were very debatable. Obviously this left the class very deflated as we are not sure how to study for the actual test on Wednesday which really counts. I am hoping she made it extra tricky so we will know what we are up against because i feel pretty knowledgable with the chapters. Anyways keep in touch, I will definitely post to all the lurkers about my first day of clinicals...that should be a good one..LOL...oh and my program is 16 months, is yours the same? Catch you later.

How exciting! I'm excited about starting my class. We don't start until Jan.20th. Next week though some assignments are suppose to be posted (so I heard from orientation). I've already bought all my books and have been reading thru them. I haven't bought my pins or uniforms yet but am going next week (when my daughter goes back to school).

I'm looking forward to my first day and first semester. I've waited so long for this to happen and it's all getting closer!

Have a great semester everyone!

Lecture - once a week, 3 hours. Lab - once a week, 3 hours. Clinical - once a week, 6 hours. And then we are also taking pharmacology...but I get to take it online! !

I want your schedule! We are in class/clinical 26 hours a week. Yikes!

Hi all! i just got done with my homework so i can talk a little!

so friday we had check off on making an occupied bed while doing complete bed bath at the same time, i was nervous, but it all went ok!!! we have a big test on fundamentals tuesday, which is going to be a bit tough 6 chapters!!!

my school got all of us access to www.mynursinglab.com and added a fundamental class there for us to do, we have to test every chapter pre and post test! i took my pretest and got a 67 but then i took the post test and got a 89, so that is better! they are not grading us on the web, but we still have to do it!

mondat we have some stuff to do in pharm, and tuesday we have test+ lecture on vitals! i was very nervous on friday, everybody noticed, i could barely speak! but it was ok!!! i am more comfortable now.

so i have to get my reading done ahead for monday and start preparing for the quizz, which i hope to get a C at least!!!! it is tough guys too much info!!! way worse then a&p!

You are enjoying your semester, I see. I'm happy for you. Good luck!

Well, I sorta had a first day - nursing school orientation on Friday (I'm in a BSN program, but sophomore or not we still have an additional orientation just for the start of nursing). I was fine all day until I got home, then a bit of the panic started to set in. My first class is in....oh, about 12 hours. I know somewhere down there I'm really excited, but I'm feeling terrified right now :p. I'll be sure to post my official first day here tomorrow night!

My first day of nursing school yesterday! It was great! They accepted 63 students this time aound (from their usual 60, which was really nice of them). So when I walked into this big auditorium, me and my friends all went straight to the front....LOL (well more like second row, center). Two of the Foundation professors came up and just talked...and talked.... and just talked some more about the policies and syllabus of the class. Some people were starting to doze off, but I just couldn't. I was just hanging on to their every word. (I was just so happy and thankful to be there). I was honestly wishing they could talk about what we should expect in the nursing program as a whole, not just stick to their class. But the two teachers were REALLY nice! One thing about my school is that they TRULY care about you. I mean, they were even CALLING ME to make sure that I had everything turned in and ready so I could have a good and complete nursing application. (Normally it's the other way around.)

So anyway, sone of the professors gave us this 12 page syllabus of the class. The grade breakdown was pretty good, IMO. It is

15% quizzes

15% presenation/papers

35% three exams

35% final

as far as my nursing schedule goes, I must be really lucky. I have Monday Foundations from 9a-12p and Basic Nursing skills Wednesdays and Thursdays 7a-12p. I don't have any other classes so I plan on making A's! (and working as a on-campus tutor. At least I can get paid to study and help people study)

On Wednesday will be my first day of the basic skills class. I will post my day here as well. Good luck Csantos and everybody else starting nusing school!!!!
