First day of nursing School *unleashed* post yours

Published

Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.

It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.

I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.

I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!

It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:

- Why nursing?

- Semester goal

- 3 year goal

After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!

Then she started the syllabus, in which:

  • 50% are tests
  • 10% presentation
  • 10% group work, participation
  • 5% post test
  • 25% finals.

Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.

Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...

She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)

Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).

She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.

She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)

So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).

We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm

So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)

Comments are welcome!

Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!

Thanks for the post! I am so happy for you and can't wait to start my nursing program in May. It seems like you had a very long day, and I hope that you enjoy yourself while attending classes. Way to go! Please keep us soon to be nursing students informed. Good Luck!:yeah:

Sounds like your first day went well, congrats :). I love reading these first day posts. I like to think it gives me an idea of what I can expect on my first day, which is swiftly approaching. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience!

Congrats on your first day! I can't wait to be in your shoes. I have two weeks to go and i start!!! i feel like i've waited forever and it's finally about to happen. It's like counting down to christmas when you were a child. Hope everything goes smoothly this semester. Good luck.

Congrats on your first day!!! It must feel sooo good! I have orientation on Thursday and the first day is Monday....I can't wait! I don't think I will be able to sleep on Sunday night!!!:D

oh my goodness! :yeah:that posting was exactly the type of thing i want to hear more of. i am awaiting acceptance into the rn program this next fall 2009 and i've been dying to get a "head's up" on what nursing school is like. i look forward to hearing about more of your days at school and clinical--when you have time, of course--haha. :chuckle

How exciting!!! I don't start for 2 weeks, but we have orientation all day on Friday. I can't wait to get started!

oh they will give us a little injection pad to try...

OMg that does not even yell ouch! how will i know???

In my program we gave each other SQs and intradermals. Yes, we had the little pad to practice on first, but then on to the real deal :)

I just remember my first day after hearing all the stuff that was due, all the things we would do and everything i dont think my jaw ever left the floor. It was one of those, holy crap, this is the real deal now. We were told that for our weekly check offs that we would be giving injections to each other. Once you get that first out of the way, its super super easy. Grab a couple friends, go to someones house and practice. Get that first stick into someone over with.

My first stick for an IV was on my clinical instructor and oh my god, I was nervous as anyone could ever be. But I had 3 others stick me before that so i knew what to expect, that made it easier. You will also get plenty of chances in the hospital so dont worry

Thanks Yall for all your support!

Jean, you always have wonderful things to say! it encourages me!

Well today we met our fundamentals teacher, the woman is simply amazing!

she is the assistant manager for FLsouth er unit, she has been in law inforcement prior to nursing, then she was a detective, today she is working on her PhD, she is also a NP, and some other certifications that i forgot!

Well, she is fast on the game man!

after introducing herself, she went on teaching! and we went over 4 chapters, since we only have lecture 1 day a week for pharm and another for fundamentals, we are already going to have a quiz on this chapter, first thing in the morning, 60 nclex style questions, and 1 hour on the clock to answer!

Even though she is cool, she is strict!

-can't sip on botled water

-doors locked after 10 min

-cell phone ring you are dismissed for the day

- late from brake = go home

she gives real life experiences, and often talks about how all the psychological aspects work on a scenario, making it easier for us to understand!

well, we had so much to do, 4 chapters, and i took so many notes!!!

what is interesting is that she ahs done it all, and is happy about it, you know, like it feels like she is on a battery (good to keep us awake LOL) very interactive also! asks questions to us all the time!

she was the head of a ER in jersey, and was one one of those discovery trauma shows, where the wife had stuck a machette right into her "cheating" husband's forehead! so we could even see her in action!!!! (not on class of course we youtubed it later!)

well, she is strict, finals are 30 percent of the the lecture grade, and our over all is devided in 3 lecture, skills, clinicals!

she kinda give us headsup of what is going to be on the test with a quick ***sigh*** and who did not pay attention missed it!

she said since we have so much info, lets filter it, so you can study a lot of the "important ones"

Well people, all i can tell you is that it took me from 330pm until now to type my notes, and sumarize the chapters! all i have to do tonight is answer the studyguide so i can be all done, and start the "mandatory pre reading!"

*** for you that is going to start, study, and plan ahead! so that you can review, review, and review! NCLEX QUESTIONS!!!!

so my fundamentals experience was great, very energy consuming, and my yeyballs are buring now but... it is ok!

now tomorrow we have skill labs to learn, higiene, hand washing, and also a pharm lab, which is going to be... dosage calc! (we have to take a pretest! if we score 90 on it we dont have to take the actual test!!!) but i dont think we are ready to pass it now!!!, after the pretest we have 3 hours of it.

what scares me is that we have to pass the administering medications, with 100 % (one time) or we fail pharm!!!

we have 3 chances for drug calc!!!

so... i will keep this going, since it is good for those who want a sneak peek, and great for me to look back at it when i graduate!!!

Wow! Sounds like you had quite a day. Hope your quiz goes well.

This is awesome! I start my first official day on Monday and I am like a child on Christmas Eve! Keep the posting up and I can't wait to start the same next Monday! Keep it goin!
