Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.
It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.
I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.
I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!
It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:
- Why nursing?
- Semester goal
- 3 year goal
After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!
Then she started the syllabus, in which:
Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.
Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...
She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)
Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).
She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.
She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)
So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).
We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm
So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)
Comments are welcome!
Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!
Well, three weeks over with now (..after friday that is). I've had my first exam (patho) and made a 98! Everyone in the class I talked to though agreed it was really easy. The first exams that really worry us, Fundamentals and Health Assessment, come up next Monday and Tuesday. I'm horrified at those to be honest, lol. And the page long study guide we got for our fundamentals exam really melted down to: "study everything we've done so far". Very specific and helpful, you see...
My first skills check off was last week - just simple handwashing and putting on sterile gloves. I was so nervous though! lol, when I opened the outer plastic covering of my sterile gloves, I pulled it to far and the paper package popped up in the air! I think my eyes must have looked like saucers :uhoh21: . Luckily the package remained closed and landed right back on the table.
Tomorrow's check-off is making an occupied bed and one of any bathing scenario we've studied (we won't know which until we show up).
And I'm working on my biology project
And my professor wants me to apply for a big funding scholarship for it (which involves a fair bit)
And I'm trying to get onto an orientation leader spot for next years students (which involves training all this semester)
And I've really got to start working in some volunteer time for my academic organization
And I'm still trying to stay involved in my political organization
*sigh* back to work now....
Wow...this is a great thread, and thanks to everyone for their input, and thanks, Csantos for starting it! This now gives me an idea of what it will be like for me when I start nursing school this fall. I'm new to Allnurses, and so far I have found this forum to be very informative. Please keep us posted on your progress, and I will be sure to post what my first day is like when my turn comes. First day starts August 24th, and I'm VERY excited!!
Today is Sunday, humpf! thank God all the major tests are done for the month!
although tomorrow we will have a quiz on 4 chapters, that were not even covered in lecture yet!
so i have been studying it (pharmacology, analgesicx, anti inflamatory drug comp ASA... etc)
and have to start watching my movies for assessment since this tue/wed it willl be all about assessment!
I am sure that a BSN is hard, but when you think that you want your degree faster you will take an accel ADN, you will pay for it LOL there is pleeeenty of things to get done in no time!
Hey thanks for keeping us up to date ...If you need help with communication
Im your chick! If my patients are AOxs 3 ..we end up becoming BFF
Commnication is one the most important things we learn (I think) ..As students we get patients where the primary nurse is like "good luck with that one" ...after talking to them for 5 minutes, they open up to you and you find the root of why they are miserable ...Its usually something that would drive ANYONE crazy.
Its so therapeutic and important ..if you need some pointers throw me a message
Other than that good luck, thank you again for keeping us up to date. Im very excited for you, I know you will become a terrific nurse one day
Well, this is the beginning of my fourth week of my first semester in nursing school and I must say that I am feeling more confident about it than the last time I posted. I've been studying my hind parts off and it has paid. I have had two tests so far (one in assessment and one in fundamentals) and another on wednesday for Nursing skills, and I've done well. As a matter of fact, most of my class has done well . Today we learned how to change the bedding in an occupied bed and do a bed bath on a pt. (not in that order) and tomorrow we have checkoffs on sterile gloving and we learn how to insert a urinary catheter on a pt.
Csantos, you are taking an accelerated program? Wow. I don't think I could do that and work full time. I hope you continue to do well! :)
All right!
Last friday we had our first clinical experience, but we did not interact with the client,
- we first got a hospital tour, went through every unit (not a big hospital) got to see everything
- we got our badges done!
- we got EMAR and ECHART training and they gave us this hand bible (huge book on how to chart on the pc)
- we got a free lunch pass to the cafeteria! (by the way they had great food, real good! great wraps)
- then we had one class, of hospital policy and restrain etc....
We were divided in 2 clinal sites, some got to go to a LTC nursing home, but we got to go to a acute rehab unit at the hospital!

Ah i got 97 questions right of my pharmacology test (100) it was so cool!
then we had a dug calc test today, it was a prep test for the famous 90% & up test that you have to pass!!! i got 100!!!! it was so cool!!!
now tofay we got our clinical pack with our 1st client sex/age and 1st medical diagnosis, then we have to feel this THICK care plan!!! when we go to clinicals, omg there is so much info to be added, but i like it, since it will help guide me through what to do, and what info to get, and then we have to look up a lot of the client information to add to our care plan!!! no kiding 20 + pages of spaces to be filled with info.
I got a classic 82 yrs old male with CHF and all the extras that comes with it!
so most likely sundey i will come and post on what happened!
classes are finally getting way more interesting, and i am absorving way more material, the NS freeze shock seems to be wearing off, and things are starting to fall in place! I even got an A on my internet based assessment test!
I dont think that i will make A's on these classes, but i can guarantee that i have/ will learn a great amount of info!!!
Ok my first clinical experience was awesome!
I was so worried, that i would go blank, and don't know what to do when i got in contact with my client for the first time, but it all went wonderfull!
We had a pre-conference with our Great intructor!!! then she said just be your self, go get the report with the nurse and get on to know your pct!
- The nurse was really nice, gave us the reports, and what not so we were out own!
- I went to the room introduced my self, washed me hands, and it was Breakfast time!
- I got the tray, cross checked the name and diet, assisted him with the food, and went to make decaff coffe for his wife (she was grouchy) but when i came back with decaff for her she became really nice, thanked me and said that for the past 15 days no body had gotten decaff they said that they did not have any! (duh! i went to the staff lounge and made some! not that big of deal! and after that she became real friendly)
- I assisted with that, checked for vitals, and was doing my hourly checks, bed bath, changed the bed, (the tech that was supose to help me was never there!!!! she never checked on him once!)
* Oh when i went to chart my vitals, she had charted pulse ox 98% (i never got higher then a 93 on him CHF COPD CAD++++) so i charted mine right on the top!!!
well the day was sorta bosy, since i had 2 friends, with more accute clients, that needed constant changing, and helping, saw a stoma bag, changed a few depends, changed a few beds, and even had some patient teaching, and back rub!
it was really nice! and i guess the tech was never nice to the clients there, people did not have socks, did not have tooth brushes, shampoo, or anything like that, some were even on the same clothes from the date of admission (3 days).... blah!
i wish we had more time lol! 6.30 am - 3.30pm was not enough!
when we left for the day they were making faces, because we would not be back on saturday, and some would not even want the tech on the room!
i really enjoy it!!! and poop does not scare me any longer! it stinks, but so what?
we had a 20 + page care plan due on the clinicals and we got it done in between checks!
thank God, i paied attention on my computer training, because the charts were not always available!
and the Charge nurse was scary! :angryfire
CSantos, I am sooo proud of you! Sounds like somebody better watch out cause they might not keep their job if they don't start actually DOING it!
I am so glad you were able to make such a difference in these folks lives! See you are already getting good karma returns?!
Keep up the good work. BTW it amazes me that things like that happen.

Hi all.. and Csantos(fellow Keiser student), I have not posted in a while due to our hectic schedule here..
M skills lab and quiz over 2 chapters
T Fundamentals test over 8 chapters
W Clinicals/Careplan due
R Pharm quiz over 3 uncovered chapters
F Pharm test over 9 chapters
they r doubling up on pharm since we didnt have it for the first month...so our first test was over 9 chap. (inc. the antimicrobials lol)and just about everyone failed...miserably, but i studied super hard because i failed my first test last week(under 76), and was one of the survivors. My careplans take about 8 hours to complete...i don't know what yours are like but we have to look up every drug value, med, and inc. the nursing implications re: our patient with ALL of them then have 3 diagnoses with 2 st goals and 1 lt goal each and about 5 pages of assessment stuff. I am fortunate to be at a hospital and on med-surg. I need to get kicked in the butt because
I am way behind some clinically. Anyhow, I am passing with probably a mid B average but am used to straight A's.........Quickly getting over that issue..lol Talk to you all soon..keep on keeping on.

Last Tuesday was the first day of Nursing Skills I. We just went over the syllabus and talked a little about the program. Nothing major. We would have had Intro to Nursing the day before had it not been MLK day. In the meantime, I keep hearing about how overwhelming it all is, and how people drop out because they can't handle all the work. It didn't seem that bad to me, but I knew there would be more to come with Intro.
This Monday was the first day of Intro, and that's when they unleashed it all on us. They explained all this online stuff that we will have to do (Medspub), in addition to the online Nursing Success course we have to do, plus all the videos we have to watch (a ton!), AND all the time we have to spend in the lab practicing skills. They made a joke about passing around the smelling salts for all the people who were going to faint!
Personally, I am not that daunted right now. I don't know if I am in denial or what. Last semester, I took A&P I, Microbiology, nutrition, and speech. They were my first science courses since high school, so that was all new to me. I got used to having to study EVERY single day for hours, and having at least one test, usually more, every week. Maybe that's why I'm not that afraid yet. I know everyone else is scared, though!
Other than that, class was cool this week. In Skills we started practicing putting on our PPE and sterile gloving. I already feel good about that part. So far, I'm just really enjoying it all!
