First day of nursing School *unleashed* post yours

Published

Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.

It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.

I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.

I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!

It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:

- Why nursing?

- Semester goal

- 3 year goal

After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!

Then she started the syllabus, in which:

  • 50% are tests
  • 10% presentation
  • 10% group work, participation
  • 5% post test
  • 25% finals.

Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.

Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...

She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)

Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).

She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.

She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)

So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).

We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm

So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)

Comments are welcome!

Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!

Hi all.. and Csantos(fellow Keiser student), I have not posted in a while due to our hectic schedule here..

M skills lab and quiz over 2 chapters

T Fundamentals test over 8 chapters

W Clinicals/Careplan due

R Pharm quiz over 3 uncovered chapters

F Pharm test over 9 chapters

they r doubling up on pharm since we didnt have it for the first month...so our first test was over 9 chap. (inc. the antimicrobials lol)and just about everyone failed...miserably, but i studied super hard because i failed my first test last week(under 76), and was one of the survivors. My careplans take about 8 hours to complete...i don't know what yours are like but we have to look up every drug value, med, and inc. the nursing implications re: our patient with ALL of them then have 3 diagnoses with 2 st goals and 1 lt goal each and about 5 pages of assessment stuff. I am fortunate to be at a hospital and on med-surg. I need to get kicked in the butt because

I am way behind some clinically. Anyhow, I am passing with probably a mid B average but am used to straight A's.........Quickly getting over that issue..lol Talk to you all soon..keep on keeping on.

WE have the same tests and the same careplans, since Keiser has that huge 20 page standardized care plan with 3 diagnostics 2 short terms and 1 long term goal per diagnose!

I used to be straight A's also, and now am on the high B average on all my classes, there might be a chance though to get an A but i am not sweating it! there is just no way! i study too much already! and have to work so i am ok and thank God :bowingpur for my B's!

i am ok though, i am learning my material, and am not left behind, infact i am one of the top ones still LOL!!!

believe me or not, but there are people that have not passed 1 test yet, on either class!!!

i love clinicals, we are on an acute rehab- med surge floor!!!

it is very hactic, this program is so fast passed! so much info!!!

i feel ou on that 9 chapter pharm test we had the same thing, geri peds.... with antimicrobials...

it was crazy i over preppared my self for that one and hit 98 outta 100!

so.. right now, i am getting readdy for my fundamentals test:

caring-stress-assessment!

and pharm:

chapter 10-16!

thank goodness we did the assessment chapter already that was a long one! They threw out the quizzes in lab(thank goodness)it was basically over two more chapters aside from pharm and fundies and just too much..things should be a bit more realistic for us at least...we are kind of guinea pigs with this whole doubling up on pharm thing...i'll let you know how it goes...i think we have quite a few people that are currently failing as well, it's tough alright..i wish we had before and after pics of when we started, all bright eyed and bushy tailed..and now we all look like the walking dead..lol:yawn:

Good job!

I never see the CA's when the students are on the floor. Theyre usually in the break room talking smack while we hustle and bustle

yeah i passed another week of pharm..can't wait til its over! This week we have chap.17-23 in pharm and chap.36 and 37 in fundies, i think, I know its wound care and perioperative care. I have my midterm assessment in clinicals this week so that should be exciting..I have huge respect for my instructor so I cant wait to hear her advice for me..gotta go study good luck everyone!

I start fundamentals on the March 16th, I cant wait im so excited. I will come back and tell you guys all about my first day. Good luck to everyone, i love this thread its the greatest. Toodles :wink2:

ahhhh the good old days; i remember when i was this excited. it's nice to see all the enthusiasm here :)

CNA know it alls, ha ha!

I've definitely experienced this within my own class. The CNAs are the ones who will try to be right and go out of their way to make you look like you have no idea what you're talking about. It's very irksome. The EMTs aren't so bad, but they're clearly favorited by the professors.

That's my little blurb. I'm too exhausted to go into detail about my first day. :p

how could i be so excited!!! i am now burned out!

LOL end of the semesteR!

hi there new to the forum, anyway i am a lpn planning on going back in august for my rn through a bridge program i will have to continue working part time, i will also need to take all of the prereqs, can anyone tell me average about how many of those classes i should take at one time, i am new to the whole college thing so any suggestions would be of great help

Ok so my first day was on Monday the 16th, today is the 4th day and I must say i don't know if im coming or going. So far its just a lot of information. We only have one class this semester and that's fundamentals of nursing. But our classes are only 8 weeks long. So we only have 7 weeks left. The first test is march 30th. I feel like i have no idea about what to study, the instructors don't give any study guides or anything, so im just a little confused about what to study. Overall the first couple of days have been pretty good. The days are long class is 8:30-2:30pm and then i go to work from 3pm-10pm on most nights. Everyone in the class is nice and everyone seems to get along well, we have a class of about 35 people. I will come back and post about how the first test goes.

Thanks so much, right now im just a little confused about all the legal aspects of nursing, i think i might be going a little to deep into. But when it comes to legal aspects it can be a little much. Also we are still doing basic stuff so I need some information about stuff like Maslow's I really don't quite understand how that works yet.
