Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.
It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.
I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.
I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!
It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:
- Why nursing?
- Semester goal
- 3 year goal
After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!
Then she started the syllabus, in which:
Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.
Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...
She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)
Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).
She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.
She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)
So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).
We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm
So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)
Comments are welcome!
Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!
My daughter begins nursing school this fall working towards her BSN. She was one of 20 chosen as freshman to be in the program. You all know how hard it is to get in. I love these posts because it gives me some insight as to what she'll be doing.
Would it be possible to hear where you all are going to NS and if it's a BSN, ADN, or a hospital program? I read Keiser but that's the only school mentioned.
THANKS!
Hi everyone, I can finally reply back on here as I am on break and have a little time...I start Med Surg and Peds next term at Keiser, yeah I passed the first term! I must say that I never realized how difficult this endeavor was going to be...definitely the hardest thing I have ever done. But it is all the more rewarding when you realize how much you have learned and accomplished. Sadly we lost a few students this term who didn't make the cut..it makes things bittersweet because I have no idea how I could cope with getting cut from the program. And it is scary to know how difficult it is to just pass..never mind getting the A's most of us were accustomed to pre NS. So hat's off to everyone enduring out there...and everyone about to begin this journey..it is a journey..much larger than just becoming an RN....and if you allow it to, it will change your life completely, and for the better. You will grow in ways you never dreamed of..because without a little pain there is no growth! I probably won't be on here for many moons( til next break) so everyone take care and good luck..

It was so nice hearing from you again - First of all let me congratulate you for the hard work!!!
I am so glad that you were able to make it also!!!
it definitely takes a big toll on ones mental/physical being! Keep is up to date, share good info or come to get help!!!

So yall... MED/SURG is no joke, it is hard, and that is when you will put your brain to work and dig into all that old stuff that you thought it was hard in A & P !!!
MED SURG is hard, complicated, fast paced, but it is so interesting. we had our first lecture on monday and right after the lecture I was amused on how much i had forgotten from A&P!!! I felt like the information was almost on the tip of my tong, (LOL my brain) so as soon as i got out of the class I went to the library and had a 2 hour review on all the circulatory/heart/blood flow/veins and arteries.... Then, later on when I was reviewing all we had gone over it all started to click!!! everything has a reason, and if you don't get it, take a step back and track the info back until the last "check point" where you were understand it and go from there!!!
I felt like this will be quite challenging, since we had 5 hour lecture on CARDIAC as our first MEDSURGE lecture, and it was a ton of info.... But my teacher was very nice in order to give us key points, focus points, practice questions and also fill in forms!!!
Lets see how it goes... Today i acquired one olympus voice recorder, so for I could record the important part of lectures and listen to it on the car (by the way on sale 24 bucks on amazon) or whenever I have a chance.
Since every class is different, I attempt all the different study techniques to see which one would help me the most since i am all over when it comes to learning style.
Hope yall are not bored reading all of this that I am writing, I just thought that it might help out!
So, I am starting OB tomorrowk, and don't know quite what to expect from it.. so far for the little I know I could see me working on a CCU unit or something like that.. even geri (because they need that little bit extra of caring!) but I can't quite see myself as a OB/LD - maternity kind of RN. I am still though eager to learn and try to get the most out of it, I have already met the Dr. that will be teaching that class, and she is a great teacher!!!!
well yall... good luck on your summer courses, Happy cinco de mayo, dont party too hard, and dont study too much either!!!
give your brain a break (yeah right) and try to take a step at the time!!!!
Time will just fly by and when you look back... you'd be WOWed when you realize how much you'd acomplished!!!
I still remember the day I posted "ALL ABOUT THE NET"!!! ~ more than 1 year ago!

Hi Cathylady!
I am in a BSN program and I go to Ursuline College. It is a really great program and I've been very satisfied with my experience so far. This fall I start my clinicals, which should be interesting. I will be sure to keep updating on here as much as possible because I think it's important for everyone to know what NS is like. Congrats and good luck to your daughter!
Finally! The semester is over. I have to say I am a bit sad because now I'm trying to figure out what to do with all this free time when I'm not at work! I start a summer course online next week so that will alleviate some of my boredom!
The good news is, I passed! I was scared about mid-term but everything worked out for the good and I more than got bye! Unfortunately, some of my friends won't be going with me. It doesn't quite hit you at the beginning of the semester when they say 'look to your left and look to your right, at least one of these people won't be here at the end of the semester' until you get to the end and look back. I even forgot about some of the people bc the whole semester was such a BLUR! I am happy to say that I learned so much and kept thinking I was going to run out of room in my brain! My big purchase this summer is going to be a voice recorder, while it wouldn't have helped quite as much in my first semester, I hear it's pretty essential for next.
~thanks helpingothersinlife for recommending amazon for the recorder, i'm heading there next~
So, long story short, I gave my first vaccinations, all kinds of meds, lots of showers/baths and took WAY too many exams! I discovered I am NOT a geriatric nurse and can't wait to start OB/Peds next semester to see if I like that better! Oh yea and PHARM...UG....I can kinda wait for that!
Good luck to everyone! :onbch:
Thank you all so much for your experiences! I start this sept. and already am anxious to get the show on the road so my bellyaches can stop. I have been a veterinary technician for the last six years and am hoping some of my knowledge will be helpful in the human med world but I am scared to death. It's comforting to know we all start with similar fears.

we are the lab rats, so you can learn by our experiences!!! lol
My first day was Monday, May 4th. I have had a very good experience so far, and there is a lot of work involved! Let's see, our orientation was Friday, May 1st (3 days before the official start date). We learned as much as we could about policies/procedures & we attended "e-camp". The syllabus for each class posted on Monday morning (i got mine at about 6am.), class started at 8. Well, we found out that to have the "full" syllabus we have to buy it from the library. To buy the syllabus from the library we have to put in an order, and it was ready on Tuesday after 12:30.
I finally got my badge today, but that's not a really big deal. Overall, I am very happy with the program so far, and all of my teachers are really great. I am in a "fast track" program to get my BSN in 15 months. Our health assessment class is about 5 weeks long, and we have a mid-term, a final, and a final assessment examination. In another class we have a mid-term, final, and a group project. I am excited about this opportunity, but I am a little anxious considering our grade is determined by 2 tests!! lol, hopefully I will do well.
I just want to say that this is such a great thread, I just read it from beginning to end. It has gotten me so excited about NS. I am waiting to hear if I am accepted into Helene Fuld (NJ) for Spring 2010. I thought that waiting for acceptance would be the hardest part but now I see the actual schooling is! One day at a time right?
Anyway I love that everyone is so kind and supportive of each other. You really are a bunch of great future nurses!
Is anyone else attending or applying for Helene Fuld?

well yall, i was typing a whole big post here, but the computer froze and I dont have that much time left to write!
I hope yall are studying hard!!! well nursing school is not easy, as you probably know by now!
I have made it ok, and survived my first semester!!! - pharmacology and fundamentals!!! it was not easy!!! it is the beginning of a new career, and with no medical experience prier to this makes school even funnier!!!
LOL
it was fun to start trying to think like a nurse, prioritize, terminology, basic skills, and a whole new bunch of drugs to learn...!!!
"it is all about the therapeutic communication"
when we started the classes i thought it would be crazy hard!!! and it was... but looking back and after practicing skills on clinicals, and being able to co-relate the material of both classes it starts to click and make sense!!!
the hardest thing is to remember so many drugs and side effects, and interactions, and what they do, and how they do, and if they dont, and the nursing interventions behind all of that, and patient teaching..
...phew!
but it is fun and doable!!!
I thank God for the great pharm teacher I had - she made it understandable!!! sorta!
well tomorrow I start medsurge and OB...
and we are starting with straight up lecture on cardiac, 80 slides,!!! and i got tired just by looking at them!!!
good luck to you all
- hey- be proud of your self, even if you make a C!!!
NS is not for enyone!
