Fired...How will I get another job?

I graduated in May, started at an LTAC on August 25th and was fired yesterday November 14th. My license is intact but I can't get unemployment since I was fired...I need another job quick. This was my first nursing job however and I don't know what to do now. I know I have to list this job in my employment history but I think it will make getting another job impossible. Are my fears real...if I put down my CNO's name and phone number will she bad mouth me and keep me from getting another job? Am I allowed to call the CNO? I was escorted off the floor by HR..am I forbidden from stepping foot on the floor again? Not that I want to go back. :(

When I was hired, I gave references and provided reference letters with names and contact information, but the DON did not call any of my references...I know because she told me she wasn't going to but that she had to document that she had, she filled that form out in front of me reading as she wrote "supervisor's name" called on "date" at "time".

Any hiring managers out there, would you please answer the question...if you received my resume, how would you proceed or am I automatically out of the running?

Also I read a couple of posts form other nurses in similar situations and they were adviced to seek employment in LTC and at flu shot clinics...any other suggestions? Is a dialysis clinic an option?

Well why were you fired? I think the reason kind of depends on whether or not you should put them on your résumé or let a future employer contact them.

A background check may produce your record of employment there.

PP is correct. That job will show up on any future background checks - which are mandated by Federal law for any organization that receives reimbursement from Medicare/Medicaid... to that's pretty much everyone.

Getting fired is a traumatic experience but it is not all that unusual & does not mean the end of your nursing career. However, if it involved anything that is also a violation of your Nurse Practice Act, the employer is also duty-bound to report it to your BON - this could have very serious career consequences. If this was the case, you are not out of the woods even though it may take quite a while for the actual BON review to happen.

You need to be honest with yourself; examine how your actions/choices/behavior may have caused it. Potential employers do not expect you to be perfect. If you can provide an honest response - "I was fired because _____ & I learned from that experience. Since then, I _________ (things you have done to ensure that you will never repeat the same thing)"

If you quit / get fired, the prior job will show up on your background check???

Sometimes it shows up, depending on how long your time there was. As a former manager I would say it would concern me if you were fired for violation of the nurse practice act. Check employment law in your state. Most employers can not say anything but available for rehire or not. Some companies will only tell dates of hire. Did you check with your local unemployment office to see if you really can't file for unemployment?

Carrie RN, I did not check with my unemployment office, I just assumed since I was fired, I don't qualify. I don't believe I violated the nurse practice act. I was told I was being fired based on my performance. I asked HR how this would affect my license; she said it would not affect my license. I was given an HR hotline number to call but I don't know if I should call it; seems like every time I say something the situation gets worse.

What they did is usual and customary behavior. Tell your employer it wasn't a learning environment and you struggled but you are willing to learn and are usually a quick learner.

You just have to get back out there. Come up with something to say that is honest, but puts you in the best possible light for the future interviews you will have.

Who do you think GETS unemployment? It's for those who were fired/laid off from employment. When you QUIT a job, that's when UC is not a guarantee...

If you were fired for cause or negligence you may qualify but have a waiting period depending on the laws in your state. Resigning isn't an automatic disqualification.

I resigned once due to poor work environment, my case was granted but I had saved emails from my "supervisor " and HR that could be construed as job threats. The unemployment investigator actually issued a penalty against the employer for statements made.

I actually contacted the social security office in my area and was told that employment history does not show on one's background check. Who told you it does??
