Fired but asked to resign!

Hello fellow nurses,

Its been a while since posting on ALLNURSES.COM, however I feel compelled to post at this time.

Just recently (last Friday the 29th of Jan ) I was FIRED or better yet asked to resign from my position as a PEDS RN at a local hospital where I had been employed at for 2 years.

They fired me on the grounds that I had disregarded the attendance policy.

What baffles me is that I have seen several nurses and staff disobeying our attendance policy numerous times, by clocking in late or even calling out.

I feel that I was terminated more so for personality conflicts with staff in upper management. I am young and attractive, I get lots of compliments from patients and family.

They fired me and said Im a great nurse but hospital policy, blah blah blah on attendance.

I really feel discriminated against. Either because of race or maybe because of politics. All I know was I was terminated unjustly.

There was a nurse who even hooked up old IV tubing to a new patient thinking it was that patients tubing. Then come to find out that old tubing belonged to a patient who had HIV....

This RN is still working there!!!! Im hurt and feel as if I was wronged....

Can anyone give me any insite?

I've seen it happen and I've heard of this phenomenon in nursing. It seems like the higher you're self esteem is ,the more compliments you get,the better you look and feel, can actually get you ran off the floor faster. Are you in shape? Do you stand up for yourself when you are disrespected? This seems to be one of those "professions" where the more you smile coming into work the faster you will get terminated. Never seen anything like it.

To the OP, although there is a good chance you were fired because of breaking policy there is a GREATER chance you were fired because of jealousy, politics and favoritism. I'm not sure why so many people here don't choose to acknowledge that jealousy and politics are a HUGE part of nursing. They seem to play a bigger role in nursing then policy.

I acknowledge that it must be the case, sometimes, because I see it reported here so often that I can't believe at least some of the complaints aren't valid. I acknowledge the heck out of eriksoln's observations--in fact, I've been the employer in that situation, with a great worker who drives you nuts and an adequate worker who is easy to get along with. I was about to use the term "employee" rather than "worker," but the truth is, the great employee is the one who gets the work done with minimal drama. No one should have to be a doormat, but no one should go to war over every little thing, either.

I don't mean to suggest this applies to the OP. Just a general observation about "politics."

This is the deal.... if they want to fire you and you violate the attendance policy ... then you are going to get fired. It's true they may let other people ride, but these are their friends or these are longstanding employees or these are employees who do not stand up and make a fuss. If you stand up, make a fuss, or make a name for yourself, and come to the attention of the powers that be, than they have the discretion on whether or not to fire you. Wrongful termination cases are notoriously hard to prove.

Your best advice is to take it as a lesson learned and move on. Next time you will be wiser and you will not approach the job or the management team the same way. You can not underestimate the power of politics in the workplace and sometimes you need to humble yourself to avoid situations like this. Because if they want to fire you, and a situation arises, be assured they will fire you.

Gosh! I am so sorry for your situation, my thoughts of compassion go out to you! Get some rest and please don't resign!

To resign is to forgo getting unemployment insurance.

I am in your same boat, let go for no damn good reason.

Here's to our finding better staff to work with and a better paying job in the future!

I second the motion> As others have stated whatever you can glean from whatever behavior you may have done to bother others, whatever situation came up that you might have handled better think about these things and try not to carry them into the next place of work.

Do you need them for a reference? Do you need the unemployement $$$ more than a reference? Could they recommend you for hire, if you just resign? Make some kind of deal, and get it in writing!

I too, was asked to resign from a job when I gave them 2 week notice (apparently quite a few RNs did at the same time, and thought we all mastered some kind of plan to leave them short. Not true in my case, I was actually moving!) I advised them to fire me if they feel they couldn't use me for the next 2 weeks of work; BUT I didn't need them for a reference either.

So I enjoyed 2 weeks off and unemployment before I started the next job.

I think everyone here has given you great advice so I am not going to repeat.

I just wanted to say that I am sorry your having to deal with this. I hope you can look at this as a lesson to learn for your future place of employment. I do agree with the other posters...a lot of times if you just lay low and do everything your suppose to do,stay out of the drama, respect your managment (even if you really don't), and choose the right words to say when you do have an issue (not attacking or showing your emotions but asserting yourself), then you will be much better off.

I have had to learn the hard way. I am still at my place of employment but some of the things I have said about management (and they weren't very nice) to other employees have gotten back to management somehow...hmmm(I have decided to stop confiding in my coworkers about my job, especially if it is negative). This was awkward talking with management after it got back to them.

Hold your head up high (not too high, lol), and take this as a lesson learned. Good luck!
