Fired but asked to resign!

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

Its been a while since posting on ALLNURSES.COM, however I feel compelled to post at this time.

Just recently (last Friday the 29th of Jan ) I was FIRED or better yet asked to resign from my position as a PEDS RN at a local hospital where I had been employed at for 2 years.

They fired me on the grounds that I had disregarded the attendance policy.

What baffles me is that I have seen several nurses and staff disobeying our attendance policy numerous times, by clocking in late or even calling out.

I feel that I was terminated more so for personality conflicts with staff in upper management. I am young and attractive, I get lots of compliments from patients and family.

They fired me and said Im a great nurse but hospital policy, blah blah blah on attendance.

I really feel discriminated against. Either because of race or maybe because of politics. All I know was I was terminated unjustly.

There was a nurse who even hooked up old IV tubing to a new patient thinking it was that patients tubing. Then come to find out that old tubing belonged to a patient who had HIV....

This RN is still working there!!!! Im hurt and feel as if I was wronged....

Can anyone give me any insite?

Maybe an opinion?

Thanks

Maria

BooBoo? Who's BooBoo? On this site, my name is heron.

I don't know that show, The Real World, but in the real world I come from calling someone out of her name is like spitting in her face. Is that what you intended? If so, let's take it private, OK?

Just to clarify: I didn't state that politics doesn't play a part - of course it does. I'm 52 years old and know how to play to the game as well as anybody out there. I honestly don't have the time to play the catty game - not worth my time. I worry about me, the job I'm doing. I know the policies, procedures and the players. I'm reasonably attractive, told I look 20 years younger than my actual age.

My divergence with the OP is simple - there appeared to be no introspection, not owning of any part of her problem. We only hear one side.

A telling comment was on my evaluation by a peer - "She comes to work to work." What a concept. This person is a beautiful, 20something I enjoy working with (so does everybody else) because SHE does HER job, owns her missteps and is fabulous with patients and families.

We have one RN who was a forced re-hire. She stirred up trouble, went to upper management, etc. I didn't know any of this until way later.

I'm sorry, in my world, I just don't have the time or energy to expend on the catty stuff. If it's there, it's there, I don't have to be a participant. Our patients and their families cause enough drama (Peds ICU). If there is staff drama, I stay clear and TRY not to gossip. I'll help you out if you need help. If a co-worker starts whining about someone else, I'll direct them to speak with that person. You want to vent, vent and then go do your job.

I can function without drama. Have plenty of my stuff to cope with - don't need anyone else's help. Our unit is a better than average place to work, considering upper management (way above the NM) put together 2 units that really need to function independently, but we're learning. We are not an all female unit - we have several male RNs, as well as male residents and mostly male attendings (2 female attendings).

Back to the OP: attendance policies are black and white, easily substantiated. As in all cases, there are two sides to every story and the truth is usually somewhere in between.

For me, it is all about my patients and my job and owning what I need to own.

And yet strangely enough, its the ugly nurses you can't get along with.

Stop judging people on their looks. I am the ugliest nurse around. I will never be beautiful. But I am smart and I work hard. The most miserabel person on my unit is also the nicest looking.

If a person is chronically late, than they should be fired. I know 2 nurses that are always late. And they just don't see that this is a problem for others. Unfortunatley, we don't punch time cards, and as these nurses only work the night shift, management doesn't see them always arriving late.

I never judged anyone on their looks. As I stated earlier I treated everyone THE SAME so obviously I wasn't judging them on their looks. I'm sorry if you feel that you will never be beautiful. My standards don't come from magazines and television. Others may not think I'm beautiful but I do. If a person isn't doing their job then of course they should be fired. I did tell the OP to examine herself. I think you are misunderstanding me.

If comments like "scab-eating mouth breathers" roll off your tongue so easily as it appears then I don't think you're so nice as you'd like to believe... nor so attractive.

Did I call a member of this board that ? NO. I was venting as many people here do. I am sure you say things at home or online that you would never say at work. It sucks to work hard and care for your patients and then be told that you don't fit in because you work hard, take care of your patients, and don't show up for duty looking like you slept in your uniform. I have standards. sue me.

OMG! It's an expression. AND, I am way, way too mature to continue a disagreement with someone I don't know over the email on a private line. Are you still in high school? GET A LIFE.

yeah but twice so far you used a condescending expression (booboo and sweetie). It comes off hostile, tacky, and unprofessional. I think heron's right on the mark
