Fired but asked to resign!

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

Its been a while since posting on ALLNURSES.COM, however I feel compelled to post at this time.

Just recently (last Friday the 29th of Jan ) I was FIRED or better yet asked to resign from my position as a PEDS RN at a local hospital where I had been employed at for 2 years.

They fired me on the grounds that I had disregarded the attendance policy.

What baffles me is that I have seen several nurses and staff disobeying our attendance policy numerous times, by clocking in late or even calling out.

I feel that I was terminated more so for personality conflicts with staff in upper management. I am young and attractive, I get lots of compliments from patients and family.

They fired me and said Im a great nurse but hospital policy, blah blah blah on attendance.

I really feel discriminated against. Either because of race or maybe because of politics. All I know was I was terminated unjustly.

There was a nurse who even hooked up old IV tubing to a new patient thinking it was that patients tubing. Then come to find out that old tubing belonged to a patient who had HIV....

This RN is still working there!!!! Im hurt and feel as if I was wronged....

Can anyone give me any insite?

Maybe an opinion?

Thanks

Maria

Also I wonder how on earth do the PEDS patients tell their nurses on daily bases that they are beautiful?:lol2: Mkst of those kids are scared, frustrated and want to go home..do the 3 and 5 year olds pay attention to beauty?? please

Okay, sweetie. Calm down. How about just giving her some constructive advise that will help her in the future. You must be one of those people who feels that they always have to call someone out. Get a LIFE!

While I believe that the OP somehow contributed to her situation, that does not negate everything that she said. I graduated from nursing school at the age of 20. I was #1 in my class, passed boards with minimum questions, no studying blah blah blah. My point is that I was young, happy, smart, attractive, outgoing, and nice. NEWSFLASH. That is enough to make people hate you. "Oh here comes pollyanna" or "Oh great its supernurse" because I offered to help my coworkers. And YES it was always the fat, burnt out, saddled with kids and husbands, broke, angry nurses that were on my behind daily. Funny, the content attractive nurses appreciated my help and got along with me fine. I was once told that I was not a "good fit" with the other nurses on the floor and should transfer. I looked around at the wrinkled uniforms of the scab eating mouth breathers on my unit and said "I agree" with a smile. That was over 15 years ago and I still see it happening. I am not 20 but I am still attractive, outgoing, nice, happy, and smart. Sometimes that just ticks people off. Examine yourself and hang in there.

And I'll bet Little Miss Perfect is your favorite TV show.

Ugly is as ugly does ... and child, you are butt ugly no matter what you look like.

Our point is that the argument that it's the Beautiful People against the world is bogus if it's used as an excuse for poor job performance. Sure, toxic vindictive people exist, as is exemplified in your own post, which is one of the most vindictive I've seen here. And you're right ... when caught in such a situation it's usually best just to move on. But even Beautiful People have to be responsible for their own behavior and job performance. You don't get a free pass just because you're cute.

Did you imagine that your so eloquently expressed opinion of your less attractive coworkers didn't come across loud and clear on the job? Are they supposed to respond to your contempt with abject gratitude that you noticed them at all, trembling with awe at the obvious superiority evidenced by your glowing adorableness?

Attendance policies are black and white. The time clock is difficult to impossible to manipulate. We are expected to be in the report room with our behinds in the chairs at 0645 or 1845. Anything else is late and noted. We must follow call out procedures. As other posters have said, there is a procedure in place for dealing with absences/tardies: verbal, written, and final warnings. After the final warning - an occurence results in termination. I have been with the same manager for nearly 15 years and I've gotten 2 verbals for attendance issues. I expected that would happen, I own my issues.

Your coworkers who are calling out - maybe they have FMLA? You might or might not know that they have this job protection. I've had it before and while I didn't get paid, I at least had job protection.

As for the I'm so pretty/racist thing - get over it (I'll except flames for that one). In our unit, we have pretty, drop dead gorgeous, plain, overweight, skinny, and a racially diverse group of RNs.In age, I am one of the oldest. We really don't care about the above, just that you show up and give your patients the care they need and deserve. If we note that you are a slack a@@, no respect for you, plain and simple. Chatting up the docs instead of caring for your patients? No tolerance. Are we glad when some of our co-workers leave sometimes? You betcha - and it has nothing to do with looks, just the way you performed (or really, you didn't).

Examine yourself, try to learn from this experience. If you haven't resigned, don't. The hospital is trying to save itself from the uneployment dollars it is going to incur.

Although you say there are no politics in your unit, it's all about the job, we all know different. Women, especially women, are catty, petty and ridiculous to say the least. Of course jealously plays a part in out everyday work lives. Some people can't even function without drama.

No...BooBoo, little miss perfect is not mhy favorite show. The Real World IS!!!!!

What is the hospital policy. Can you be fired for being late once? That is what is so confusing to me. If the policy states that termination is after so many occurences, then you have a leg to stand on. I have never heard of being terminated for one time being late - but maybe I misunderstood you.

I agree with everyone else, don't resign unless you have another job. At least you can buy food with unemployment.

Never said I was perfect. I happen to be beautiful inside and out because I work at it. I am a great nurse because I work at it. I make excellent grades because I work at it. I am a great wife because I work at it. I never felt against the world but unhappy people had a problem with my attitude then and now. My job performance was great which was also a sore spot with the slackers on my job. How is my post vindictive? I didn't resort to personal attacks as you have. I relayed my personal experiences and I told the OP to examine herself. I only noticed their appearance and personal situations when I attempted to seperate the coworkers that I got along with from the ones that I did not get along with. I treated everyone the same but the response from "les miserables" was vastly different. They had those negative traits in common. They were miserable and I guess they wanted company. I wouldn't join and they didn't like it. NO I don't want to gossip about the girl that just left the room, NO I don't want to laugh at the NM because her husband just left her and NO I don't want to chat while the call lights are on. If that makes me ugly then so be it. You strike me as a very negative person. I hope you get everything you need out of life. I will ;)

No one is making an excuse for her lack of attention to the policies that exist on the job. All I am saying is that envy and jealous DO exist on the job and DO play a role in decisions that are made. True, she may have violated the attendance policy, but do I believe that in and of itself is the only reason she was asked to leave? No, and again especially if she works around women. It's just a fact.

I am in agreement with OPs who gave advice "do not resign." Your employer wants you to resign; they will not have to fork over $ if you do resign. Nurses can and do get unemployment. I know; I did for 12 weeks. In so doing, I had some $ coming in; this gave me time to look for a job and not take the first thing that came along.
Keep in mind, however, that if somebody is terminated for cause, they are not eligible for unemployment, either. It does make it harder on the hospital, though, because they need to be able to show cause. Tardiness and absenteeism qualify, though.

Personally, I'd decide if they have legitimate cause (objectively, not "well, other people..."). If they do, I'd resign. If they don't, I'd make 'em jump through the termination hoops and fight for the UI.

And yet strangely enough, its the ugly nurses you can't get along with.

Stop judging people on their looks. I am the ugliest nurse around. I will never be beautiful. But I am smart and I work hard. The most miserabel person on my unit is also the nicest looking.

If a person is chronically late, than they should be fired. I know 2 nurses that are always late. And they just don't see that this is a problem for others. Unfortunatley, we don't punch time cards, and as these nurses only work the night shift, management doesn't see them always arriving late.

If comments like "scab-eating mouth breathers" roll off your tongue so easily as it appears then I don't think you're so nice as you'd like to believe... nor so attractive.
