Feeling a little down about taking a summer class

Published

I have a summer class this year for Microbiology and none of my closets friends does as they all plan on going on many vacations together while I will be left out of it. My best friend even made fun of me that I won't be able to enjoy my summer fully and I'm now having second thoughts on whether I should just go ahead with this 4 credit hour class or not.

Without this class I won't be able to apply to the nursing program this fall because they require that the majority of sciences need to be done at the time of application. But it is really taking me everything not to drop this class's on a moment to enjoy my summer. I legit am forcing myself to buy these expenses books early so I have no other choice but to not back out of this.

I know I sound like a spoiled brat and I don't mean to but I really wish I had some friends who were also taking summer classes so I wouldn't feel so left out.

So I guess I'm posting this to see if anyone else have gone through the same situation I'm feeling and can offer me words of encouragement to stick it out?

TL;DR: Need to take 4 credit summer course but I'm feeling left out since all my friends are planning on going on a vacation this summer. How can I stick this summer course out without dropping it?

I get where you're coming from. I had a similar feeling because of how challenging my semester was. I opted for a 6 week pharmacology course in the summer instead of 12 weeks so I could have a break before I start the nursing program I was accepted to, and also because I wanted to go on vacation. If that isn't an option for you, I hope you see the huge benefit in taking this course sooner. Maybe taking some time off wouldn't be a bad idea either because you do still sound fairly young. Weigh your options but do honestly consider how serious you are about nursing school.

You aren't alone. I'm taking microbiology this summer, too. Along with anatomy and physiology. I get a short break for memorial day, so I'm going to the beach for vacation with my family then. I'll only really have class 3 days a week, so I won't be continuously stuck in a classroom all summer even though I'll be spending tons of time studying. With careful planning, you can still find time to do some things you want to do. One class doesn't have to take over your whole summer.

Make some new friends in micro -- probably are other pre-nursing students in the class.

This is a small price to pay for getting your life going. FWIW while in nursing school I had classes every summer. You get through it, you get on with life, and in a couple years you probably won't give it a second thought.

summer courses don't last the entire summer either so you'll still have time to relax tbh.

One of the things to think about is the fall the only time that your school accepts applications to the nursing program or do they have other times that they accept applications? If you don't take the class during the summer when would be the next time you could apply and start the program compared to when you could if you take the summer class? I can definitely understand wanting to take a break two years ago I decided to go back to school, I worked on doing my prerequisites while working full time to be able to apply for my nursing program. I just finished my first year of nursing school and will be taking the NCLEX for my LPN next week. As much as I would like to take the summer off from school and just work, I will be taking a math class that I need for getting into a BSN program when I am done with my associates program along with finding a nursing job and learning how to do the job. I could not take the math class this summer, however it would add another 6 months to a year before I could apply to the BSN bridge program I want to attend. Sometimes putting in the extra work now will help you in getting farther along in the future.

I could still appy for the spring but then I would have to until August 2017 to appl (then wait until the spring comes) instead this fall which extends my waiting period of a whole year 1/2 to get into the program. :/

Don't extend school just to get one summer off. You will regret it when the class you should be with is graduating and you still have a half a year to go. Most likely the summer class isn't the whole summer. Ours are 12 weeks but we have about 16 weeks off. Just take a vacation during one of those weeks.

Where are you going to school? Is this a retake?

Awww!! I know how you feel. But don't worry this too shall pass. Plan a nice vacation next summer!! :) Youre only 18, it's fine to want to relax during summer. Up until now that's what summer has been for ! Think of taking this course as confirmation that you're ready for nursing.. understand that you gaining something by seeing this through. Plus, if those friends are making fun of you, going on vacation w/ them might not be that great.. Do you have other friends you can doing something spectacular with when your course is done?

For a wait of 1 1/2 years, take the microbiology class now. Within that that wait time if you don't take the class this summer you never know what changes the school may make to their nursing program, admittance to the program could become more difficult, changes to the program such as what is required as a passing grade for the nursing classes could change (happened with my program, my cohort is the first to have the new higher requirement of an 81% to be considered passing). Along with that you never know what may happen in your personal life in that time which could make it more diffcult to complete school in the future. As hard as it may be to miss out on summer vacation now, think about what type of vacation you could afford to have once you are a nurse.
