Feeling a little down about taking a summer class

Published

I have a summer class this year for Microbiology and none of my closets friends does as they all plan on going on many vacations together while I will be left out of it. My best friend even made fun of me that I won't be able to enjoy my summer fully and I'm now having second thoughts on whether I should just go ahead with this 4 credit hour class or not.

Without this class I won't be able to apply to the nursing program this fall because they require that the majority of sciences need to be done at the time of application. But it is really taking me everything not to drop this class's on a moment to enjoy my summer. I legit am forcing myself to buy these expenses books early so I have no other choice but to not back out of this.

I know I sound like a spoiled brat and I don't mean to but I really wish I had some friends who were also taking summer classes so I wouldn't feel so left out.

So I guess I'm posting this to see if anyone else have gone through the same situation I'm feeling and can offer me words of encouragement to stick it out?

TL;DR: Need to take 4 credit summer course but I'm feeling left out since all my friends are planning on going on a vacation this summer. How can I stick this summer course out without dropping it?

I'm 18 but I promise you that I'm not spoiled at all and this will be my first time having school in the summer and I'm not used to it.

I finished LPN at 19, my "friends" some were not working, some were not in school. They spent their time/money at the mall or cruising in their cars on Friday/Sat nites. I was working as a nurse at the local hospital, worked 3-11 every Sat & Sun. I finished my RN/ADN at 21. LPN was 12 months including the summer, and ADN was another 12 months, plus taking pre-reqs for BSN. I understand how it feels to have to study when "friends are talking about boys/clothes/going to the movies. Stay focused, you have a goal to achieve.

I did go to my 20th & 25th high school reunions. By then I had served 3 years as a Navy nurse and was teaching nursing. People I did not think remembered me actually told me they had heard I became nurse straight out of high school & that felt really great.

Take the class so you can apply for nursing in the Fall. I took Micro over the Summer and did really well. You will be kicking yourself if you don't just get it done :)

I am taking 3 summer courses and I am not a happy camper. But I would much rather get these classes out of the way while I can. One summer of diligence won't hurt you. Maybe you'll meet more friends in your micro class. I met one of my very good nursing school friends during my prereqs.

I'm also working overtime and I've still managed to squeeze in a mini-vaca, plus several 2-day nearby city-extravaganzas. You'll definitely have time to add fun in.

Really? Lol if you're serious, you will take the class. Work hard now, play later

Sometimes, you just got to do what you got to do. I'm taking BOTH summer sessions at my school. Right after the first session, I start second session that very next week. My whole summer this year is dedicated to school. Yes, I'm a little bummed because I won't be able to have as much fun as I would like because of the classes I'm taking. (CNA and Anatomy) I won't be able to go on any summer vacations, but I believe school comes first. There are so many other summers where you can go places and travel, but for right now, you should focus on school and take Micro. What I keep telling myself is when I'm stuck at home studying while my friends are all out having fun is that it'll all be worth it in the long run. It will be. Do what you have to do to get into nursing school, you can always have fun later.

I'm a second degree student and have the benefit of hind sight. I'm also a mom and work full time while doing nursing pre req's - my opinion is that if I'm exhausted then I should take he summer off because my grades will suffer and I will come back better prepared for the fall. I'm studying for gen Chem final now and will do organic in fall - I would never recommend anyone to take chemistry in a shortened summer course - it's a lot of material. I don't know what subject you're taking in summer or how old you are but as you talk about having lots of friends in school I'm assuming you're still under 25 in which case I say there's no rush and enjoy your summer. I have a few 18 year olds in lab with me and they're super smart but they're taking 18 credits at once to try and rush to get to apply to nursing school and they're scoring B's or borderline A instead of the clear A they would have if they didn't overload and exhaust themselves, some of them aren't passing. Hare and the tortoise comes to mind. When you're that young there's really no need to rush in my opinion taking summer off is fine. I admire he determination though. The most important thing to keep in the back of your mind is how competitive nursing school admissions can be - where I'm applying for its very cheap so they simply go off the best GPA starting with sciences ... There's no credit given for how quickly you conplete the prerequisites, only for As.

Hey! I was once in your position a few summers ago, I actually took microbiology during summer. I was always taking summer classes anyways.. yes it's true that you'll be stuck in your room studying but it's not like summer is gone. You can hang out with friends after your done with microbiology. It's going to be fast paced compared to the regular semester long course so you really have to be on top of your game and focus. it's doable with motivation and a strong mindset you can do it. You're quite fortunate to have gotten a spot in micro. I know in my city the science courses were popular so I had to go to a different school to take micro due to no spots left at my usual school district. you got this :yeah:
