Update: I ended up calling HR this morning to tell them what happened, sent them the note. They’re going to send it to the house supervisor so they can take me off the schedule. Tried calling my manager but she’s on vacation till Monday, so not really sure what to do at this point but enjoy my days off I guess LOL

So earlier today I sliced my thumb with a knife while cooking, ended up needing 5 stitches. Called out tonight because of it. The PA that put the stitches says she’s doesn't want me to work the next 2 days because I need to keep my thumb dry, which means I won’t be able to wash my hands properly. She wrote up a note. Tonight was supposed to be my first night back and then work the next 2 nights, so there goes my entire work week. This is also my last week of orientation, I work on a med surg/tele unit. I feel awful about calling off for a cut finger, but the bleeding wouldn’t stop for over an hour so I just made the decision to go to urgent care. I told my preceptor and she said to take the days off and ask our manager if I can have my last week of preceptorship moved to next week instead. I just feel so bad! Missing an entire work week for a cut finger? I feel like my manager is going to be like “really??”. What would y’all do in this situation? Take the days off or go in and be extra cautious of my finger??

I ended up quitting during my orientation. It was just way too much responsibility for a new grad with no experience to handle. A little bummed but also relieved. I would have had support there from the LVNs and CNAs. They were all super nice to me and willing to help me out, but I still did not see myself doing this type of job. I guess time to start applying again!

Well, I didn’t make it past 3 days! I realized the supervisor role as a new grad was not the best fit for me. It was just so much. I got overwhelmed so quick. Staff is very nice and supportive and seemed willing to help, but to me it’s just not worth putting my license at risk if something were to happen. Not to mention JHACO can show up at any time this month since this is the survey window. They come every 3 months now due to covid. I couldn’t do it. Thought it’s best to leave now still during orientation than to be stuck. I’m definitely going to be taking ACLS classes. I just hope I can find a hospital job soon, one where I won’t have to oversee 100+ patients by myself! LOL.

On my shift right now and I’m already feeling so overwhelmed. The RN seems to have to do everything. I’m feeling very discouraged. I don’t want to continue here, but this is only my first day. I feel bad for wanting to leave because they already invested so much time orienting, doing all the paperwork. I’m not sure how to handle this

Hiii are you still there?! Super late I know LOL but I am going to SNF nursing as a new grad! They have me as RN supervisor and I am SCARED. Any advice/tips?! I honestly don’t know what I’m getting myself into

So I just got hired an a new grad RN at a SNF. At first I was really excited because this will be my first RN job! And maybe this is my fault, but I went in not knowing exactly what my role would be. During orientation, I found out I will be RN supervisor! This totally took me aback and immediately I felt very discouraged. RN supervisor? I have ZERO experience. Why would they hire a new grad for this position? Everyone I met was super nice, seems like they would be willing to help. I will be doing 7am-3pm shifts full time. They say I will have more help if I do morning shifts (originally I wanted nights) because the DON and assistant DON will be there. Today was just the paper work orientation, tomorrow I will be on the floor training. I believe they will give me 5-7 days training. I have no idea what to expect with this position. Now I am feeling very discouraged because I don’t know if I will be cut out to be an “RN Supervisor” as a new grad. Any new grads been in this situation? If so what was your role and how did you handle it? I know every facility is different. Tomorrow I will find out more of what my role will be, so we will see how this goes! Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi all, I feel like I need to vent a little bit and maybe get some advice from you guys. I'm currently in an LVN program 2nd semester, planning on bridging over to 3rd semester RN when I'm done. Right now we just started our med surg rotation. I've had 3 clinical days on the floor so far. One 12 hour shift and two 4 hour shifts. I feel like it's so overwhelming and fast paced for me. We have one patient where we do total care for them and are assigned a nurse to kind of follow and help them out. What I'm struggling with the most is looking at the big picture with my patient. It takes me so long to look at the chart because usually they have a long history, meds. I try to look at everything including their labs and try to figure out why some components are low or high and comparing it to their history or primary diagnosis to put 2 and 2 together. I also take a lot of time looking at their meds trying to figure out why they're taking it. I feel like I spend so much time on the computer that I miss out on what my nurse does. I want to know everything about my patient so I can give a good report to my instructor and also be able to give meds. We can't do that unless we tell our instructor all about the med and the key things about the patient. My instructor already chewed me out for missing some things on the chart about my last patient when I thought I looked at all of it and also for not knowing some things she asked me from 1st semester. She said it was unacceptable and I have some serious studying to do. I'm trying so hard not to fall behind. I feel like I'm forgetting the basics from 1st semester. Everything is just piling up with learning new things and trying to retain what I learned and applying it to clinical and I'm getting so overwhelmed that I'm questioning about becoming a nurse. My instructor is so strict on us and expects so much. I feel like I'm not meeting her expectations and I feel like I might get dropped for being unsafe or negligent. Is this a normal feeling? Because at this point I'm really questioning if nursing is for me. I can't imagine what it'd be like 3rd and 4th semester because I hear it only gets harder. At the same time I WANT to become a nurse. Whenever I do something for my patient to make them comfortable, it's SO gratifying and I feel amazing. But on the other hand I feel like I'm not smart enough to become one. Is this also a normal feeling?

I'm currently in LVN school, but I'm taking it at a community college where tuition is MUCH cheaper. I'm paying no more than $3000 for the whole program. Does your area offer it at a public community college? I think going through the LVN/LPN route is a great idea. It will be an easier transition to the RN program, plus you'll have had more clinical experience than the RN students!

There's a girl in my cohort whose 3rd language is English. She does have a very strong accent when she speaks and sometimes its really hard to understand her. She also writes how she speaks, so she does have poor English grammar, BUT this girl tries so hard. She always has the material down and scores well on tests. I think you'll do just fine :)

I took my prerequisites at Pasadena City College. The science classes are kind of hard to get into during the semester. I had to take anatomy in the summer and physiology in the winter session. I'm not sure if they offer weekend classes for them, at least in Pasadena.

You learn all about bacterial and viral infections. It's very interesting actually! But it is a tough class because there's so much information. Definitely comes up when you're in nursing school.
