Hey all!
I was just trying to get in touch with anyone hoping to start the RN program at FCCJ in the Spring 2009 semester. Hopefully we can see what the points seem to be at or where they were for the Fall 2008 semester.
Look forward to talking!:nuke:
I guess I'll understand more when it is explained at orientation. I'd LOVE to have Nassau! That is so close to home for me. Can you choose to do all of your clinicals at one place, or do you have to choose others. I wouldn't mind Baptist downtown, that's a straight shot, but I have NO clue where Shands is. LOLBTW... if any of you still need to get your skills kit... the directions didn't help me at ALL! I mapquested it and that didnt' help a lot either... I'll do my best to help you out here...
From I-95, exit at 8th street and go east on 8th. Find any "bigger" north/south street, take it to 11th st. go east on 11th. You will see a large overpass. Right next to the overpass is a VERY small, kind of run down building with a fence around the parking lot... there may be an ambulance in the parking lot. That is Stat-Line.
I know these aren't exact directions, but that's how I ended up finding them. I acutally ended up taking 8th all the way to Jaxport and finding 11th from there... don't do that! It takes forever! LOL Just find any north/south street when you get off 95 and take that over to 11th. That really is the easiest way.
I'm eager for orientation too! Shands was right there on 8th street. I'm guessing you went left after exiting the freeway. After exiting 95 turn right just passed the McDonald's and it will be on your left hand side. I've been to Shands quite a few times. I was told by a few nurses that Shands is a good hospital for clinicals because there is a lot to learn from there --- I know for a fact that there isn't ever a dull moment at that hospital (speaking from experience)
I have a question about the immunizations... On two of mine they came back equivocal -- my dr just gave me a booster for them... I need to do another series of blood work until it says positive, correct?? I just want to make sure. My dr. said I don't need to, but I don't want to risk losing my seat in the program because of that.
I would definitely check with FCCJ on that. I would read through the list of phone numbers, and call one of them and ask about that. I am not leaving anything to chance, either and I'm asking so many questions that my nurse is getting frustrated, but she understands where I'm coming from.
WoW!!! You guys make me misss alll of this. I'm telling all of you right now...this will be one of the hardest things you will do. I'm finishing up my first semester and am soooooo happppy to be getting done with term 1. When selecting a hospital..it alll depends on what # you get ( its a lottery). I am at Baptist DT this semester and it has been a really good experience. We just registered for classes today and I will be at Orange Park and Shands this next semester :) I'm soooo excited!!! lol Heres a bit of advice: Study hard, but not too hard. You need a life in the midst of this. The tests are difficult and you will probably fail your first one, but after that it only gets better :) There is a tonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn of pressure put on us and you will want to pull your hair out sometimes. Then again...there are days I LOVE this program. You learn alot and its a very exciting thing. Just get ready for the challenge of balancing it all. You will allllll do great, just stay positive:)
For classes:
Concepts- Read the book and do the objectives!!!!! The powerpoints were
really not helpful. (Very boring, but tests are tricky)
Pharm- Study lecture notes and the powerpoints.
Health Assessment- Read book ( Jarvis) and study powerpoints!! Know your Cranial Nerves..VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
Techniques- Watch the videos, read the book, study powerpoints, and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!! The simulations were stressful..but you will do great if you know what your doing!!
HESI- There is suppose to be a book in the library that is helpful..GET IT!!!
Med Term/ Drug calc/ IV Calc- KNOW THIS STUFF INSIDE AND OUT... It appears on most of your tests..hint hint (Start studying NOW!!!)
Good Luck and see you around!!!
You decide each term. And after the first term you no longer have a lottery, so it is whoever signs up for the class first within the time frame they give you to sign up.
Actually this has now changed...Among many things. Alllll Terms now do lottery. We just did ours today and we are going into term 2. If you get a bad # your kind of out of luck!! Just a heads up..things are constantly changing and nothing is ever certain with this program. Get READY!!
Yeah I saw that last week...I ended up getting a really good section and get to stay with my group of friends. They changed our schedule thirty minutes before we were suppose to do our lottery. Crazy people. I see you are going to Orange Park...I know some of the nurses there and can give you advice. and info on Bridges if you would like. Just PM me =)
Hello once again, everyone! I have yet to do my drug screening. I'm waiting to turn in all of my information before I do that since I live in Arlington.I got my uniforms yesterday.... Does everyones name tag read their full first name and Last initial?? My friend that is in the LPN prog at FCCJ said theirs is reverse of that. I'm just curious.
I don't know if anyone has answered this question for you yet but it's supposed to be with just your first name and last initial. I was told that it's so all the crazys can't come and find you after they get out of the hopsital. Which doesn't make any sense because you have a FCCJ name badge on too with your whole name. But you will get used to the confusion within the school. Good luck to all of you! I am going into second semester and my only advice is just keep moving forward, don't dwell on things you can't change. If you get a bad grade, chalk it up and do better next time. It's so hard to keep up but if you do a little bit at a time, you will be just fine. Oh and get a buddy! Someone who can help you study, do study guides and keep you up to date on what's due. Plus they will be your life line in keeping sane. No one outside of the nursing school will understand so vent all you can in school and with your nursing friends. We've all been there! So GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!
I have noticed several people on here say to start studying Drug calcs and dosages now... How are we supposed to do that? We haven't registered and don't know what classes we have, so we have no books. I'm getting stressed reading that I am supposed to self-teach before the semester even begins... :0/ Also, someone said to know cranial nerves well. Is there a review of that in one of the classes, or should I break out the A & P book for a refresher? Cuz I gotta say... that was 2 semesters ago (almost three now) and I don't remember those... I'm sure once I see them again, it will come back to me, but...
Health Assessment goes back over cranial nerves but they are on every test after you learn them. The drug calc and dosages are really not that bad after the first semester one. But the book is at the north campus bookstore. I would go there just to get the ISBN if you are not getting worksource and go to half.com. The reason they are telling you to start looking now is because once you are in, you are going to feel so overwhelmed and intimidated and your ability to concentrate on something so easy might make you freak out.
