Hello all! Just thought I'd start a thread for all of those folks that have submitted, or are getting ready to submit, their applications for FCCJ's Fall '08 term.
I will be submitting my application in a few weeks, when this Spring term ends. I have taken my NAT (twice), so I'm good to go there, but still need to get my CPR class done. I called several places & I'm waiting to hear back from them.
I look forward to chatting with & getting to know all of you, who will be doing the count-down with me... on getting our acceptance letters!!!
I know it helps to sound-board off each other & to lean on each other for support... especially with getting all the things done that we have to do!
Best of luck & success to all!!!
FloridaRNtoBe: You and your family especially your sister will be in my prayers!!! And don't feel helpless..think about it this way..you are going into a profession that could help you take care of your sister or anyone else in the future. I know its hard for you, but I'm sure she is sooo very proud. Keep going girl!! And if anything..Do it for her!! lotts of :heartbeat
Go to Baptist Nassau, I live here so it was an easy decision for me then but having been to all the other hospitals (except for a few) I can say with certainty that Baptist Nassau is an excellent facility for baby nurses. The patients are all stable, little old men and ladies with COPD and dementia. The nurse,as a general rule, are pleasant. The nurses at alot of the other facilities are burned out on student nurses.Someone asked about P. Gill-absolute fantastic instructor-she is dynamic and engaging and really knows her stuff. I just finished adult health 2 with her. There's also a new instructor, Joanie Boyd. SHe just (like, last week) resigned as a charge nurse at St. Vincent's. She's very personable, patient and knows her stuff too.
For the one who said her husband "left" her over the phone....I'm sorry to hear it. But if there is one bit of wisdom I can impart to all of you, it is this. There is a DIRECT correlation between the amount of stress and drama in your life and your test grades. The more drama, the worse your test grades will be. Beginning in 9 days, you will have tests on average every other week (except for Christmas break), and when the tests aren't there, the projects are. This schedule goes for 16 months, and in term 1, there are sometimes 2 tests every Monday.
Someone asked about moving around to different hospitals in term 1-No. You move to different hospitals by changing your clinical location each term. I've been to Baptist Nassau, Memorial, Baptist DT, Wolfson (all Peds clinicals are at Wolfson), Womens Pav at Baptist, now I'm at St. Vincent's. You will start your clinicals in about week 8 of the first semester. In the meantime, you'll have 2 simulation days, dress up in your tighty whiteys and play in the lab. The Term 1 clinicals are typically a grind-you'll be bathing patients, feeding patients, changing sheets and occassionaly you'll get an insulin/lovenox/heparin injection. I didn't get my first IV until about 4 weeks ago, got my first FOley in term 4.
Be prepared, we started with 96 students. Of those original 96, only about 72-75 will make it to next Monday's pinning ceremony. We lost 17 in Adult Health 1 alone. When they say 80 is passing with no rounding they mean it-of those 17 that didn't pass, I'd say 8-10 of them had a 79.5 or higher.
I'm not starting work until the new year. If any of you have questions or need help, let me know by PM. I'll do what I can to help.
Jenn
Thanks for all your info! I am currently working doubles every weekend. I have been debating on whether I should resign or just go PRN. I know the first term is pretty hectic. What do you recommend? I also have a 3 yr. old.
Ok guys. This will not be a pity party for me. I am 40 years old. I can handle anything that comes my way. I got in to this program with 226 points while dealing with three children, one of which is a 16 year old girl (can you say VALIUM) and one of which is homeschooled. My pain in the ... husband is not going to take this from me and honestly I don't think that is his intentions. It has been rough for a while but the funny thing is that after his call I thought to myself, better now than 2 weeks from now and realized the only thing I was ****** off about was the fact that this was interfering with chapter 13 in dosage calc! Which by the way is kinda hard. Anyway, now the tables have turned and he says he didn't mean it but I think I do. Like Jenn posted, no extra drama is needed and I am pushing this situation to the back of my life. Whatever happens, my only concern at this moment is pediatric dosages and body weight calculations and I will worry about this elephant "one bite at a time"! You guys are amazing and we are all going to have crap come up to distract us. More so because we will have alot on us so what normally wouldn't be a problem will seem like one. But real problems, divorces, kids, dealing with illness, being accepted to a clinical site, are challenges that we as "nurses", and I mean as nurses, because we have to tell ourselves that's what we are, can face and deal with! I love you guys (that's for you Brian) and all your girls! We are all amazing, fantastic people and since I am older than anyone else on here, you have to listen to your elders (haha)! We will laugh and pray and cry our way through to the end!!!!!!!!!!
FloridaRN2be- I am so sorry about your sister! I will keep her in my prayers and put her on my prayer chain at church. If it helps at all, my exhusband (not the soon to be, a different one) battled Hodgkins stage 4 and he is fine now. It took about a year too but that is one of the most curable forms so please keep that in mind. She can pull through this and will. Positive thoughts - positive outcomes! We are with you!

part time PRN thru term 1 and then you get get a more stable schedule in term 2. The amount of work in Term 1 is alot-people who work the weekend before tests struggled.
jlike :: you are amazing! i see i'm gonna love you! you are so positive no matter the situation. so help me by giving me some "good talk" on this $1,020 light bill that jea just sent me yesterday.
**yes i did say $1000-and some change** my bill is usually like $200-$275/mo. this is july's bill, august's bill, and a newly tacked on $400 deposit. crazy! they gave me payment arrangements...pay half now and pay the rest before august 27th...ha! right! after all this, i'm not even worried about school anymore...if i make it thru school in the dark then i was meant to be a nurse...just kidding :)...
my hubby started back lifting weights...he has gotten pretty sexy over these last few weeks. i'll just put him @ the strip club a night or two and we'll be good...lol
HAHAHAHAHAHA. You guys are so funny. =)
Julie, I hope everything turns out well for you. I'm a believer in the "everything happens for a reason" mentality, and this problem was probably brought up before our nursing school starts so that it wouldnt be a burden while you're in school. I know you'll persevere.
I'm probably the youngest one here, but I still face almost the same trials and tribulations that you all have been going through. I can't seem to stomach not having a life for 16 months. Haha. Jk.
On a bright note, I was at Bourbon Street last night and the DJ congratulated this girl that graduated as an FCCJ Nurse. It was random, but I thought to myself, "that could be me on December 7, 2009" (but of course as a dude. lol). Funny.
Any updates on the handbook?
You need the book! Until you can get it though, watch the vidoes in the information section of the tutor. It will just make a lot more sense to you with the book. However, I just completed all dosage calc, got a 100 on the practice exam and di it all in under 2 weeks so just get the book as soon as you can and then bust through it. The Ped. part was the only thing a little tricky but even that wasn't bad if you just focus. The rest was a piece of cake!

Okay...wow..I have no Idea where to begin.
Jlike/ Julie: (1) I am very sorry you are going through this, and of all times-right now. (2) I have never had to go through what you're going through, but one of my best friends just did..actually the exact same thing happened to her (call from him at work telling her he was leaving her). (3) I don't know you well yet, but from what I could tell from first meeting you: You are a WONDERFUL person. Very genuine and kind. (4) If you need anything let me know...all of us are going to be here for you during this. I will PM my # to you. Hope things get better for you!!!
I was the one who posted about the handbook. I got an e-mail respose from Miss Emily saying she would not be back into her office until Monday, but I have no idea when we get the handbooks. I hope we get something soon!!!
After reading some of the other posts about the passing rates and such makes me extremely nervous. I have a feeling we're going to be constantly fighting to keep our grades up in this program. I want this more than anything....so let me get my boxing gloves on..lol.
Well..ladies and Gents ( yes, Brian I said Gents)...I hope everyone has a good night!!
