Fall 2011 UT Houston Health Sciences hopefuls

Published

I am a ut houston hopeful applying for the pacesetter and traditional programs for fall 2011! I will be done with my pre-req's: engl 1302 and hist 1302 this spring 2011. I plan on taking the hesi the beginning of December since the deadline for ut-houston has been changed to Jan 15. 2011. I wish everybody good luck as were getting down to the wire!!1 Anyone else out there?

Does anyone have any w's on their transcripts? I have a few, and was hoping to be able to explain them during the interviews, which do not seem likely to take place... I wonder if a few Withdrawals that were more than 4 yrs old would disqualify me as an applicant...

I have 4 W's on my transcript evaluation from UT- 1 from last semester (Sociology) and 3 from 2001/2002. I don't think W's from a long time ago will matter too much as long as your recent coursework is solid.

Specializes in School Nursing.

Has something changed? One of UTH's biggest components was the interview and in person writing sample...

Have they changed their format for acceptance?

I have a ton of W's (plus a couple of Ds and Fs) during my first degree. Like at least 10, combined...I think a few more actually. All of this was during a specific difficult period, so I have good reasons for all that, but no interviews = no chance to explain myself :crying2:

@nurseguy86: I don't think having Ws will disqualify us per se, but I definitely share your concern about how it looks. So I'm reaaalllly hoping what rocket_surgery says is right...my recent coursework has been nearly straight As, 4.0 in science, high HESI score. Hope that makes up for it, but I really wanted that interview.

@Chaos0058, Rocket Surgery: I'm sure we are not the only ones with braille on our transcripts.. Anyhow, if I remember your GPA's correctly, your the last one's I expected to reply to my question. Not to sound condescending to anyone else.

Thanks for the reassurance rocket surgery, chaos0058. I hope y'all are right!

Good luck UTMB applicants! I hear they are supposed to spill the beans soon.

Chaos, how long ago was your first degree? Texas has an Academic Fresh Start program where you can have coursework completed more than 10 years ago omitted from your applications.

nurseguy86, I wasted a lot of time, money, and opportunities during my first degree, and I have the D's, F's, and W's to prove it! But since it was so long ago (1997-2001), I was able to apply under the Fresh Start program so those old grades wouldn't be included in my nursing school applications. That being said, when I started my nursing prerequisites a year ago, I busted my you-know-what to make sure I'd get all A's. I just hope it will be good enough to get accepted... it sounds like there are a lot of highly-qualified people posting on this board, and I'm sure there are tons more out there we don't know about... Every year it gets more competitive, so I'm just keeping my fingers and toes crossed that I get picked.

@rocket_surgery: Thanks for the info about Fresh Start! That is really good to know! I was at UT 2003-2008, so not eligible---but I do enjoy the idea of getting to purge all that crap ;) so maybe when I go back for grad school. Like you, I wasted so much time, money, opportunities etc! But that's a big part of why I'm so excited about nursing; not only is it a new career, but academically it's a new beginning!

Thanks back at you both for the reassurance! I only had a couple of Ds and Fs, so my grades are decent (managed to graduate with 3.1), but my biggest issue is the Ws. Almost all the withdrawals were during 2007, so hopefully at a glance they'll notice that it was a specific period. And if not---I did write a solid essay explaining everything for UTMB. :D

@nurseguy86: did you apply to UTMB?? i applied there, too. i'm not quite sure how UTMB is compared to houston though.

@asian: I didn't apply to UTMB. All hopes are in UT-H.. UTMB seems like a great school too. After all, it is a part of the UThealth system. Hindsight tells me I should have applied more places, but UT-H was the goal I was chasing when I started the Prereqs last year(top 5% of nursing schools..also plan on going back to school once I find my specialty in nursing, and UT-H has some of the best, and least expensive grad programs too!). Also, I have a 2yr old son and I wouldn't want to be separated from him by a body of water on a daily basis.

So now that there are no interviews, we are left to the mercy of the numbers game. There are around 80 slots to fill for the Fall 2011 semester and because of UT's affirmative action those 80 slots would be divided by the percentages of the state's racial categories. Has anyone even considered your chances now that you know since 2006 UT has been practicing the taboo subject of affirmative action?

I think you misunderstand UT's affirmative action policy. There are no racial quotas to fill. http://jurist.org/paperchase/2011/01/us-appeals-court-upholds-university-of-texas-affirmative-action-policy.php

Based on your posts from the Spring 2011 thread, it sounds like you applied but didn't get an interview. Are you blaming affirmative action for that?
