Fall 2011 UT Houston Health Sciences hopefuls

Published

I am a ut houston hopeful applying for the pacesetter and traditional programs for fall 2011! I will be done with my pre-req's: engl 1302 and hist 1302 this spring 2011. I plan on taking the hesi the beginning of December since the deadline for ut-houston has been changed to Jan 15. 2011. I wish everybody good luck as were getting down to the wire!!1 Anyone else out there?

Okay and Thank you so much as far as AP it is so much information to go over. Was it more of AP1 or 2

It touched everything that I had covered in AP, so please review both your API and APII notes. It may seem like alot, but it really isn't. As long as you have a general understanding of all the important topics of A&P, there's no reason to worry. Rehash your memory and afterwards, you'll see that it wasn't bad afterall.

I had only taken AP I when I took the HESI and I got an 86 on the Anatomy Section..which isn't really that great of a score but I thought I was doing a lot worse when I was taking it, and that was my lowest score on the exam. I think it was taken from both AP I and II, not necessarily more than the other. I used the HESI exam review from the UT SON Houston bookstore and tried to memorize the whole section regarding that. It gets pretty detailed about the different hormones and bones/muscle/tissue. I would just try and study the guide as much as you can and any other notes that you have. As for the rest of the test its pretty easy, I would just make sure you knew the conversions from the guide in the math section and I would review the vocabulary terms they have in the study guide.

Okay and Thank you so much

Your welcome, good luck!!

Thank you so much, I will do that... I have been studying the Hesi study guide, but I hear some people say that it isnt a very good study guide..

of course it's okay that you emailed me, stayfocus. :) here are my thoughts...sorry for the long post, everyone:

my biggest piece of advice is to relax. it's a general knowledge test, so if you've taken courses in these subjects, you know enough to do well! it's just a question of being able to stay calm and access the information you know.

i agree with all the advice the other posters gave. a&p can definitely feel like a lot to memorize, so while it's good to look over your detailed a&p notes, try not to get too bogged down in details or you will feel completely overwhelmed. you do want to know the essentials of structure/function, but the thing about science testing in general is you can't predict exactly what questions they're going to ask or what parts they'll focus on, so knowing concepts and processes will help a lot (can apply to multiple questions...whereas details will probably only be useful for that one question). also, a lot of these tests are about reasoning; if you just don't know the answer, you can often eliminate a couple choices using logic. i definitely used that tactic on teas, but it might help with hesi too. this can apply to some of the math/language questions too.

i didn't do any studying specifically for hesi, but did some for teas (took it the day before hesi, yuck). so i've never seen the evolve guide, but i definitely recommend taking an entire practice test from somewhere, before studying anything. it'll show you what you need to work on (and your strengths) so you can focus on areas of need--and also feel good about your strong subjects. :) there are lots of books out there that aren't specifically for hesi, but can prepare you for any of these exams...kaplan, barron, mcgraw-hill etc all have "nursing school entrance exams" books, which you can use for study guide and practice questions. be careful with this though---some of these books have much harder math questions than hesi, for example. so it is good that you have an evolve guide on hand, so you can compare level of difficulty and not freak yourself out with really hard questions from the books. ;)

finally, for hesi you get to do the sections in whatever order you want. start with a couple of sections that you're really good at---it'll really give you a confidence boost and hopefully make you feel more relaxed. j anyway, hope this all made sense---i have a tendency to ramble. :D good luck!

@ mac031: i called admissions this morning and they said they are doing interviews. i talked to this lady named joann (spelling?) and she told me about this. i dont know either why admissions is giving everyone a different answer. she also told me that admissions decisions will be out by april 15th. so at least we know when the latest is for expecting our admissions decisions!

has anyone NOT received a transcript evaluation? I had my address updated with the school a few weeks ago, so I am just nervous about them sending things to the wrong address. So it would make me feel better if other people havent gotten one either

Thank you so much for all the advice, it was

Very helpful.. A big THANKS to all you guys

"Internet hug".... LOL!

Okay---my GPAs have finally been corrected :) They're a little lower than the original: they used different courses to satisfy a couple of prereqs (for example, for Perf Arts they didn't use a performance class in which I made an A, because it was classified as an Educational Psychology course...they used a different course which was a B). Plus a couple other changes.

So here's where I finally stand: nursing 3.555, science 4.0, overall 3.155. I'm hoping having a high science GPA and HESI will balance out the low overall.

Congrats Chaos! Glad everything worked out for you!

I wouldn't worry too much about the grades- you're WELL over the minimums so you're obviously very qualified. I have no doubt you'll have an interview letter in your hands pretty soon! :D
