Fall 2010 Lonestar ADN Hopefuls

Published

Hey everybody! I just wanted to start a thread where all of us who are beginning the stressful process of worrying over Lonestar admissions can give each other some support!:yeah: I'm planning on applying to LSC-Montgomery - retaking Psych 2301 in a Second 8 Weeks class to get an*A,* and getting ready to take the HESI in November when Moco's testing opens. I'm freaking out over how much is on the line...must make an *A!* Must blow HESI out of the water!!!!!

Anyway, just wanted to say good luck to everyone as their finishing up their prereqs and preparing for the HESI and ask...

LoneStar hopefuls...WHERE YOU AT?!! :heartbeat

I remember hearing that if you don't have insurance you can get it through lone star. I've never checked it out myself, but they should have some information on the website. A friend of mine went to nursing school in Dallas and she got insurance through her school. I'm not sure how much it was, but I remember she said it was not expensive compared to getting it on your own.

I just wanted to remind everyone to get your hep b shot. I got my first one today. I get another one next month and the final one SEPT 9! That's after school starts! I'm on pins and needles waiting for my doctor's office to call back to see if the last one can be pushed up two weeks. I know there's a fast track hep b series so I'll guess I'll ask about that if they won't. In my mind I was thinking I would be done at the beginning of August, not Sept. :uhoh3:

Yeah, thats a good reminder. Get your shots straighten out. I Finished my hep shots about 4 months ago. I should be good with everything else also. Well except the N1H1 shot. I guess I'll have to swing by the RN office and ask about their insurance thing.

Whew! My doctor's office said I could have my last shot up to two months before Sept 9. Thank goodness!!!:)

Thangbom- They do have insurance through the school. I have no idea how much it costs, just remember that it was brought up at one of the info sessions. Since it's a requirement and they likely have many students sign up, I would imagine it's less expensive than getting your own plan.

Heathers- Good reminder! Just to add to it, now may be a good idea to start searching for childhood shot records. Mine are all over the place, all I have is my mom's records with no doctor signature, so I went ahead and had titers drawn already when I started my Hep B series. Did anyone else's doc recommend the Hep A, too? Mine said he's expecting that one to be required as well, any day now. It's a two shot series, and they have combo shots with hep B, so you're first is a combo, second is only Hep B, third is combo. I'm down to just the last combo and TB test left...nothing like being a human pin cushion.

cschoppe- Thanks so much for your support and the heads up about the uniform! Is it going to be an actual uniform or black scrubs? I'm praying for scrubs, every nursing student uniform that I've seen is hideous! And as far as shoes go, how picky are they? I've seen where some people can't wear Nurse Mates because of the little blue heart.

How are you liking the program so far, aside from how intense it is? Does there seem to be a good amount of support from the instructors? I know I have more questions for you, but I seem to be blanking out at the moment. I hope your semester goes well, even if it is crazy!:)

Our uniforms are black scrubs from the Landau company. I'm not sure if they are very picky about white shoes but from what I gather about things so far is that they will be picky on this issue. I know that the white shoes have to have a back on them and no logos. We start Med Surg I this summer and thats when we have off-site clinicals so we haven't actually worn scrubs yet.

I like the program so far. It's a different world though than any other college education I've ever been through. I already have my BA (I was a kindergarten teacher for 2 yrs) and so far nursing school has been really different. Prepared to do 100+ pgs of reading a day, and if you're prone to feeling nervous performing in front of other ppl, try to get over it. Remember that the first semester or so of nursing school is all about the profs trying to weed out the weak ones, so just put up with the crap and show up the next day. They're really not 'that' bad... just intimidating but some are very helpful. I suggest buying a NCLEX study guide and start reading now.

About the hep B shots... I just finished my 3rd last week and I've been in the program since Jan. All of the series needs to be completed prior to first contact with a live patient (which for us is not until June 7) so I was ok. Don't worry about it, just get it done ASAP. CPR class needs to be done prior to orientation and needs to be of the BLS for healthcare providers type.

Hmm... that's all I can think of for now.

So, am I totally wierd that I plan on celebrating and possibly even doing a full on, full out happy dance,:lol2: when and if my letter comes in... I can't wait until April 10th. It seems like forever when I think back to '07 when I started all this. I hope the job market holds up for when we get out. People keep telling me I should combine my future nursing degree with IT, since it's less hard work. But I like the days that you are running from the time you come in to the time you go home. Maybe I'm just wierd but when you are in the right place at the right time and are able to help people in that worst moment it's a much better feeling then when you go plug the laptop in for the executive, who is too computer illiterate to understand that when you kick the plug on your laptop the screen dimmed because it went into powersave mode. To me it just doesn't have the same worthiness. Good luck to all who applied. I'm hoping to end up at North Harris but I will take what I can get. I'm just curious why did you guys pick nursing ?

I'm hoping the economy will turn around by the time we graduate, too. I've noticed a lot of hospital jobs have opened up recently. I don't know if that means they are actually going to hire people to fill them or they are collecting resumes just in case. My mom works for a large hospital chain on the business end and she said the hospitals weren't really hurting, but put hiring freezes (all positions except nurses) and didn't give out raises and bonuses as a precaution. This year they've been hiring, giving out bonuses, pay raises, etc., so hopefully that means we've turned a corner. Of course, she doesn't get the whole "we don't hire new grads thing" so I don't think she really understands the nursing end, just the business end.

My dh is one of those that can't (or won't) take a minute to find out what's wrong with his computer, lol. He just throws up his hands and calls someone. A friend of mine's dh is in the IT field and he used to complain about the same phone calls. He just writes programs now for his company. It doesn't sound too exciting :zzzzz.

I'm applying at Montgomery, which I know is the most competitive. I live minutes from the school so I hope I get in there. I wish we had solid black scrubs! I would just like to have at least have the top and bottom match.

hello. i was looking at purchasing a stethoscope. i was looking at buying a littmann master classic ii (27 inch) that was in ceil blue. do you think this will be acceptable?

also, what are the requirements regarding shoes? any brands or particular shoes recommended and required?

cschoppe- Thanks for the tips. I expect them to do some 'weeding out', and I expect to be on overload from day one, so hopefully being somewhat mentally prepared will help. I do plan on getting an NCLEX study guide (any recommendations?), and I've already been lurking on threads on here to get an idea of the style. My micro teacher does use a lot of application and 'choose all that apply' type questions, and people are complaining about them. It occurred to me that they are a step closer to what we'll be seeing in NS, so I'm trying to see it as an advantage, albeit a small one.

EmBeMap- Do you mean this dance?:dancgrp:

I totally stole that from another thread, but it looks about right to me, though I'm not nearly that coordinated anymore.

I'm with you on wanting a more worthy job. I've been in the restaurant/bar industry for the last 12 years, and I'm so over it. I'm sick of complaining people, rude people, drunk people, etc. I know I'll see those in nursing, but hopefully I can at least make a difference to a few, and on top of that, I get to use my brain. I mean, getting someone's order right has nothing on helping someone get better, or even allowing them some dignity as they go. What I do like though, is when a shift is 'go, go, go' the whole time. I can't stand slow shifts where I do nothing but stand around.

Heathers- That's good news! But I am still concerned about the 'new grad' thing too. I'd really like to do an internship, so I'm really worried about them starting to eliminate ADN grads from those. I'm hoping that a few still will accept them, and I'm going to try my best to keep my GPA up too. I know everyone says to accept that grades will be lower in NS, but I'm still going to aim to keep them higher.

Kathrine- I have no idea about the stethoscope either, but as far as shoes, I've found that Landau and Cherokee both have a couple of options with closed backs and no logos (or at least white logos). I think I'll wait until orientation to get any of that stuff, but I can't stop myself from 'researching'.

So, I went back and read the spring application thread and they got their letters a month after the application period closed. Of course that could be because there were only two schools accepting for the spring, but I've still decided that I'll start checking the mail come April 1st (my husband usually checks it). I know I'll probably just make myself crazier, but I'm already going nuts, so what's a little bit more, right? :lol2: Sadly, I'm looking forward to spring break, not for the break but because I expect it to fly by and that means one more week down.

i can't wait for this month to fly by. am filing taxes asap to then put in my fafsa. as to stethoscope, i got dibs on my doc friends hand me down [color=#8b1a1a]3m littmann® master cardiology stethoscope, because he is finishing his residency. i was thinking of splurging on one of the electronic ones with the ambient noise cancellation, but that' s just my inner geek, talking it probably would survive ns. hey is anyone thinking of doing the summer program that qualifies you to sit for the lvn boards but taking the rn classes plus the summer extras. i was thinking for the experience and the chance to make a little money if i passed the boards, since it only requires you go during the summer as well. i heard they do a lot of skills practice during these classes.

hello everyone. good luck to those of you waiting. i am going to apply for lone star kingwood for spring 2011. i was looking at the online imformation session on the north harris campus website and it states that up to 4 hours will be counted towards your point if they are in progress or outstanding. i want to know if that is really how it works and if it goes for all campuses or just noth harris.

i also noticed some of ya'll are worried about getting jobs after graduation. most hospitals dont hire new students (BSN or ADN) most hospitals will have nursing internship programs that take graduate nurses that have have no rn experience. i know for sure that hermann and st luke accepts ADNs into their program. they really just look at your gpa from school.
