Failed a 2nd time and am ready to move on with the rest of my life...

Nursing Students NCLEX

Hello, everyone!

I'm new here and am really needing some help.

I just found out yesterday that I failed the NCLEX for the second time. My wife, bless her heart, is taking it a lot harder than I am. A LOT harder.

The first time that I took the NCLEX all I really did to prepare was to take the Hurst review and study it up until I took my test. Took all 265 questions and failed. The paperwork in the mail said that I was "Near the passing standard" in all categories...that I was on the verge of actually passing the test. At least, that's how it made me feel.

For the first test, I didn't study any NCLEX review questions except the ones that came with the Hurst review. For my second test, ALL I did was NCLEX review questions, primarily ones from the online NCLEX 3500 and from the Saunders 4th edition. I studied over 1500 questions in preparation for my 2nd NCLEX test and when I sat down at the terminal to take it a 2nd time, it felt like I hadn't studied at all.

Instead of 265 questions, it cut off at 227. I was abit excited and nervous at the same time. I mean, it cut off earlier that it did last time! Surely this is a good thing!

Apparently not.

Found out at 8am, October 18th, that I had failed again and I think that this time, I'll have to wait 90 days before I can take it again, so it'll be 2009 before I can test. I'll call the nursing board on Monday to see if that's the case.

I want to pass it the next time I take it.

So any ideas? Suggestions? I'm considering doing Suzanne's plan and I may get a review book about prioritizing since I had a ton of those questions on both tests.

I'm still going to study the Saunders book since I never finished doing all of it. I started doing Suzanne's plan, but didn't have enough time to finish the first book portion of it.

I'd love to hear any thoughts that you have and thanks for listening!

I too failed two times and felt like quitting. After feeling sorry for myself I decided to gear up and try Suzanne's plan. I am almost done with part 1 and am praying to God that I pass next time. I too tried Kaplan for my first and second attempt.

I never used the Kaplan book. Do you feel that it wasn't helpful for you?

Have you tried the NCSBN review course? I plan to try that myself. I'm also going to use Suzanne's plan to help me.

hi guys how do you get Suzanne's plan?

l am a foreign trained nurse. l took the nclex on the 2nd of sept and failed. i used the saunders book and l think the questions are took easy. you can use it but l think you should learn how to priortize first. check out this website called nursereview.org. practice the questions, they are similar to kaplan q trainers. l started Kaplan last week and l think thier questions are similar to Nclex. You must completely follow Kaplan rules and that should help you. I intend doing Nclex again in december. l also noticed that some of the actual nclex question was from this book called Prioritization, delegation and assignment by Linda A. Lacharity. l saw exact questions and l means up to 20 question that a got in my nclex exam. l purchased the book by mistake 4 days after failing Nclex.

Life is funny, isn't.

Good luck.

Hello Metabaronx,

I know where you are coming from. Why do you think you have to wait 90 days? I know if you have too many sources you can overwhelm yourself and you are not thinking clearly. Take some time for yourself to kick back for a few days and then you must get back up and start preparing again. The plan that you are considering is a great idea, read the stickies about what others have to say. Just remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE and this has no impact of the kind of RN you will be. It's just finding a study plan that works for you. With the holidays approaching you do not want to rush your studies, you want to be committed, determined, motivated and you will get there. GOOD LUCK!:)

Hi Dont give up. I took the exam 3 times and found out today that I passed. I was ready to give up. The first exam I used KAPLAN. I also used Kaplan for the 2 nd exam. I guess it just was not for me. I then read through the Saunders book. The best thing I did was I did an on line review through the NCSBN. It was great. They are also the ones who write the questions for the nclex. I did a 3 week review and it was 50 dollars. The best 50 bucks I ever spent. The questions were so similar to the exam itself. When I took the exam I felt like I knew 90 % of the answers. I am so happy today that I dont know what to do with myself and you will feel that way too. I know exactly how you are feeling now but dont give up. Good luck to you

Hello aVoMeJet,

Here's the website for the NCSBN http://www.ncsbn.org. You can sign up for 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 8 weeks, etc. depending on how long you think you will need it. Take a look. Click on the Products tab and then learning ext. once you pay you are able to access it. Take a look at Suzanne's Plan also it's FREE! Here it is 07/08 revision of Suzanne's First Tip. Click on the student's tab scroll down until you see NCLEX Discussion click on this and the stickies are located there. Check out your options and make sure you don't get too many sources because it just overwhelms you. GOOD LUCK!:redpinkhe

Remember that NCLEX questions are unique. It's easy to read too much into them or to make common sense assumptions that aren't part of the question or to consider real world practicalities that don't figure into the question.

Study and practice how to take the NCLEX as opposed to studying just content and for comprehension. I could often come up with rationales for several of the "not best" answers as well as reasons why the "best" answer doesn't seem to be. But that doesn't help you pass the test. Reading the rationales might even confuse you because sometimes the "best" answer might have more to do with the exact wording of the question as opposed to understanding the rationale for a particular action. A rough example might be noticing if the question asks "what would you DO?" as opposed to "what would you ASSESS?" My example may not be right on, but a good study guide or review program will point out some of the tricks to deciphering NCLEX questions and answers.

I know how u feel I have taken the NCLEX-PN twice I was the first time near the passing stardard. Then I went back for the second time and near the passing standard. I was through the roof crying my eyeballs out I was ***** up for a month just to tell someone that I didnt pass crushed my heart. I also study from Saundra. So I go back in December to do it again an I made it my business to come out saying that I passed. I heard that Mosby is a good book for RNs read the book stop doing the questions cause I found myself trying to memorize the question read cause we are missing something so that what Im doing read at least 4 time over and over put the computer down good luck Tresey in Michigan

Do not dout yourself my friend ! I failed three times and spent thousands for all kind of materials. Take this review class: www.nclex-tutorial.com . They actually care for their clients and put them in the right direction. Once I took this class I saw it was all wrong how I prepared and I made it after another four weeks preping. Good Luck ! No way you won't pass !

Don't give up....Once u failed using the Hurst review they will give u a remedial packet which helps a lot and also they will give access to all the videos we had in class which u can download onto ur Ipod. and just go over and over it until u get..if u download them u can listen to them in ur car and everything...Please don't give up we need good nurses out here...just because u failed doesn't mean that u won't be a good nurse...and tell ur wife to hang in there because in the end sign-on bonus will pay off:twocents:
