Failed a 2nd time and am ready to move on with the rest of my life...

Published

Hello, everyone!

I'm new here and am really needing some help.

I just found out yesterday that I failed the NCLEX for the second time. My wife, bless her heart, is taking it a lot harder than I am. A LOT harder.

The first time that I took the NCLEX all I really did to prepare was to take the Hurst review and study it up until I took my test. Took all 265 questions and failed. The paperwork in the mail said that I was "Near the passing standard" in all categories...that I was on the verge of actually passing the test. At least, that's how it made me feel.

For the first test, I didn't study any NCLEX review questions except the ones that came with the Hurst review. For my second test, ALL I did was NCLEX review questions, primarily ones from the online NCLEX 3500 and from the Saunders 4th edition. I studied over 1500 questions in preparation for my 2nd NCLEX test and when I sat down at the terminal to take it a 2nd time, it felt like I hadn't studied at all.

Instead of 265 questions, it cut off at 227. I was abit excited and nervous at the same time. I mean, it cut off earlier that it did last time! Surely this is a good thing!

Apparently not.

Found out at 8am, October 18th, that I had failed again and I think that this time, I'll have to wait 90 days before I can take it again, so it'll be 2009 before I can test. I'll call the nursing board on Monday to see if that's the case.

I want to pass it the next time I take it.

So any ideas? Suggestions? I'm considering doing Suzanne's plan and I may get a review book about prioritizing since I had a ton of those questions on both tests.

I'm still going to study the Saunders book since I never finished doing all of it. I started doing Suzanne's plan, but didn't have enough time to finish the first book portion of it.

I'd love to hear any thoughts that you have and thanks for listening!

Hey Meta,

Hello scubadooII,

Count yourself very lucky that you found this plan before you invested in many plans that pretty much take your money!:)

Yeah I know :) I got my money back from Kaplan last week :)

I actually had every intention to do Kaplan & Suzanne's plan last time, but got lazy :( So, I suppose, I got what I deserved :( Thats ok , in the long run, I'll be a better nurse for it ;)

Hello scubadooII,

Sometimes it's just all about learning what will work for yourself. That's great you have got your money back. You have to forget the past and move forward and you're right you'll be a great nurse for this.:)

I too failed two times and felt like quitting. After feeling sorry for myself I decided to gear up and try Suzanne's plan. I am almost done with part 1 and am praying to God that I pass next time. I too tried Kaplan for my first and second attempt.

I too failed two times but Im so determine to pass NCLEX. I can't quit now. Im gonna try the suzanne's plan this time around. I tried the learning extension course. It helped me on the exam but I guess it wasn't enough to pass. Good luck to you.

I used Kaplan and failed 2 times. I passes when I took the 3 week review from NCSBN. I loved it. The practice questions were almost identical to the exam. If you have 50 bucks I would say go for it. I wish you the best.:wink2:

Hello Metabaronx,

I know where you are coming from. Why do you think you have to wait 90 days? I know if you have too many sources you can overwhelm yourself and you are not thinking clearly. Take some time for yourself to kick back for a few days and then you must get back up and start preparing again. The plan that you are considering is a great idea, read the stickies about what others have to say. Just remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE and this has no impact of the kind of RN you will be. It's just finding a study plan that works for you. With the holidays approaching you do not want to rush your studies, you want to be committed, determined, motivated and you will get there. GOOD LUCK!:)

Debbie

Debbie,

Actually, I found out that it's just 45 days, but I may give myself some more time to study for it.

I'm seriously considering the Kaplan review right now. I work with a guy that did the Hurst review for his first NCLEX, failed after 130 questions, then took the Kaplan review and passed after 75 questions.

He was telling me about the differences that he had with each review and how the Kaplan was the one that prepared him much better for the NCLEX.

I also have someone that may be willing to pay for it and I need to check out their guarantee/refund policy in the meantime.

Hey Metabaronx,

I don't want to tell you how to review or what review to take but have you checked out what others have to say about Suzanne's Plan? Check out your options first before you decide. What works for some people may not work for others. Go under the student tab to NCLEX Discussion and that's where you can find out what others have to say.

Here's her thread 07/08 revision of Suzanne's First Tip.:)

Debbie,

Yeah, I've seen that and may still do it, but I really feel that I do best with hands on training.

I'll spend some more time considering my options, but I really feel that I may need another review because of the time that I've been out of school. I just hope that I'm not forgetting anything!

Of course, the NCLEX makes you feel that you didn't learn anything in the first place! ;)

Hands on? Kaplan certainly is not hands on. The class sessions are 75 questions.

IMHO if you've been out of school for awhile, Suzanne's plan is the way to go. I got my money back from Kaplan by finishing all the qbanks, and attending classes which were in my opinion a waste of time.
