Failed, nclex rn 5 times! Help?!?!

Published

EVERYONE I need all the advice, suggestion, and help as much as possible! So I am completely bum-out and am starting to feel maybe I'm just not meant for a RN (as I am told by some people). I have just taken the NCLEX-RN and it's been more than 24 hours and am pretty confident that I FAILED it. I am trying to gather all my strength but it is so tough to get all that courage again. Starting to feel really discouraged! Has anyone taken their NCLEX-RN recently that FAILED 5 TIMES LIKE ME? Or, am I the only one?! I will tell you that I have taken the NCSBN 15 week course (didn't exactly finish all the practice questions), but reviewed all the contents in there as well as questions in both the Saunder and Lipprocotts booklet that relate to those contents reviewed both right and wrong rationales and even jotted down notes to review before the exam. With a part-time job, mother, and wife I put about 3 months into this whole reviewing/studying contents etc. to make sure I went in with confident to pass this exam but in the end, I still didn't. I feel like I'm running out of choices here. The exam I took had about 3 SATA, no math, 2-3 really long paragraph (about 3-4 sentences long, which I thought I was in the passing level, perhaps?) and the rest was just about 1-2 sentence long. I didn't even make it pass 75 questions. That's terrible!!!! For those that have passed the nclex rn did you rec'd a lot of questions in paragraph form like 3-4 sentences long? Or perhaps 2-3? I'm sure 1-2 was just below or near the passing level. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE... I need the help all I can get what I can do differently, review differently etc. Anything will be GREATLY appreciated! Sounds really desperate but I am determine to pass this next time and if I don't I have no idea how to move on...

This is not true! I didn't need a Tudor and I passed! Is it cause you needed a Tudor? This is a bit condescending, don't you think?!

Just envisioned Henry the VIII (of the House of Tudor) being a tutor and had a giggle :)

ETA: I then kept reading the rest of the posts after this quoted one, and I see it's already been enjoyed, LOL....personally, I've gotten along just fine without ever ONCE having a Tudor, but maybe it's more common than I think! :cheeky:

^^^ Maybe she meant a Tudor style home? Perhaps some people study for NCLEX better in that type of architecture...... :p

I apologize in advance, but no nurse ever requires a tudor.....:woot: I really couldn't resist

What do 16th century English monarchs have to do with any of this? :p

Dang! Just saw this....here I thought I was sooooooo clever :(

I completely understand how you feel not passing NCLEX, I myself failed it 2 times and pass NCLEX on my third try (just found out this pass Friday I pass). I was discourage after the second time I didn't pass, but I told myself I wouldn't let myself down, because if I could get through nursing school, this is just one more hump for me to overcome. ALWAYS THINK POSITIVE. Here is my story to passing the NCLEX, and I'm hoping it will help you as well.

I took a week off to analyze what I was doing wrong and figure out what I needed to do in order to pass this third time (keep in mind I have been out of school for 4 months). My school required for us to do Kaplan in order for our transcript to be release, however the lady that was teaching my class was an awful instructor and I did not learn anything. The hospital that I will be working for also offer a Kaplan Review course as well, but I decline to retake the course because I assume it would be the same outcome (I was wrong). Fast forward I failed NCLEX twice, and everyone at work kept asking me if I did Kaplan at work, and of course I told them my story. One of my coworker told me her instructor will be teaching the course at the hospital and she is very good, and from what my coworker has heard almost everyone who attend the review course taught by her has pass with flying colors. I then decided to retake the Kaplan review course at work (free to retake if you already paid for it), and I can definitely say this time around it was a total turnaround from my first instructor. I learned so much and I gain the knowledge on how to ATTACK the questions, which was my biggest issue. I truly recommend taking a LIVE Kaplan review course if you can, because they will help you until you pass, you just need to ask for help. Something I learned from my second Kaplan instructor are, remove all the negative people from your life, make study priority, and repetition is key.

The second step I did was asked some of my coworker for help and advice on studying tool. Many ask if I have the Hurst book by Aunt Marlene, and I didn't, but one of my coworker was nice enough to let me borrow her (I was broke and couldn't afford to buy this 40 dollars textbook). I read every single inch of this 500 page textbook. Chapter 13 of the book has all the charts that Aunt Marlene said would be helpful to know for the NCLEX, and let me tell you I looked over that 100 page chapter every single day for two week before I tested.Pharmacology was also a weak point for me and Aunt Marlene laid out pharmacology where I could actually comprehend. I highly recommend the book Hurst by Aunt Marlene

The third step I took was I did 75 practice questions a day with remediation (took about 3 hours).Other recommends to do 100 questions a day, but I find 100 questions was too much for me, do what comfortable to you. My goal was to score at least 65 percent on my practice test. During my remediation I would look at both my right and wrong answers, and write down what I didn't know from reading the rationale. I would then go over my note to ensure myself I knew the content.

My day consisted of reviewing chapters 13 from Hurst (2 hours), my notes (1 hour), and doing 75 questions with remediation (3 hours). In total I spent 6 hours a day studying, and I can say it was all worth it.

Sorry for the long post, but if you have additional questions you can email me. Remember, remove all the negative people from your life, make study priority, and repetition is key. Good Luck!

Where did you study your questions from?

I mostly use Kaplan and find that it is the best practice tool to use since it is very similar to NCLEX styles. I did some questions from the hurst book but I did not like it, because it gave me the answer right below the question

Stacy no matter how much you failed; at the end of the path you will pass!! I failed few times I am preparing to take the board after vacation.

I feel my mind is clear and ready to start again.. I am taking refresh course (Hurst) using Saunders for my weak areas; there's new program called uworld is amazing! They have good questions with good rationals.. do not take no more expensive courses. You can use Saunders strategy book from library or any places sales the book... take everything step by step. Create a calendar for yourself.. English is my third language I passed nursing school while working two jobs! I can still pass the board while I am working in health care. Nothing to be ashamed I work with doctors who passed their medical board in 5th or 6th tries and their great amazing successful doctors!!

Good luck & stay positive please!

Given these statistics...

.... you might want to consider hiring a live tutor, or enrolling in a reputable review class/course. Without changing how you are approaching the test, your chances of success are actually very small (percentage of successful candidates drops with multiple subsequent attempts). You SHOULD consider a course.

Good luck.

Have you retaken your NCLEX? How are you prepping for it??

I completed a HURST review course and downloaded the $29.99 NCLEX RN application on my iPhone! Could not recommend these study methods more! Good luck!!

TO ANYONE WHO CAN RESPOND:

Hello I am in the same boat as you(took Nclex plenty of times), and I just wonder about the CPR that was mailed to you. Whenever someone fails, do they ever have a result on a subject saying "above passing "? because off all the times I took the nclex I just had "near passing" on each subject, i never had a result saying above passing. It made me feel more down because it seemed like I really need to go and start all over again when it comes to my content.

I am never giving up on this dream and I know it feels tiring, I feel so shameful and I feel too much pity for myself and I don't even know how to start and move on and start all over again. I just need help, advice mostly. I've been trying but I guess I haven't done enough. When you guys study do you spend the consecutive 4-6hrs reading and answering questions? I did most of the best review materials (Saunders, Kaplan, NCSBN, hurst you guys name it) But I do believe it is not with their study plan, it is how I study. So if anyone can give me some hope please just send me some Good Vibes. Thank you and GodBless!
