Hello everyone. I'm new here and I recently took my NCLEX-RN last week and failed after taking 75 questions. I couldn't understand why I failed because weeks up to my test date, I studied doing hundreds of practice questions a day...I used Saunders and Exam Cram. I thought I was ready to take it but the questions on the actual exam was completely different and much harder from my study guides! When the computer shut off at 75, I had a hope that may be I did pass...but instead I read "fail" after 2 days.
I was devastated. I cried all day that day and three days after that. I already had a job as a graduate nurse and had to tell my supervisor and co-workers. As a result, my status was changed and I had two more chances of passing the NCLEX or they have the right to terminate me. It didn't help that all of my classmates were passing during my grieving period.
So I signed up for Kaplan and will be taking the course during February. But as I started watching the online videos telling me about how the NCLEX worked, I felt completely stupid that when you fail at 75 questions, you did REALLY bad. I feel completely incompetent and pretty much discouraged that I did THAT bad. I just hope Kaplan helps me because I am a terrible standardized test-taker and I've decided to re-take the NCLEX as soon as possible for the sake of my job status and my mental/emotional status. So I'm giving myself 5 weeks or so on preparing to re-take my NCLEX...
I'm just so nervous and scared that because I did so bad failing at 75, that I'll probably fail with over 75 questions the next time. I would just like some support and reassurance that there is a chance that I can pass my second time even if I failed with the minimum amount of questions my first time. Please help. Feeling VERY discouraged. Thanks for reading.
Dont let it get you down, study again like its the first time taking and nail it...everything happens for a reason I live my life by that, maybe this time you will nail a proceedure down or something where later that may come into playing in saving a life....BEST OF LUCK and stop crying, there is no crying in nursing....ok well maybe not but it sounded good!
Starting NS in august so I cant say from experience, but just making it through NS is a huge feat in itself, this is just a hurdle....
hi again...so i passed in 75?s and wanted to give you advice...i took kaplan and did 100 q bank questions a day....make sure that you understand the rationales for the right answers as well as the wrong...i would do the q trainer tests 4-7 a few days before the exam....don't worry about your grades...i only scored in the 50s and low 60s..i know that i would not have been able to pass this exam without kaplan..it definately taught me how to make good choices on exams...and i have to tell you i felt that nclex was very similar to the last couple of q trainer tests...i also used the hesi comprehensive review for the nclex-examination 2nd edition by mosby and studied the hesi hints the day before the exam..i had this book because i failed the ati exit exams twice, and we were given hesi the 3rd try...i felt like i never was going to get out of nursing school...this book is well worth the money...practice prioritization of patients and infection control...and make sure that you are in a good place on the day of the exam...practice deep breathing if you start to freak out..and don't worry if you go to 265 ?s...i have friends that had 265 and all passed...please let us know how you make out...i will keep you in my prayers...good luck
You are not stupid or incompetent. I didn't pass the first time either and I only got 75 questions too. Its hard to go in and take the test the first time and not know what to expect. Now you know what it is going to be like and you can do it this next time. I took kaplan too and I thought that it did help me a little bit because the next time that I took the exam I got 265 but I still did not pass:sniff:! But you can do it!! You just have to stay positve and have faith that you will be a nurse and you will pass!! Best of Luck to you!!

Thanks for reading.
All I can say is that your post is well written and you sound like an intelligent person to me. So you didn't fail because you are dumb. Some people are better at taking standardized tests than others... You just need to get a lot more practice at taking the NCLEX.
If you've passed nursing school, you're not stupid. One way I found to take the NCLEX was to read the question, reword the question so I knew exactly what it was asking and then make sure the answer was what the question was asking. Does that make sense?
I used Saunders and also Kaplan. I also used an online site with 3500 questions. I didn't save the site but I found it on this forum, if that helps. I also that site was more like the NCLEX questions presented to me on the real test. Study more, make sure you know what the question is asking and go from there. You'll pass next time at 75. :)
Thanks everyone for your support. As hard as it is to believe, my 45 days has passed and I just recently scheduled to take my exam again! It will be on the 10th and I HOPE that this is it. I've done as much as I can with Kaplan. I did all of the seven Question Trainers and 100% of the Q Bank questions. What more can I do?? My plan from now until the exam is to review the questions I got wrong again (I've already gone over all of the questions right and wrong). I just hope that's a good way to study in the last days.
Fortunately, my work gave me the day before and the day of my exam off and this weekend is my off weekend...so thankfully, I have a long weekend to relax and prepare! Please pray for me or keep me in your thoughts in these last couple days and especially on the 10th! Thanks for your support and I hope I PASS this time with 75!
you are definately in my prayers...i even found a church on the way to the exam, and i thought i was doomed when the doors were locked...however, that wasn't the case because so many people were praying for me...my aunt said see what the power of prayer can do...i'm starting to sound like a holy roller now...but i know you can do it...good luck ...i know that you are going to shine....
