Failed the NCLEX-RN with 75 Qs (and I feel ridiculously stupid)

Published

Hello everyone. I'm new here and I recently took my NCLEX-RN last week and failed after taking 75 questions. I couldn't understand why I failed because weeks up to my test date, I studied doing hundreds of practice questions a day...I used Saunders and Exam Cram. I thought I was ready to take it but the questions on the actual exam was completely different and much harder from my study guides! When the computer shut off at 75, I had a hope that may be I did pass...but instead I read "fail" after 2 days.

I was devastated. I cried all day that day and three days after that. I already had a job as a graduate nurse and had to tell my supervisor and co-workers. As a result, my status was changed and I had two more chances of passing the NCLEX or they have the right to terminate me. It didn't help that all of my classmates were passing during my grieving period.

So I signed up for Kaplan and will be taking the course during February. But as I started watching the online videos telling me about how the NCLEX worked, I felt completely stupid that when you fail at 75 questions, you did REALLY bad. I feel completely incompetent and pretty much discouraged that I did THAT bad. I just hope Kaplan helps me because I am a terrible standardized test-taker and I've decided to re-take the NCLEX as soon as possible for the sake of my job status and my mental/emotional status. So I'm giving myself 5 weeks or so on preparing to re-take my NCLEX...

I'm just so nervous and scared that because I did so bad failing at 75, that I'll probably fail with over 75 questions the next time. I would just like some support and reassurance that there is a chance that I can pass my second time even if I failed with the minimum amount of questions my first time. Please help. Feeling VERY discouraged. :scrying: Thanks for reading.

Please do not feel stupid!! I am revving up for round 3....I too felt humliated & emberrased..shame & guilt for thinking I could pass. I too came out of a class of people who passed the first time & went on to getting jobs. I cried for weeks & was so depressed I had to start taking medication. When I took it the 2nd time it turned off at 181, I thought I passed...wrong!! That was even worse! Test anxiety is my enemy! i am a poor test taker as it is & then the anxiety was my pitfall.:banghead: I truly feel your pain & anguish. But we have come this far getting thru school...this test will not get us down! keep positive & know that you & I are not alone. That license is waiting for us & we will get it!

I PASSED!!! Thank you all for your support! This site really helped me cope through the time when I failed the NCLEX-RN the first time and the time as I prepare for my second try. :)

After much hard work by using Kaplan, I am happy to say that it all paid off. I am officially an RN!!! Thank you all! :D:D:D

OMG!!!!! i don't even know you, but i haven't stopped thinking about you...i am literally thrilled for you...kaplan is the best, isn't it.....good luck in your career and God bless....yeah!!!!!!!

I just found out that I failed with only 75 questions as well, I feel your pain. I totally lost all the confidence I had. I am so humiliated and discouraged. I worked so hard to get a degree that is worth nothing without this test. I have 6 children to support and lost my job because I chose nursing school over my job in Feb. 2010. I feel so burned out and crushed. I do not know what else to study. It never fails, I always get it down to two answers and then pick the wrong one. I just wanted you to know your not the only one who has failed. You'll get it next time.

kparri03,

don't give up! I know this is hard to digest for you. even myself failed the first time, took me sometime to regroup myself and finally the second attempt, i passed with 76 questions. have sometime to heal yourself and after that pick yourself up, evaluate what went wrong, have a calendar - stick to it and DISCIPLE yourself, know both contents and on how to answer the question.

If I made it the second time after 12 years graduated nursing overseas, then YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

So, put your head high again and say out loud: YES I CAN!
