Failed very first nursing text :(

Published

Hey everyone....I had my very first nursing test this past Friday and I failed by ONE point! :( I cried all day long and all weekend I have been feeling down on myself. I thought I knew the material front to back and figured I would know the question no matter what style questions the test had. I know it's way to early to be feeling like I can't do it but it was just a big blow way to early off :(

That's a bummer. It's tough when you feel confident and then don't do nearly as well as you'd like.

So you had a good cry. Now it's time to turn it around and kick your next test's behind! The positive here is that you only failed by ONE point. You walked blindly into your first nursing test ever (which is a beast unlike any other) and came awfully close to conquering it. So next time you'll have a little better idea of what and how to study and hopefully you'll knock it out of the park. :)

What do you think threw you off? We haven't had our first test yet, I'm dreading it. I'm sorry...... like PP said, it's behind you and it was a close one (I know, it's NS, so close doesn't count) but fortunately you won't fail your whole semester based on that one test. Hang tough. This is unlike any classes I have ever taken, so we can all relate.

This happened to ALOT of my peers the first test and they came back with 95s and 97s on their next one.

They realized HOW they needed to study and WHAT to study for that first go around.

It's almost like a trial and error with the first exam in any class!

You'll get it. Over prepare this time.

Have you looked through any of the available stuff of HOW to take the tests... like how to break down the questions and understand what they're actually asking?

The first test is an eye-opener for many students. The questions are very different. They're not testing your knowledge, they're testing your thinking skills.

I failed my first nursing test by a couple of points as well. I was devastated and shocked. I had always gotten good grades without trying. As you have discovered, nursing tests are a beast of a different nature. What really helped me was doing practice questions. I downloaded a Saunders Nursing Fundamentals app for my iPad. Becoming familiar with how the questions were worded, and what they were really asking was a huge help. Now, I'm just starting my third semester, and have my eyes on the finish line in May. Hang in there, it's never easy, but it does get better. Good luck to you!

I just had my first test today and I passed with a 73%...we have to pass 3/5 exams with at least a 70%. It will get better, you will see! We can do this...just gotta focus on the material and study study!! At least now we know what to expect on future exams :) turn the negative into a positive! :)

"Congratulations! Now you are officially a nursing student!!" That what two different of my nurse friends told me when I failed my first test last semester. It is a horrible feeling but it happens to a lot of people. Go to test review if your instructor does one. Schedule a time to meet with your instructor and go over the test to see where you went wrong. I promise, it happens to a lot of people. I know that doesn't help you right now but it is true. Good luck to you!!

Thanks everybody for the feedback, I have been so swamped with homework I haven't even had a chance to reply. But I have had 2 more tests since my first one, a Fundementals of Nursing the following Friday in which I made an 84!!!! I almost did cartwheels to the car. And then a Pharmacology test yesterday the 13th and made a freaking 90!!!! It CAN be done!! Woohoo!!!???

I failed my first quiz this 2nd semester and I was totally bummed out. I was way too overconfident and I didn't read when I should have. The 2nd quiz we had this past week, I almost aced it since I got back into study mode. I've learned from other classmates and seniors that some, if not most people will fail or do bad on at least on quiz in their nursing school.

Key thing I tell myself and my friends is that to put it aside. What's done is done and it can't be change. Toss it out of your mind and focus on the next quiz and study MORE. Easier said than done haha but it can work!

I failed my first nursing test last week too. I am in my third semester. Good luck and really really make nursing school your life.

Man I'd love to only need a 70. Our program requires an 80 on ALL theory grades or you don't pass the class.
