Expiration date on RN license

Hi,

I have a question regarding the expiration date on the RN license. I just passed the NCLEX (Yea!!!) and the expiration showing online is Dec/2014. Some of my classmates that passed their NCLEX last week has the expiration of Jun/2015. So I was wondering why their license expires after mine??? Why mine is less than 2 years. Thanks!

It's definitely different for each state! Passed NCLEX in June of this year and got my NC license, and endorsed to GA also in June. So, same month, same year... and my NC license expires 4/2015 and my GA license expires 1/2015. At least they're in the same year so I can remember them better. It would be nice if it was standardized so I could do everything at once, though.

In two states in which I've worked the license expires 2 years from the date of issue. In the 3rd state in which I've been licensed, the license expires on June 30th of odd years regardless of date of issue.

In Illinois all RNs renew 5/31 of even years. I believe (but am not sure) the LPNs renew on the same date in odd years.

Im in California. And my birthday is in November, but yet the expiration is dec 2014. So is less than 2 years and does not match with my birthday. This is so weird.
California does renewals four times a year: December, March, June and September.

My birthday is in February, so my California license is due for renewal in March. I was born in an odd-numbered year (1981), so I renew during odd-numbered years (2013, 2015, so forth).

PA has grouped Nurses into 2 groups with license renewals 6 months apart (April 30 and October 31) - I passed NCLEX in June and my license renewal is 10/31/14....

And Connecticut is still the odd ball state. Our licenses expire on the last day of your birth month and are renewed every year.

Here in Texas our licenses expire on the last day of your birth month every two years. Nurses born during odd-numbered years renew every odd-numbered year (2013, 2015, etc.) and nurses born during even-numbered years renew during even-numbered years (2014, 2016, etc.).

According to the California BORN: "Your first California RN license is issued for two birthdays - not two years - and it will expire the last day of the month following your birth date. From that date on, it will expire every two years, if renewed timely. Once a California license number is issued, it will always remain the same number whether active, inactive or delinquent. If the license lapses and is later renewed, the same license number and renewal cycle will apply."

So it actually makes perfect sense. Your classmates birthdays happened shortly before they took NCLEX so two birthdays for them is close to two years away.

Every state is different. In Massachusetts, RNs renew on their birthdays in even years and LPNs renew on their birthdays in odd years. I had to renew my license 8 months after I got it because I was licensed in June of an odd year and my birthday is in February.

KelRN215 your explanation makes totally sense. Thank you!!!<

I am not licensed...yet :) But is there a fee for renewal?

Oh, yeah. Every state has its own fees. If I remember correctly, my last MA renewal was something like $200.

As to keeping track if you have multiple licenses, I put them on my electronic calendar and also keep a file of PDFs of them in my computer. The folders are labeled things like "PA 2015" or "MA 2014" or whatever. I can eyeball it and see when the renewals are coming up and renew online without waiting for the mail notification. The PDFs are useful when I have to send a copy of one to somebody.

In CT, its $100 per year for RN's and $60 per year for LPN's. (why the big difference in fees I don't understand)
