Nurses, are you frustrated with trying to read theses forums only to find that most of the posts are from students or nurse wanna-be's looking for medical advice? You can usually tell them by the poor grammer.

Can we have a forum created for experienced nurses only to post?

No flames, let's just be honest here.

How can the Admin/Mod staff really know if you are a LPN or RN when you sign up here unless providing us with your license number....then there is the need for someone to verify information....reverify active license status etc.... How about retired nurses without active license. These are issues we face when trying to "limit" discussion to LPN/RN.

What purpose is an "experienced" nurses forum to hold that cannot be accomplished on the other 200 forums we have???.....

Protection from judgemental new nurses/students/people who aren't even students but have an opinion on how nurses "should" be who constantly bash older nurses. It amazes me that there are so few threads or comments directed at bad students, yet students frequently severely criticize us. It would give us a safe haven to vent. I just wish those of us with experience were afforded the protection students seem to get. I think a lot about that poster who no longer had the desire to precept. She was basically hounded off the board...how sad.

I don't know how licensure/exp. could be verified; that could be problematic. Maybe just a honor system. How are we verifying that people in the international forums are really from their stated country?

And for those who have stated that spelling errors show how well you are educated, studies have shown that a persons intelligence is not measured by their spelling.

This is not about eating the young; it's about the "old" trying not to get eaten by the young.

Is it that nurses eat their young, or is it that the young think all the experienced nurses are burnt out and should be placed in a retirement home? I don't mind at all when students ask questions and want to learn, but I do have a problem with a student telling me "How can you think that way? What kind of nurse are you??" when I vent about wanting to drop kick an annoying gomer over the highest cliff because of their attitude.

I was not directing the RN/LVN at you. Please do not take offense.
But it was my post that you were quoting and directing questions at, and no, not offended. It was very valid.

I do get upset when someone was a thread and the first response is "if your unhappy, leave!" But I have to say I doubt that only students write that.
Totally agree. Experienced folks have their moments.

Example: A thread about difficult family members and we're venting. Suddenly a nurse of 20 years has her dad in the hospital and now thinks it's ok to terrorize the staff, demand this or that, disregard visitation rules simply because she is a nurse (at another hospital mind you) and walk around the unit reminding everyone that she is a nurse and is watching everything you do so you better take great care of her dad. Of course previous to the shoe being on the other foot, she herself had family members make her shifts become miserable as well.

Edit to add: I LOVE THE FACT YOU USED YET-TO-BE in place of wanna-be. This would have eliminated alot of hurt feelings.

We were all wanna-be's as students. Otherwise we wouldn't have enrolled in school to begin with.

I guess "wanna-be" to me sounds like "You wish you were but you're not" and I don't like that implication, and yes it can sound offensive.

Just like saying to an LVN who just got her RN "Oh, you're a nurse now! Congratulations!"

Um, thanks, I guess... LOL!

"Yet-to-be" to me means "You're on your way or in the process of" which to me is a better description of a student or new grad gaining experience at any level.

I still would like to see a forum specifically for PRACTICING RN's, a safe place to vent and bounce things off each other.

But, as I see already from responses on this thread, students can't seem to follow directions and not post where they're not asked to.

So, as with everything in nursing, another good idea down the drain due to lack of support. Nothing will ever change in this profession.

The posts that get under my skin are the "The computer stopped at xxx questions- did I pass???!" WE DON'T KNOW. I come from the days of the two day marathon and months long wait, and despair at the instant results society we have created.

The people that I am not happy with are not the unknowledgeable, but the perfect ones. Whether they are students, patients, or nurses with 20+ years of experience, if I am having a bad day I already know it, and don't need anyone else to point out my flaws. If I crab about how the person that peed on the floor five times ruined my day I don't need anyone to say that the peer could possibly have a medical problem, or had just had 2L of fluid for an ultrasound, or maybe had a dancing alien in their bladder. Don't care if they do. I just don't like cleaning up pee.

The grammAr that comes to mind when reading this entry is

"Nurses eat their young"

It’s sad really. Especially since one of our fields biggest compliant is NEVER enough staff!

I say stop chomping and start encouraging. You just might be surprised at what a student or new grad could teach you.

HMMMM! Breaking the rules here student nurse butting in. As student nurses we don't ask for medical advice we often ask relevent questions to get a feel for what it is like when we do get out "there". I'm not asking "hey I have a big boil on my butt what should I do?" I am asking for honest advice or guidance or because of honest curiosity not because I am a lowly student wiff pour grammer!!

With an attitude like yours, there's only going to be one place for you in nursing - the ER!! So hurry up and finish school and come on down - we'll be waiting! :cool: (That's were the cool kids go.)
