Hey guys, I have read many post about pregnancy and nursing school and they have been helpful. But lately I have been hearing the same question often and that is "have you thought about deferring till the Spring" I completely get why people are asking me this but I feel like maybe I am making a mistake by attempting this semester.
I feel like I can do this. I may not get noticed in clinicals because I am not going to be able to do as much as the others, which i wonder if that will hurt me but I do plan on asking to watch or assist in many procedures and do my best in lecture classes.
I am due Dec 8th and the last day of class is the 10th...then finals are the 13th. What do you think? Lay it on me good or bad :)
There was a girl in my class that had her baby on Friday and came back on Wednesday to take the exams. She didnt miss a beat while in class, but I didn't have clinicals with her.
Original poster, I think seeing as you may have the option to wait (which some young girls really do not) is also something to consider. Why put your body and sanity through it if you don't have to? I still don't think it would be an ideal choice, especially giving birth one day then heading back to school the next. It's only a few more months to wait, and I have a feeling once you get in you may regret it. There was a girl in my A&P class who had to reschedule her exams after having her third child, and she was only taking A&P part time, not the entire nursing program. She was an A+ student and went down to a C on the finals, and said she obviously had very little time to study and difficulty concentrating!
Well from personal experience I got pregnant while in ns it was good at first but progressed to get worse (started passing out). It's basically your decision every pregnancy is different and though I have heard of women bouncing back within 2 days that can be a toss up as well. Speak with your advisors and see whats best for you and baby to.
Good luck!
It's very possible that you could successfully complete this semester, especially if your instructors are willing to work with you.
My experience is that every pregnancy and delivery is different. I've given birth to 6 children and it was different each time. Sometimes the pregnancy and delivery was a piece of cake, and sometimes not. Each pregnancy was tiring at the end, particularly when I had other children to take care of.
The thing that concerns me is that you've got a little one at home who is going to have to share mom very soon, and you might want to spend extra quality and unhurried time with that child as you and he/she prepare for the addition to the family.
That having been said, I know you've worked very hard to get where you're at now and that you're motivated and ready. Deferring won't change that or take away from it, but the time spent with your 3-year-old might be a very special gift for you both.
Whatever you decide, it will all work out. Having grandparents nearby is a huge help and blessing, too. The very best of luck to you, and congratulations on the new addition to your family!
This is such a tough decision...I feel very motivated and deeply feel like I will be able to do this. I spoke with my OB and she said go for it so I asked her what my restrictions were and she said the main thing is lifting. Then she said of course the commone sense stuff like stay away from airborne.
I totally get what everyone is saying and really appreciate it. I am now just waiting to see what my advisor says. If she says the faculty will work with me then I will probably go for it.
I have been home from work for a month now and feel so blah BUT when I was working i felt so much better because I was up constantly moving and wasnt getting tired...until I stopped moving for a bit lol.
Also if I do defer then what happens with all he books I just bought? I have already started studying as well so I would hate to suddenly stop because im not going.
One last thing is I am not sure how deferrment works. If I have to be put on a list and "compete" for the BSN again then I will lose because my GPA just dropped even lower so I dont think i would get accepted again.
I thank all of you so much, the insight has been really helpful in having me look at the whole picture on both sides. I love this site! :)
I think you're wise to speak with your advisor and see if something can be worked out for you, either in terms of getting a deferment or a contingency plan in case you'd deliver early. One of my classmates in my graduate program just had a baby a couple of weeks before the end of the summer session and, while it wasn't easy, it was doable.
I wish you the best in school and with your family!
My biggest concern would be... If you do not defer and it does not work out as planned, will you then lose your place completely? It may be wiser to defer your admission till spring if you would risk losing your place completely if something were to go horribly wrong.
Also take into consideration that just because you had a lady partsl birth the first go around (assumption here of course) that a C-Section is much more difficult to recover from, and will leave you in the hospital for a few days. Even if you do continue this semester that will be something you need to plan for with your instructors when it comes to exams and such.

:) you can do it! as long as you put your heart into it you can.
A lot of women defer-- for different reasons or another-- but if you have a good support system, you can do it!
I had my baby in the middle of the nursing school program. It was very difficult, but I was very determined. I ended up finishing, and I am so glad that I did it and did not defer.
I am able to give my baby a better life because of it.
best of luck!!
As a nursing student, mother of 3 and I am also expecting I encourage you to start this semester. I was pregnant before nursing school started (I did not know until almost half way through the first semester). I finished second semester including clinicals with limited restrictions. I did not miss out on anything due to my pregnancy. Yes, I was tired and sometimes in pain but it is worth it. I actually start third semester in a couple weeks and I am due the end of September. I am not taking a break bec I am so close and the school has made it harder to get back in. My pregnancy has flown by bec I have been so busy with school. If you are determined then I said do it, but it is alot of hard work. Personally, I am enhoying every moment of school and my pregnancy.

That seems like a lot to take on, but I've never been pregnant so what do I know? lol
I think if you're motivated enough to do it then you can do it. I've had a pregnant classmate who gave birth toward the end of the semester and came back a few days later to finish up the class. Maybe it was a week later, I forget, but it was really fast! Obviously she had a lot of support in order to do that and you said you have that also so you should be fine. Best of luck to you :)
