Excited about school but...22 weeks preggars

Published

Hey guys, I have read many post about pregnancy and nursing school and they have been helpful. But lately I have been hearing the same question often and that is "have you thought about deferring till the Spring" I completely get why people are asking me this but I feel like maybe I am making a mistake by attempting this semester.

I feel like I can do this. I may not get noticed in clinicals because I am not going to be able to do as much as the others, which i wonder if that will hurt me but I do plan on asking to watch or assist in many procedures and do my best in lecture classes.

I am due Dec 8th and the last day of class is the 10th...then finals are the 13th. What do you think? Lay it on me good or bad :)

Personally, I think you should defer for the simple fact that you dont know when the baby will come or if complications may arise. Not sure if this is your first baby or not (Im assuming it is), but just because your due "this or that day" doesnt mean its gonna happen.

The third trimester is the absolute hardest. Thats when all the swelling and discomfort starts to kick in and the last place you want to be during that hard time is in clinicals. I understand each person is different but since I've already been through it twice I can tell you that deferring until Spring will probably be best. Im sure thats probably not what you wanted to hear but Im just being honest. You're gonna be miserable hun, and it's gonna suck to have to come home and stay up all night doing homework and care plans when all you really want to do is lie down and relax.

If you werent already so far along I would say go for it but I couldnt imagine being 8 or 9 months pregnant and not being able to sleep/rest/curl into a ball whenever I wanted to.

Good luck with your decision though!

If nursing school is as important to you as having a baby, which it should be! I would personally wait until after the baby is born and things have settled down a bit. I'm sure you want to do well in school, and spend time having the joys of being a new mom and spending time with your baby... I know I would!

As much as people don't think nurses do patient care, they do, and you will probably not be able to assist with AM care during your final stages of pregnancy, nevermind boosting a patient/turns, etc. You could potentionally miss out a lot of the basics, and do you really want to go into doing your finals just days after having your baby? (if he/she arrives on time!) You'll want time to study, AND time to spend bonding with the new baby.. Both hard tasks to do at once, nevermind together! keep in mind it is your decision, but either way doing one thing on its own is tought enough on your mind, body, and health.

Thank you so much for your responses. This is my second pregnancy. Have such a big decision to make before the end of the month

I'm a mother of two, and if this is what you want to do then you can. Just talk to your instructors, and they maybe able to work something out. Good Luck too you!

You will be able to do just as much as the other students, even at the end. I have never had a problem with it.

Is this your first pregnancy? You won't really know how the end of your pregnancy will be. Or if you will actually deliver when due. Also, around month 8 you get this ungodly rush of hormones and it's HARD TO THINK. Your theory portions will be difficult. I know that *everybody* is different, but you can't assume that you'll be out of the norm and not have a problem with it. I'm not saying don't go through with it, just realize that the amount of time an energy you are likely to need will be much greater than your fellow students - the brain does not function well when being drowned in hormones.

Make sure you have a plan with your teachers and the option to take an incomplete and finish up a few weeks after delivery.

Good luck! :)

wait...didn't you sign a wavier that will kick you out if you get pregos?

I don't know if they can legally do that.. However, I do know students in my class were sent a letter advising us to work while we are in the accelerated program as it could obviously jeopordize our grades if we can't manage our time wisely. I guess the same could go for pregnancy, but everyone is obviously different, and able to handle different situations.

Yeah, that sounds illegal..

we had a few pregnant girls in my class and they were able to do pretty much everything except go along to watch procedures involving radiation.

I would wait. You really never know what could happen in pregnancy. After three perfectly uneventful pregnancies, I ended up with serious complications, bedrest, and a pre-term birth. Thankfully, I took that semester off. I think you could focus better on both by waiting. Wishing you a smooth and healthy pregnancy and delivery.

Thank you all for responding. I am trying to get ahold of my advisor to also speak with her. I have heard both sides from many people.

This is my second child and I completely understand that you never know what will happen. I do have a great family support system and wont be working. My 3 year old can easily walk to his grandmas (we are about 10 feet away lol) so i can study or nap or relax. As far as the pregnancy I have no clue. My first was so easy and ha no problems at all. With this one I just seem to be getting bigger a heck of alot faster.

I also know I work really well under pressure and stress...I want to do this so bad right now but in the end would hate if I got booted or something in the last week of school KWIM

In my mind I can have her on the 9th or 10th then make it back for finals on the 13th :) lol
