Excelsior

U.S.A. California

Recently I was told that California LVN's will not be allowed to sit for their RN boards if they attended and graduated from Excelsior College, that these credits will be null and void. Has anyone heard this, I'm still trying to find out the truth!!

Seems to be true.

Page nine.

Perhaps as an LVN you could take the physiology, microbiology, and other classes at a Jr. College while on the waiting list for the second year of their ADN program.

Yes I heard this was true as well. renerian

That application just says that LVN's cannot sit for the 30 unit option, which has always been true. As far as I can see, it's fine for LVN's that actually graduate from Excelsior to sit boards AT THAT TIME. HOWEVER, the California BRN appears to be extremely close to yanking out Excelsior altogether :(.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR

CALIFORNIA NURSING STUDENTS

At its meeting on August 21, 2003, the Education/Licensing Committee of the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) voted to recommend to the full BRN that persons who enroll in the associate degree programs in our School of Nursing on or after September 13, 2003 should no longer be eligible for direct licensure as Registered Nurses in California. We are anticipating that the full BRN will accept and approve this recommendation at its September 12 meeting.

The BRN has stated that the recommendation is not based on safety concerns or the performance of our graduates. It has indicated that the issue is one of total clinical hours.

If you are planning to pursue your Nursing degree through the Excelsior College School of Nursing, this new development in California will have an impact on your nursing plans. In order to graduate with your associate degree from Excelsior College and be eligible for direct licensure as a Registered Nurse in California, you must make sure your Enrollment Form is received by Excelsior College no later than September 12, 2003.

Great!

If you are already enrolled it seems OK.

It would just be terrible to spend the money and time and not be allowed to take the boards.

I'm not sure whether these scholarships are available for you, but it may be worth looking into.

Hello,

Yes, on Friday, September 12th, the SBON in California will be conducting a meeting on whether to continue this program with Excelsior College.

Now, if you are already enrolled or have already sat for the NCLEX exam, you are safe. If you have not enrolled by Friday, September 12th, you will no longer be qualified to do this program. The reason is simple, if this decision gets approved on Friday, the last day to enroll with Excelsior is Friday the 12th. You can enroll online or by fax or overnight the enrollment form. You must also send them a copy of your licensure and $142 towards their enrollment fee. Once you've started that process, you can apply for grants, scholarships, loans, etc all through Excelsior to help with their fees.

If there's anything I can help with, let me know.

As long as you are registered by Sept 12 you can still take the exam.

Thank you all for your reply, I made the deadline!!!!!!!!YEA!!!!!!!

Good for YOU! Congrats, and I wish you well on obtaining your goals!:)

I think California nurses should know this too. I looked on the BRN site and did not find it. Probably looking in the wrong place.

October 17, 2003

The Education/Licensing Committee took the following action at its meeting on October 17, 2003:

"Approve the eligibility of Excelsior College graduates applying for licensure as an RN, provided that they meet the following requirements:

2. Must have 8 units or 360 hours of supervised clinical experience through a California approved program. The clinical areas required are to be in advanced medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, and geriatrics.

3. The practicums may be provided through the Open University option throughout California State University system, California Community College system, or through independent college system.

4. Comply with LVN to RN requirements under California law, Business and Professions Code Section 2736.6 and California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Section 1429.

Such eligibility requirements will apply to students who enroll at Excelsior College on or after December 6, 2003."

This recommendation will be presented by the Committee to the full Board at its meeting on December 5, 2003, for final action.

Thanks space nurse for posting this here.

Here is the link, and it is posted on the board under news update:

Just so you all know...our floor just let a grad from Excelsior go and has recommended that our hospital no longer hire them.

This girl was pretty bad and UNSAFE due to the lack of clinical experience she had had. It seems that her LVN program also was lacking in actual clinical time, and she had not been a working LVN for very long, either.

This is the reason for all those new requirements, such as being an LVN for one year, increased clincal hours, etc.

I don't know much about the program (Excelsior), I just don't think anything can subsitute hands on clinical time. I had a few online classes when I went from RN to BSN but that was only lecture type classes, I still had clinical.
