Everyone wants me to take Nursing?

Published

I'm CNA and hate it so I decided to do Dietary Aide instead .However, some of my colleges are always saying ,you should do Nursing, its better. The thing is, I don't think I will like Nursing .And with dietary aide you make the same as CNA were I live which is $20 an hour and you won't be doing any grunt work. The nurses make $23 an hour which isn't that much difference from CNA and Dietary Aide. And some LTC that are owned by the government I could make up to 23 an hour as dietary aide which is decent salary without having all that responsibility on my shoulders. Even one of the house keepers was like"since you're already psw why don't be an RPN?What's so special about Nursing? Also what Nursing is really like?Is it an easy job?

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

Did you REALLY just ask if nursing was an easy job?

Look around you at work- do the nurses look like their job is easy?

Haha. No.

Nursing is hard. Very hard.

I don't understand what your "colleges" [sic] are telling you, but you seem ok with your current salary. Nursing school requires high grades, maximum effort, and a single-minded drive/desire to be a nurse. I don't sense that you have any of those.

Go for Dietary Aide.

Specializes in OR, Nursing Professional Development.

Other people aren't living your life for you. You need to live your life for you. If you don't like being a CNA and don't think you'll like being an RN, don't be an RN. Do what's right for you.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

To the original poster...are you in Canada by any chance? I am wondering due to your use of the RPN acronym.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of respondents will be from the States, where nursing entails a very different status and set of professional norms.

Yes ,I'm from Canada

If you are happy doing what you are doing and do not want to become a nurse, then continue doing what you are doing. Don't let others steer you in a direction you don't feel like you want to do or are not ready to do.

Only $3 between a CNA and nurse? Must be a cushy job for the nurses, otherwise, I don't see any retention.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

Who cares what "THEY" want. What do YOU want?

Look around this forum and count how many posts you see THIS WEEK ALONE with titles like "I can't handle this" or "New nurse--I need help" or "Please tell me this gets easier" or "I'm about to quit my job" ... and then come ask us again if nursing is easy.

You already stated you don't think you'll like nursing. There's your answer.

Boggles my mind that a dietary aid makes $20/hr. If nurses only make $23, I can't see a reason to go into the field. Canada is weird, eh?

Im really interested in the difference between US and Canada now

Look if you don't want to be a nurse, don't be one! I am a little unsure if you are comparing an actual nurse to a dietary aide or a nurses' helper to a dietary aide. Either way, you are not interested in nursing and that is more than fine! Become a dietary aide, save your back! You may start down a career of being a dietician and wouldn't that be exciting!
