every LPN in my hosp was laid off today

Published

i'm still just in shock. Some had been there for 30 plus years. Everyone was called into HR and told they were no longer needed and would not be working another shift. So much for my educational loan assistance....

So we were good enough to take teams of patients and make half RN pay while doing the work before, but as soon as the hospital had budget issues, we were suddenly not good enough nurses anymore apparently.

Obviously it was impossible to work on hospital layoffs throughout the entire hospital rather than targeting one class. (sarcastic):banghead:

Just received word that the official count was over 100. I didn't realize we had that many, but I forgot about SNF and Rehab etc. Ouch. And they told staff in their staff meetings this morning that they will not rehire LPN's EVER because it is irresponsible since they work under the RN's license.

Heh.. so they have allowed incompetent, unsafe care all these many years, and just now figured it out when they had budget issues. Amazing. RN's asked would they be hiring more RN's to take up our space and management told them no, then said that our, I mean.. their Techs could no longer draw blood either.

Hey, flowerbudd, I noticed you were in Missouri also. I'm located near St. Louis...mind PMing me with who you worked for? I'm trying to keep track of the trends in state so I know what my options will be if anything similar happens to me.

So fewer hands are safer than more.

Gotcha.

I am so sorry to hear that. It makes you wonder the thinking...you do have qualified nurses, but you lay them off, place more on the RNs, and then worry about the lawsuits due to the RNs unable to handle the workload. Smart folks...

I am watching the trends and while I have not seen it happen here yet, nothing would surprize me. I do have to think about what I wish to do, because for me, RN is completely out of the question. Nothing against them, but not worth the headache. I may actually start thinking about going back to school for something else, however.

I am so sorry. Good luck and God Bless.

What kind of logic is this? Whoops, it was a managment decision, and therefore doesn't need to pass the logic test. I'm sorry that you lost your job, and hope that you find one soon. If I was an RN working for that hospital, I'd be looking for a new place as well, since it sounds as if they are quickly headed for an unsafe workplace. Pity the patients!

I am so sorry. What a shame for all involved. :(

I know that LPNs are happy with their position or they would continue on for their RN but in light of the writing on the wall I do think it is prudent to think of either continuing on with your education or possibly as Pagandeva2000 wrote consider a different career.

That said, Pagandeva2000, it would be a horribly sad day if you decide to quit nursing. Please, please consider that there are RN positions that are not as hideous as you may think. Truly I am doing 97% of the exact same job for way more job security and money. You are meant to be a nurse, girlfriend. :)

This happened a few years back at one of our local hospitals that my friend was working at. He was an LVN in a LVN-RN program when it happened. They told him that they were getting rid of all LVNs and that if he wanted to stay he could.....for minimum wage! He left.

MINIMAL WAGE??? I would have walked out of there, even as an RN.

I am so sorry for you and your co-workers. Management does some highly irresponsible thing when tyhe are trimming the budget. I hope you are able to find a job that will work for you. Home care is a good option for when you are in school, that may work for you.

If it makes you feel any better, one of my local hospitals did this about ten years ago. LPN's could work as PCT's at PCT pay or leave. Most left. RN's also left due to poor staffing. Patients complained. Bottom line : they had to start hiring LPN's again. They also got a fine for violations of the Nurse Practice Act for letting UAP's do nursing tasks.

Unfortunate. Not every LPN aspires to be an RN. If they wanted to be one, they would have been on years ago. Besides there are veteran LPNs that can run rings around the young chippie fresh out of graduate school. It's the hospital's loss. Good thing about nursing is that there are lots of jobs.

I couldn't agree more. About 10 years ago, our hospital gave all the LPN's the choice of leaving or becoming glorified aids! Can you imagine? One of the worst mistakes they ever made. This wasn't a budgetary move, but one that was supposed to improve the image of the hospital. I don't think it worked.

Shoot, the first two aids I worked with as a brand new RN had 40 years between them, and I learned more from them in the first 6 months I worked there than I did in all of nursing school. Very sad, for LPN's.
