EMR--what do you use?

Published

What do you use for your charting? I despise the system I have to document under. Its very outdated, previous documentation is easily altered. When I enter things in the system and run reports, half my information is missing, leaving me to have to double document everything through tally marks on paper so I have numbers for my end of year report.

I have tossed the idea out to my admin that I need an updated program. I spend more time messing with documentation than I do caring for kids. My vaccination information will randomly disappear for example, and then I am left digging through paper charts to re-enter the information. Also we consist of 2 elementary schools. Kids bounce between the two schools frequently (due to foster care situations or just moving in general). Every time they switch between the two school information has to be entered in again, a paper chart is sent back and forth-and I spend SO much time tracking down these stupid charts-I think it is ridiculous. I'd like to find a system I could scan everything in and no need to print it out until the student physically transfers out of the district.

I dont even know where to start!!

NutmeggeRN Thats what we have! I hate it...or am I just not aware of its capabilities? Maybe ours is outdated? I have so many issues with it!

It has its challenges for sure, but it is the only one I have ever used...s, so I Use it as best I can..

We use Cerner for Charting, Medication scanning, for Lab...etc, and Omnicell for narcotics. They all took a lot of getting used to, but life is a little easier with them than before; specially if you're good in getting around with computers, or your wifi doesn't go drop dead on the middle of the night or on the weekend (When IT help is almost non-existent).

My prior district was Poor School which is terrible for medical stuff. My new district uses "Health Office Anywhere" which seems pretty good so far.

We use RenWeb, a web based suite. We could customize and I love it, we can email parents our documentation as we do it, so contacting parents take zero time out of our day.

Specializes in school nursing, ortho, trauma.

I use healthoffice anywhere for the medicals. the district uses realtime which does have its own medical portion, but when i asked about things like audit trails and got a blank stare, my supe said he'd let me keep health office. i've been using it for ages, i can navigate and chart through it quickly.

We use a health add on to Tyler Sis. It is our new swear word, we loathe it.

Specializes in Pediatrics; School Nurse.

We use Magnus. It's too expensive and not as user-friendly as the sales team would have you believe. If you have high acuity, unlimited funds, and your own designated in-house I.T. point person, go for it. Otherwise, consider something simpler.

We had a emr like that once, you could swear you had charted then at end of shift when you review all would be gone..drove us crazy

I would say take a screen shot with phone and show them but not sure if that would be unacceptable.

Question for SNAP users-looking at this software now. For Immunization entry, do you have to select the immunization from the drop-down menu for each immunization, or does live version have immunizations for your state "preloaded" so that you just enter dates?

You can upload your state's requirements to SNAP, so it will tell you if a student is compliant (most of the time) or not with immunizations once the dates are entered. However, the immunizations are not preloaded, but once I do the thing I describe below, it's not too time consuming to enter dates.

To enter the immunizations, well, this is what works for me:

I pick either varicella or MMR (usually varicella so we will go with that one) and click add new x 2. You have to choose varicella for each entry and then enter the dates. Then I click off of the immunization entry page (like to demographics or screenings- doesn't matter where you click) and then click on the immunization entry page again. When you do this, the varicella vaccine dates you just entered are now in a group and you can now enter the rest of the vaccinations in a group. So I click new 5 times, then choose DTaP/DTP from the drop down menu once, and just enter the dates. It's a quirky workaround, but it works for me.

Thanks Ohiobobcat! Another question-is it possible to "narrow down" reports for specific things-for example, can you run a report that will show how many 2nd graders who were seen for vomiting?

Yes- if you document it the same way every time. SNAP can pull reports if you choose vomiting from it's database, but not if you free-type vomiting during your assessment. SNAP allows you create templates for frequent visits. So I choose "Vomiting" from my template list and that way they are all documented the same way.
