ALSO...............THE SCHOOL IS NOT ALLOWED TO DISCUSS OTHER STUDENT'S GRADES WITH PEOPLE. IF THAT LADY DID SAY THAT, SHE CAN GET IN SOME MAJOR TROUBLE!

Yup - FERPA violations are just as serious as HIPAA violations!

When a program is losing 75% of it's enrollees over the course of the program, there is obviously a problem. That is a LOT of resources sucked down the drain for naught. It appears the selection process may be flawed right up front, and it is likely that there is some additional issues along the way. I know a lot of emphasis is placed on GPA in cadidate selection, but that may not be the best way to select nursing students.

I was just reading what you guys were saying about the 1st semester book pack. That thing is $529 plus tax. I have not bought it yet - the bookstore won't have them for 2 more weeks. I stil haven't decided if I want to buy it yet. Does anyone have the book pack from 1st semester that they would like to sell? Even if you don't have the whole pack I would be interested in individual books as well in good condition with little to no highlighting or writing. Feel free to PM.

Amy

Amy,

we all still need those books . But just my opinion, buy the books through Amazon , most of us did not use the computer programs that came with it from evolve.

Thanks for the insight. I have come to the conclusion that I am NOT going to buy that book pack. I am going to get what I can used and buy the rest new from Amazon since theres no tax. Also, the electronic books aren't going to help enough for me to pay an extra $150-$200 for it. They haven't had it that long because the current 4th semester students did NOT have it when they started the program. For years people have been passing the program without it so I am going to go the "traditional" route and save my $$$. :D

They loose 75%???? Wow. I knew it was high, but WOW!

So many people that apply to the nursing program are brilliant, and I'm not just talking book smarts. If the folks who post on allnurses are a fair representation of the EC/NL applicant pool, then they really do need to examine that loss %. That goes for every Health occupation program on the campus.

I always say my education at EC was excellent and recommend it to EVERYONE I talk to. Still even a good program must examine its weak spots. That's how it stays good.

I certainly agree. You have to have a 4.0 to get in and I know some people have repeated some of the pre. req. and support classes 3 or more times to get an A. If you were allowed to repeat a nursing class 3 or more times you are bound to get an A as well. I am SURE there's more to nursing than getting an A in a class.

I repeated a few pre-reqs to make my B's become A's.

I don't think that's a factor at all.

Just because a person can make an A in Algebra the first time, doesn't mean they will be a good nurse.

That is very interesting.....

I am sure it's all a huge cover up. It was easier to give that student the points she didn't deserve than to fight her on it. When they saw that she wasn't going to drop, I'm sure that's when she was given the points...this is so frustrating.

What's even worse in every test there are some questions that can be tossed out due to grammar/spelling, etc. I bet that's were they got the points.

Yep...this could turn into a nasty legal dispute.

Yes, I don't think passing Algebra with an A the first time means you will make a good nurse. Still I think all the Health Occ programs at EC have 'dead wood' (staff, faculty) that needs to be weeded out. Just my personal experience.

With all of that, I'd hire an EC grad or have one care for me or a family member any day of the week.

See that's the point. We did get a question tossed and if whoever picked the correct choice received the 2 points. I know for a fact this student did not receive those points at the time because she told me she was still going to stay in the program and fight this dumb rule. Why would she say that if she had been given the points? Now this student is saying that she was given the points just last week..........hmmmm....the test was about 3 weeks ago....that's what makes me think that they saw how defiant she was being and just gave her the points. I wouldn't want that type of person being a nurse for my loved ones!

Is she any good in clinical?

Personally I think the rule is wrong. If the student needs a 78 or 80 average to pass, the student should be allowed the chance to get the average. Even if there is statistically NO chance they can get that %, If they are not disruptive or a danger in clinical, the student should be allowed to stay.

They paid their tuition and met the prereq requirement to get into the class. They will properly fail out at the end of the semester. It's not like the school can fill the spot half-way through the semester with another student. The instructor gets paid regardless. The studnet is already counted with regards to clinical spots. Why waste the resource?

I think staying in when you know you are going to fail at the end of the semester shows moxy. Imagine how much guts it takes to get up evey day and face all that work when you know you are licked.

Perhaps allowing them to finish and re-enroll in the class the next semester will put them mentally ahead of the game.
