my name is allison shaffer and it's nice to meet you. i know we will all be close because it's a small group. it would be nice to get to know some of you before november 17. :)

El Centro has a lot of issues. There is a teacher who told someone I know that because she is really nervous with check-offs that she should try to find another career. Who is she to tell someone this? She shakes really bad when she has check-offs but when it comes to clinical she did a good job from what I can see last semester when I had her in my clinical.

:angryfire :angryfire :angryfire We are NOT in acting school.

Can't she video tape the check-offs???????????????????????

Wow. I'm sorry you guys have these issues at your school.

So far, all my instructors have been nothing but supportive.

Given, I have have heard stories of one or two hard CI's, even they are usually judged as beneficial in the end because they teach you a lot about real nursing.

Our grading policies are pretty fair as far as I'm concerned.

I hope I still feel this way after third and fourth semester.

Good Luck to you all.

Guys, we at NLC don't get too much info on what's going on with this 70% rule at ECC. :o I didn't even see that letter you wrote. I have just checked our class info at eCampus and we still have 38 people out of 40. So it looks like we haven't lost as many as at ECC.

However, I do think that this 70% rule is a problem of all campuses and I hope there is a solution out there.

They have some control. All hope is not lost. They can wait and start the program again or they can challenge the rule.

Am I correct in assuming that this "two test below 68% and your out" rule is a new one of the last semester or two? Since they are saying that they came up with this rule because anyone who scored under 68% would not pass that section of the NCLEX- what about all those EC grad who DID get a test score below 68% and went on to NCLEX success??

Any good lawyer would have a field day with that.

Actually, it's two test scores of 70 or below. It's not a new rule, but has not been in use in the last few years. Also, there is a rumor going around that the rule is currently being challenged and reconsidered.

Why does the rule exist? - The goal is to produce safe nurses. Would you want your [fill in favorite relative here] to be taken care of by someone who coudl NOT learn the material?

What about those who failed tests at ECC, but passed NCLEX? - No one who achieved less than a 78 average was ever allowed to take the NCLEX. Those who failed in specific areas were required to "remediate" which means they had to do extra work to prove they HAD learned the material.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion.

just want to add -

When a program is losing 75% of it's enrollees over the course of the program, there is obviously a problem. That is a LOT of resources sucked down the drain for naught. It appears the selection process may be flawed right up front, and it is likely that there is some additional issues along the way. I know a lot of emphasis is placed on GPA in cadidate selection, but that may not be the best way to select nursing students.

Would you please tell us where you go that figure?

Personally I think the rule is wrong...

I think staying in when you know you are going to fail at the end of the semester shows moxy. Imagine how much guts it takes to get up evey day and face all that work when you know you are licked.

Perhaps allowing them to finish and re-enroll in the class the next semester will put them mentally ahead of the game.

The idea was to make sure each of them could withdraw while still passing, as that has a BIG effect on whether they are allowed to re-apply.

And now I am going to leave this forum and I promise not to return so you students may feel free to say whatever you want to. I only stumbled across it by accident. It's been most interesting to see what's being said. Good luck to you all.

I was simply responding to what had been stated here in a couple of places.

I would also add...

it wasn't specifically directed at ECC.

The program I attended many moons ago - my class graduated only 32% of it's orignal members with the original class. It seems to be a common phenomenon among nursing programs.

I'm all for learning the material - and remediation is definately in order, I also understand that there are some students who simply can't be remediated, but perhaps strengthening the selection process would take care of some of that up front.

Everyone has a right to be here. We know that there are eyes out there. lol

Thanks for your words. :)

Out of curiosity.....what is the procedure if you do wind up dropping (for whatever reason) to get back into the program? Do you reapply for whatever semester you are having to repeat? And how is it decided if you get back in or not? Hopefully I'll never need to know this information, but...
