Early Morning Clinicals

Published

I have finally gotten my clinical assignment. I have clinicals on Monday's from 6am to 12 noon. That means I have to wake up around 4am :stone (to review patient's info and to get ready). I'll leave around 5 to get to the hospital (30 min drive) on time. This is crazy!!! Does anyone else have experience with early morning clinicals???

We have early morning clinicals from 0630-1330. During Med-Surg, we had to spend at least an hour at the hospital the day before clinicals gathering information about the client. Then we spent 6-8 hours writing up care plans, med sheets, lab results, etc. Four or five hours of sleep before clinicals was something to be VERY grateful for. Good luck!

Yep -- sounds pretty typical.

The reason we are there so early at my school is so that you can listen to report on your pt ~7:00 am. I'm pretty sure its the same just about everywhere.

Yup!

I wanted the early clinical (7am-1pm) but I was the last to respond so I got stuck in evening, 3pm-9pm. It's at a hospital that I prefer (the one I actually want to work at when I graduate) but I had an evening job all set up and my school always does things like this without warning. We were not supposed to have any evening clinicals. It ticked me off to say the least. I thought I signed up for a DAY program! It's so unorganized...

Well, I am the instructor, too! And, I have to be there the day before to make out the assignments, get there early to make sure all is ready, stay until the last student leaves, then mark care plans and presentations. Then, the next day I go to work - 0645-1915. So, as someone else said, get used to it! If you don't see 0600 on the way in, you certainly will see it on the way out!

My first semester was: Wed/Thurs/Fri 0630 - 1300 Then we had post confrence for an hour (or however long she decieded to ramble). We gathered information for a careplan sometime Wed/Thurs/Fri (it was due the following Mon) since she was so disorganized that even she didn't know who we were taking care of until that morning.

This semester I have: Wednesday 1000 - 1200 Thurs/Fri 0630 - 1230 Lunch is from 1230 - 1300 and we post confrence until 1415. The reason Wednesday is so short is he gives us those two hours to gather information and get aquainted with our patient. Then the rest of the day is to go home and work on a careplan. I live 45 minutes away from this particular hospital and I have to pick up my carpool buddy so I get up around 0430. I hate getting up before the sun but what can you do?

I will be! I'm not looking forward to the early mornings, but I am looking forward to the afternoon naps!!

Wow 6:30 am is too early. When I was in school our clinicals began at 8:00 am and ended at 2:00 PM. I'm not a morning person! :(

Good Luck and enjoy every experience!

I agree with you, 6:30 am is way too early. I'm in Brooklyn doing clinicals at Lutheran Medical Center. We start at 8:00 am suppose to go till 2:00 but usually leave by 12:30 bc we skip any coffee breaks and lunch.

Congragulations on graduating!!!!!

I guess that most of you plan on working PM or night shift when you are done with school??? Stick with it, getting up early is the least of your challenges that you will face as a nurse...

Good Luck,

6:45 - 14 or 1500 here. I live two hours away so I get up at 4 to make it there in time. I'm just worried about next semester when I have to get pt info the night before and write up care plans:

...get info at 18 or 1900, drive home, get home at 2100, do care plan until 2400 or whenever, get up at 4 and drive the two hours back again???!!! I will be falling asleep at the wheel! I may try to find a classmate to spend the night with on those nights, but dh is not going to be thrilled in the least.

I feel so lucky now. My clinical starts at 7, but we are supposed to be there at 6:30 to review the client's data and such. I'm so lucky though because the clinical is a 5 minute drive from my house! :) I have to drive way farther to get to the rest of my classes, though.

And wow, 2 hour drives. You guys are sure dedicated. I don't know if I could've done that. :)

My clinicals are from 6am-3pm and I drive an hour and a half to get there and we do this 3 days a week -each of the three days of clinical is based on a certain subject. Sleep and relaxation are a thing of the past, you'll get used to it and it won't be so bad. Just STAY AWAKE!
