Hey everyone! I was just hired as a new grad into the new grad nurse residency program at Duke University Hospital. I live about 8 hours away and I'm hoping to connect with others who will also be starting the program in July! I'm also looking for recommendations on places to live in the Duke/Raleigh area!
Would any of you be willing to share what the hourly pay is like? Is it decent enough to live on comfortably in the area? Is there a lot of opportunities to move up the clinical ladder?
My starting pay is $23.85. $5.50 differential for nights, $9 differential on weekends. $14.50 for weekend nights which I plan to take advantage of.
Can anyone give some advice about the upcoming open house "hiring event" on March 15th pleeeeasseee? I live on the west coast and am considering flying out for this hiring event but would like more specific information. I am having trouble speaking to anyone live in nurse recruiting, so I was hoping some of you may be able to answer my questions. The recruiter that emailed me back told me that specific units will be filling their remaining open new grad positions at the hiring event so if I could make it out that would be my best option. Has anyone attended a hiring event at Duke? If so, how does it work? Are you able to interview there on the spot with the nurse managers? Do they offer you a position there on the spot, or in my case would I have to fly back out east at another date for a more formal interview? Are you allowed to apply to more than one open house position and meet multiple managers of different units at the same open house, or is that looked down upon? Thank you so much!
It won't let me post to specific people, so sorry for flooding you all with questions.
EMTRN: I was wondering if you could provide me some advice. I too am trying to get a new grad ED position at Duke. I am considering flying out from the west coast next week for the hiring event on March 15th. The nurse recruiter told me many of the units will be filling their remaining new grad positions at this event. What was your experience like at the open house? Do they interview you one on one on the spot? Were you offered a position there? I'm having trouble speaking with anyone live in nurse recruiting and trying to weigh my options whether or not it is worth flying cross country for, or if I would have to come back at a later date for a more formal interview following the open house. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you and congrats on your job.
I attended a hiring event at Duke Regional and I'm from Colorado. It was a very standard hiring process. We went in groups and went over benefits first, then we were called into the interview. Afterward I toured the unit alone since I was the only one in my time slot interviewing for the ED. I was offered the job the following Monday. It was worth the trip. Just remember to be yourself. :)
When you say you were the only one in your time slot does that mean you had a group interview or individual interview? Sorry I am confused. Also, did you ONLY apply for the hiring event ED position? Or can you apply to multiple ones and interview for them all at the hiring event? Thanks for your help, this is all very confusing to me!
I'm not sure. Most of the others interviews for medical units so I don't know what their process was. But I was called from the group into an individual interview. Honestly, no matter how they do it, just prep like you would otherwise, and give it your all.
I only applied to the ED. You can apply to multiple, but I assume that you will only have the opportunity to interview with one department unless multiple departments are on a panel. Just be flexible and go with the flow.
Hey everyone! I got a job at Duke and am supposed to start in a couple weeks!
I was wondering what people who already found a place did or others who are currently in the same boat as me are going about trying to find a place to live? I was wondering if anyone else was looking for a roommate (maybe we could chat!). Or if anyone could recommend areas to live in or apartment complexes to look at? I am leaning towards living in Raleigh but am also open to Durham.
I am really struggling with my apartment hunt so any advice would be welcomed! (:
Hey Savage7! I am also apartment hunting and looking for a roommate. I actually live in Durham with family but would love to move out by my start date, April 2nd. I am originally from New Jersey so I am not very familiar with the area. I cant send messages yet but if you would like to chat here is my email: [email protected]
