Hey everyone! I was just hired as a new grad into the new grad nurse residency program at Duke University Hospital. I live about 8 hours away and I'm hoping to connect with others who will also be starting the program in July! I'm also looking for recommendations on places to live in the Duke/Raleigh area!
Hello everyone! I am excited to have found this post as I also applied to Duke as a New Grad. I will be graduating in May 2018 and recently applied to their Cardiothoracic Surgery Step Down Units. May I ask what the timeline was like for you all? I was just wondering when I might expect to hear something (I just started applying yesterday). If hired, I would be moving to NC from New York. Thanks, and congrats to everyone who got invitations for interviews! -Melissa
I ended up getting the job and am scheduled to start late March! So now I am in search of a place to live and roommates! If anyone else is relocating or wants to share how they went about finding a place to live that would be super helpful. Also, if anyone from the area wants to recommend neighborhoods or areas to live where there are typically young people that would be great! I am so excited to start my nursing career at Duke!

Everything went very fast for me. I applied and 2 days later got an email to schedule a phone interview. Scheduled that for the following week and at the end of the phone interview I was asked to come in for an on site interview within the next 3 weeks. Four days after my interview with the manager I was offered a position and asked to start in late March. I am from Massachusetts so will also be relocating. Best of luck!
That's great news! Congratulations on your job offer! Did they by chance pay for your travel expenses to come to the on site interview? Since I only put in my application on Thursday, I'm not too worried I didn't hear back this past week, but I'm hoping for a call soon! Did you apply to more than one position? I wasn't sure if putting in more than one application would make me seem enthusiastic or like I wasn't sure what I want! Sorry for all the questions, this is just such an exciting/stressful time, especially while also trying to finish up nursing school! -Melissa

I applied this weekend and I put in applications for three positions. I stayed within one area though, I applied for critical care, cardiac step down and heart services. I figure that way I'm considered for more then one position but I don't look like my interests are all over the place.

That's really smart! I loved both the cardiac and oncology floors during nursing school so I would honestly be happy working in either specialty. Keep us updated on your job hunt! Did you apply to any other hospitals aside from Duke?

They did not pay for my travel expenses for the interview. But if you are relocating from out of state and accept a position they will pay you $3,000 of taxable income for relocating - so the expenses were worth it with that in mind! I applied to a few positions and was offered a few interviews but I decided to only accept one interview, but you are definitely allowed to interview on multiple units and if you are contacted by a recruiter they should help you with that. I would definitely apply to a few units that you are most interested in. Feel free to ask more questions, I just experienced all the excitement and stress so I understand! Also, you will be so far ahead of your peers job searching now!

Thank you so much! Most all of my peers are planning to stay here locally in NY. I just personally would like to take part in a renowned Nurse Residency program so that my first year going from student to professional nurse is as smooth as it can be. I'm just hoping I can somehow stand out among other candidates. I have a 4.0 GPA, work as a nursing assistant, and volunteer a few hours a week. But I'm sure everyone applying to these top tier places has the same qualifications. Did you apply to any other hospitals? Thanks again for being so helpful, it is much appreciated!!
I was hired in April with a July start date and was told I would be at Duke-Raleigh. About two-months before I started I traveled from the northeast with my mom and stayed at a hotel for 4-5 days while we shopped around for an apartment in Raleigh. We found several nice apartments but ended up at Marshall Park where I am happy. I'm sure i would have been happy with any of them. I am in the process of buying a house in an upscale neighborhood with an April 2018 close that is about 15 minutes from Big Duke, Duke Regional and Duke -Raleigh. If anyone wants to room with me PM me. Good luck with everything. PS - Working at Duke is a dream come true. Very supportive environment. I could not have scripted a better start.

Hi there! Thanks so much for all the info! It's great to hear that you are really enjoying Duke. I applied this past week so I am hoping to hear from HR soon! Did you move to NC from far away? If I get hired, I'd be coming from New York. I am so excited to start hearing from places I applied to. May I ask what other hospitals you applied to as a new grad? Thanks again for being so helpful! -Melissa
