Background: We have a pt that chose to go to another hospital in a larger town for a kidney infection. Due to high census she was going to have to spend her recovery time in their ED or go back to her home town where my hospital is. (For the record this larger hospital is a sister hospital of mine). This pt's cousin worked at this larger hospital and said it is the best.

So..this pt is transferred back to us for ABX, hydration etc..

Here is the chance to turn this pt's thought process around about our hospital. Just because it's not a million beds, doesn't make it bad.

Fast forward to the idiot nurses that took care of her. They completely blew it and it makes me so mad.:devil: Why can't some nurses or CNA's keep their mouths shut!! Here are snippets of what she told our NM and the head of the hospital.

1) Nurse complains of the incompetent computer system and complains on the fact some of her labs are 'missing'. It's done in front of the pt.

2) Pt states that pain meds make her sick. She requested nausea meds. The attending nurse told the pt she would be 'ok'. You can guess what happened....:barf01:

3) Pt asked what meds she was receiving. The RN said she didn't know what they were for. :uhoh3:

4) CNA complained of every little thing that was off that day with care, IN FRONT OF THE PATIENT.

OMG, where is the duct tape??? This will be talked about in a staff meeting, but I'm furious. I have no idea how my manager is going to handle this. It's not the first time patients have complained about the air heads and the CNA's that have a certain know it all tone with people. I'm ready to go ballistic on a few co workers.

There now, :madface:.......do you feel better? Cause it's so much better to get the anger (well, some of it) off your chest before you have to go to work tomorrow and face the airhead co-workers.

Sorry this happened but since it did, I'm glad that management now knows about it. Perhaps some co-workers will be "encouraged" to change their ways?

I feel for you-it's really blows when you are trying your best because you care about your resident/patient and you care about the organization you work for and you get de-railed by such stupidity.

argh-I work with a brand new nurse that does this (yes-the one I referred to in another thread as feeling put upon if she does not have time to eat her cereal at the nurses station every am) She is bytching in front of residents,visitors and s/o's and is also the type that when a res or s/o asks her a question she goes into these overly technical long winded diatribes-you can see the other person's eyes glaze over.I have had two people come to me later and ask "Now what did she say"? I have talked to her a little bit about it-problem is she thinks everyone else is way stooopid and she's very,very schmart.....way schmarter then the rest of us....

The pt doing the complaining did NOT want to be a pt at your smaller hospital.

She ....drove.....when gas prices are what they are, to a bigger/better hospital to avoid the local/smaller hospital. Is it possible her version of events might not be exactly accurate?

I had a patient that complained about EVERYTHING. I think I spent half the night starting every sentence with "I'm sorry." You couldn't disagree with her, because that started her arguing that yes, she was being mistreated because we didn't have TV station X, we should have phones in the rooms (in ICU!), and on and on it went. So, finally I just agreed with her to make her shut UP. "You should have fluffy blankets, these are so stiff." "Yes, ma'am." "You don't need blinds in here, they are nothing but dust catchers, you should have drapes." "Yes, ma'am."

So after spending a night wanting to toss this person out of the nearest window or scream, "GO HOME" into their face, what do I hear when I get back to work? How I told the patient that we needed drapes, a different cable system, etc.

ARG!

Luckily, she'd driven everybody on dayshift so crazy they could put 2 and 2 together. I got "So when we gonna get that new cable system?" for weeks....

very very early in my career, when i was working in ortho, i had a pt. who bi***ed about absolutely everything! finally, i'd just agree with her as an earlier poster did.

the capper? after my weekend off, i came back cheerful and rested. her newest complaint? her room had an insulated ceiling done with those tiles that had lots of holes as part of the design. she demanded that each individual hole be cleaned out with q-tips and disinfectant! aauurrggghh!

I guess they don't understand that beds filled with patients = a bit of security against needing to decrease/call-off staff, ie their paycheck.

And no, I'm not talking about bumping up customer service, I'm talking about staff instilling basic patient confidence in the infrastructure, services, and quality of staff at the facility.

I was training a smarty pants who told a visitor, "Oh, this job is sooo easy I have time to do nothing, ha ha ha!"

I felt an explosion go off in my brain and I barely contained myself.

I was embarrassed and angry because he made me look ignorant just because I had the misfortune of standing right next to him when he said it.

Apparently, some people have no filter nor common sense.

I know. We were up against her thought process anyway, but these nurses have pulled this crap in the past. I have heard it from other nurses, but nothing was ever sent to the NM until now.

I'm tired of it. Like one poster said, this is job security we are talking about. Nurses get called off because census is low. If you want people to come to your hospital and return, you sure as heck don't bash it in front of the patient.:devil: There is a pattern of stupidity at work and I pray the NM does something with them. Maybe some education.

I want to put a big piece of paper in the breakroom with "Ten stupid things nurses say in front of patients" and have everyone who walks in there put down something. I don't think I will be allowed though.;)

roser13, yes, I do feel better. It made me happy to read that other nurses have to deal with idiots. I really thought I worked with them all.

did you give her some q-tips & peroxide and tell her to have at it?
