Dr. Phil today

Published

ok, just now i was watching dr. phil interveiw a physician who had an affair with a nurse and he said (as close a paraphrase as i can remember from five minutes ago):

"i've worked in the health care delivery system for a long time and i've seen lots of times nurses playing footsie with doctors because they see it as their ticket out of having to work as a nurse".

ok, i'm not going to even get into all the problems with this statement since they are obvious, i am writing the show right now to explain why this is not an acceptable way to desribe a profession.

who's with me?

Me too. My question is more where does Dr. Phil get off telling someone that at their personal decisions are "right" or "wrong"? No shrink I've ever known makes those sorts of judgments (out loud, anyway).

You're right, it has nothing to do with his comment. And the fact that there was this certain nurse who got pregnant from that doctor has also NOTHING to do with all the nurses allover the world who love their job and who don't care about sleeping with doctors to escape their "miserable lives". What I was trying to say is that if his wife doesn't have a degree comparable to his own HE should be careful with his comments, because it might imply that she just got married to him because she wanted somebody with money too. I did not mean to burst anybody's bubbles, I was just upset with the statement about nurses. If I want a doctor's pay, I'll go to medical school instead of sleeping with a doctor. It's a much better investment in my future.

I also did not want to talk about abortion or adoption. I just feel that the decision the couple made was based on the "wrong color" of the baby, the couple had stated that the color was an issue, and Dr. Phil supported them, telling them the decision was right. I call that a racist statement. It's my point of view, not an attack.

What in the HECK does his wife's PHYSICAL APPEARENCE have to do with his COMMENT??
uhhh...I personally DON'T know any nurses like this. Considering how incredibly difficult and competitive nursing school is, how completely consuming clinicals are and how mind-wracking it is preparing for the NCLEX it would be much easier to meet a doctor working as a waitress in a country club.

From the start of going to clinicals, I noticed this going on alot of it, even working in the field in various areas, this has been a constant theme Ive noticed

and personally know of three nurses that has had a child out of wed lock with them, I personally believe that this is a self worth issue because each and everyone of these nurses were not stupid on the contrary they were quite smart, but until this minority of nurses change there ways people will continue to view this mostly female dominated field in this light, so it is up to us to make these few accountable for their actions by pointing out this type of behavior which is inappropriate in any working environment.:angryfire

sounds like :stone Dr Phil is making a sexist, statement to me!

I hate to mention this but about 10% of my nursing class went to nursing school for that very reason and made no bones about it. Only about 1/2 of them made it through the nursing program and about 1 out of 10 'got' their objective-for awhile. Unfortunately, many of the medical students and interns were looking for a ticket to help them pay their way through the remainder of medical school. It was a match made in heaven. :rotfl:

Yeah there were always a few of these goldigger types...they were nurses, secretaries, lab techs, RT's whatever...that latch onto baby docs. Also baby docs looking for a helping hand to finish school. BUT...Dr Phil shouldn't insinuate there are many...there are a FEW. But there are a few goldiggers EVERYWHERE so why did he blame nurses specifically? And why not the docs who participate?

Every nurse knows a doc or two whose wife worked and supported him through medical school...then when he finished he dumped her for a younger model. Why is it the women getting the blame here?

In checking on his web site, I did not get the impression that he was making a generalized statement but was referring to this individual's motives.

So today Dr Phil mentioned the whole incident. He never really said Im sorry but he did say he respects nurses and they are the backbone of the medical field etc. It was funny because he read a letter written by two nurses that said we know you didnt mean that all nurses were like that, we know you respect nurses blah blah and it turns out that his sisters - who are RN's - wrote the letter. :chuckle Anyways I just thought I'd let ya'll know that he mentioned it today.
