Does a patient have the right to refuse to allow students to witness their procedure?

I ask because I am scheduled to be in L&D at 7am for an induction and the hospital is full of students right now and from two schools: a PN program and an ADN program.

I really do not like the idea of wide-eyed students looking at my big fat naked rear end spread out on a table. I know I was a student once but the feeling is a little different when you're the one under the microscope.

Can I refuse to allow the students to watch? I don't want to be difficult, I don't mind being visited while the labor progresses but when it's time for Jr. to crown I really want only the necessary people there.

The facility that we do most of our clinicals at has the "you may have a student" thing in their fine print. This is not a teaching hospital and I didn't initially know that these people were not asked ahead of time. I was kind of unhappy when I found out. I think it should always be the patient's right to make a choice before they get a student assigned.

the instructor should have asked permission from you to let the students come into the room in the first place. i am a clinical adjunct instructor for the local college rn program. i always ask patient for their permission to be taken care of by students or for them to observe any procedure.

I let ALL the nursing students in my last birth and my old nursing instructor! But I can understand why that might not be for everyone. and you can certainly refuse.

Now, how did it go???? Congrats and hope everything went well, and we want to know all about it soon!

Turns our there were no studentson the L&D floor that particular day. Only ones there were the doc, L&D nurse and the nursery nurse.

The doctor broke my water and the pitocin drip was started about 9am. Only thing was my BP dropped to 80/30 after the epidural was startedbut that was cleared up easy enough. Sputnik was born a little before 2pm. As with my others, I'll never forget, the feeling is golden (especially when you're pushing and there's no pain).

Of course, he's the sweetest thing in the world to me. I was treated wonderfully, (though I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the JACHO people being there or not.) I kind of even miss it over there.

Congrats!! I'm so glad you had a good (and fast) labor and delivery and have a great new little one! Enjoy him! I envy you, I took a leave from my nursery job recently, and with my youngest being 3 y/o I am having major baby withdraw. Gotta find me a newborn to sniff! :lol2:

I understood especially as a male student in L&D that it wasn't personal when someone said i could't watch. Actually, there were a couple of husbands that didn't want me in there. I just wish that we as nurses could get similar respect like med students would get but I definitely didn't want to make any patients uncomfortable.

Of course you have a right to refuse. You even have a right that your familia not be there (do this at your own risk). If it makes you more comfortable though request that no more than 1 or 2 students are there. Good luck on the delivery. Hope it's a boy

You absolutely have the right to refuse. No questions asked. No explanation necessary.

And congrats!

I know the induction has passed at this point, but just wanted to say as a student, we are supposed to be checking f the patient is comfortable with us being around. In a L/D situation I would say just refuse from the beginning, that way the student can pick another patient and get a better experience (the whole labor and delivery). Also this way there isn't any discomfort for the patient (other than the obvious! lol)
